16:38 Kevin Durant quote sums up vibes around Nets perfectly
In the low-stress environment of NBA training camp and preseason games, it’s all puppies and rainbows in Brooklyn. Ben Simmons is picking his spots and being aggressive, Kyrie Irving‘s handles are still mind-blowing, Kevin Durant is Kevin Durant, and there’s no tension about whether Royce O’Neal or Joe Harris should start.

Durant was asked about those training camp vibes and gave an answer that sums up this Nets season perfectly (via Brian Lewis of the New York Post).

It’s the question everyone has about the Nets — what happens when adversity hits? Although this roster has the talent to contend, does it have the mental toughness?

That is particularly true of Ben Simmons, who previously seemed to wilt under playoff pressure. Durant also talked about Simmons and building up his confidence, via Nick Friedell of ESPN.

Simmons has been aggressive, but it’s preseason (and the Nets are 0-2). Puppies and rainbows. We’re waiting for things to get real.

19:34 Tulsi Gabbard says she is leaving the Democratic Party
Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced Tuesday that she is leaving the Democratic Party.

Driving the news: "I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers who are driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoking anti-white racism," she said in a video posted on Twitter.

The big picture: Gabbard, who sought the Democratic nomination during the 2020 election, supports policy positions, particularly in the foreign policy realm, often out of line with the Democratic mainstream.

Her positions during the 2020 campaign led her to receive a boost from conservative voices, Axios' Sara Fischer reports.

Tulsi Gabbard leaves Democratic Party, denounces it as 'elitist cabal'

Tulsi Gabbard argues the Democrats have given into 'cowardly wokeness' and 'anti-white racism'

Former Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard announced she left the Democratic Party on Tuesday, denouncing the organization as an "elitist cabal."

Gabbard, who retired from the House of Representatives in 2021, attacked the institution in a nearly 30-minute video posted to her YouTube account. She did not announce plans to join the Republican Party or adopt any other political affiliation, however.

"I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism," Gabbard said in an excerpt posted to Twitter.

"I believe in a government that is of the people, by the people and for the people. Unfortunately, today's Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government that is of, by and for the powerful elite," she continued. "I'm calling on my fellow common sense, independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party."

Gabbard's announcement served as the inaugural episode of "The Tusli Gabbard Show," a podcast she is now running.

Gabbard has grown increasingly estranged from the Democratic establishment since her failed candidacy in the 2020 presidential primary. She has also become a vocal critic of President Biden, denouncing him for "pouring fuel on the flames" of division in the country.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich praised Tulsi for ditching the Democrats in a Tuesday statement on Fox News. He argued that she is one of many Americans who traditionally have voted blue but now find the Democrats unrecognizable.

[Gabbard] has always been sort of an independent maverick," Gingrich said. "And I think when she ran for president, she realized how really isolated she was from the great majority of the Democratic Party, which is now, frankly, a pretty weird party….I think you're seeing this drift. And we've certainly seen among Latinos a huge drift towards the Republican Party as they're driven away by the weirder policies of the Democratic Party."

Tulsi Gabbard says she’s leaving the Democratic Party

Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii said Tuesday she is leaving the Democratic Party because it is controlled by an “elitist cabal” that is courting nuclear war and is too hostile toward people of faith and the police.

Ms. Gabbard, who served in Congress from 2013 to 2021, posted a Twitter video outlining her complaints with her former party.

She said Democrats are “driven by cowardly wokeness” and make everything about race, and they “actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms, are hostile to people of faith & spirituality, demonize the police & protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, believe in open borders, weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and above all, dragging us ever closer to nuclear war.”

Ms. Gabbard, an Army reserve officer who makes television appearances, has sparred with her party before, including complaints about the nominating process in 2016 after she endorsed Sen. Bernard Sanders, Vermont independent, for president.

She met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian civil war, raising eyebrows, and often speaks out against military interventions.

Tulsi Gabbard leaves Democratic Party, denounces ‘control of an elitist cabal of warmongers’

Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced she is leaving the Democratic Party, denouncing lawmakers on the Left for promoting policies that “[racialize] every issue & stoke anti-white racism.”

In a video announcement released on Tuesday, Gabbard called on other members of the party to abandon the Democratic Party, accusing the Left of only protecting the “powerful elite.” It’s not clear what party Gabbard plans to join next or if she intends to remain independent.

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms, are hostile to people of faith & spirituality, demonize the police & protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, believe in open borders, weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and above all, dragging us ever closer to nuclear war,” Gabbard said. “If you can no longer stomach the direction that so-called woke Democratic Party ideologues are taking our country, I invite you to join me.”

Gabbard, a one-time presidential hopeful for the Democratic Party, retired from the House in 2021. Since then, the former Hawaii representative has been publicly critical of the party, particularly toward President Joe Biden.

“I believe in a government that is of, by, and for the people. Unfortunately, today’s Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government of, by, and for the powerful elite,” Gabbard said. “I’m calling on my fellow common sense independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party.”

Tulsi Gabbard Leaves Democratic Party: 'Elitist Cabal of Warmongers'

Former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has left the Democratic Party, branding its leadership "an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness."

Gabbard, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic Party presidential nomination in the 2020 election, made the announcement in a video posted on Twitter, in which she accused the Democrats of stoking "anti-white racism," and "dragging us ever closer to nuclear war."

She also announced the launch of The Tulsi Gabbard Show, with the first 28-minute episode titled Why I'm leaving the Democratic Party uploaded to YouTube.

Explaining her decision to leave Gabbard said: "I can no longer remain in today's Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms, hostile to people of faith & spirituality, demonize the police & protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, believe in open borders, weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and above all, dragging us ever closer to nuclear war."

"I believe in a government that is of, by, and for the people," she said. "Unfortunately, today's Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government of, by, and for the powerful elite. I'm calling on my fellow common sense independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party.

"If you can no longer stomach the direction that so-called woke Democratic Party ideologues are taking our country, I invite you to join me."

Gabbard, a military veteran who served in Iraq with the Hawaii Army National Guard, represented Hawaii's 2nd congressional district in the House of Representatives between 2013 and 2021.

In 2020, after fellow Democrat Kai Kahele announced a challenge for her seat, Gabbard said she would not seek reelection to focus on her presidential bid.

Gabbard accused Democratic rivals of "rigging" the party primary, before dropping out and endorsing Joe Biden in March 2020.

Over the past few months, Gabbard has attracted attention for her controversial views on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which she insists is a "proxy" war between the U.S. and Russia.

In June, she suggested top U.S. officials may be guilty of "treason" for saying deferring on war aims to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"Every time this Admin has been asked what the goal of our war with Russia is, using Ukrainians as our proxy, (i.e. how will we know when victory is achieved?) they've dodged the question by declaring the president of Ukraine will make that decision & the U.S. will follow his leadership," she wrote on Twitter.

"So, the most important foreign policy position our country has faced in the last 60 years is not being made by US Congress or an American president, but by the leader of a foreign country.

"If handing over American sovereignty to the leader of another country isn't treason, what is?"

Gabbard's decision to leave the Democratic party was welcomed by Jon Cooper, a prominent Biden supporter who co-founded the Democratic Coalition Against Trump in 2016.

He tweeted: "Hallelujah! Putin ass-kisser Tulsi Gabbard is finally leaving the Democratic Party. With luck, she'll move to Russia. Good riddance, traitor!!!"

18:08 Packers fall to Giants in London, 27-22
LONDON – The Packers played a strong first half but couldn't score offensively in the second half and let a lead get away in losing a very disappointing game to the Giants, 27-22, on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With the loss, the Packers fell to 3-2. The Giants improved to 4-1.

Green Bay led 17-3 in the second quarter on two Aaron Rodgers TD passes to TE Marcedes Lewis and WR Allen Lazard, and the Packers led 20-10 at the half when K Mason Crosby was good from 48 yards on the final play of the first half.

But the Giants put together methodical scoring drives in the second half to score 17 unanswered points for a 27-20 lead, and the Packers last chance died inside the New York 10-yard line. Facing third-and-2 from the 7, Rodgers had back-to-back passes batted away at the line of scrimmage to turn the ball over on downs with just over a minute left.

The Giants ran as much time as possible before taking a safety out of punt formation, and then after the free kick the Packers couldn't get the Hail Mary off as Rodgers' arm was hit while trying to heave it.

Rodgers finished 25-of-39 for 222 yards with two TDs and a 96.3 rating. WR Randall Cobb had seven catches for 99 yards, with Lazard adding four grabs for 35 yards and a TD. RB Aaron Jones had 13 carries for 63 yards, and RB AJ Dillon had six carries for 34 yards.

For the Giants, QB Daniel Jones was 21-of-27 for 217 yards with no TDs, no INTs and a 100.2 passer rating. He also had RB Saquon Barkley had 13 carries for 70 yards with the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. He added three catches for 36 yards. The Giants' leading receiver was Darius Slayton with six catches for 79 yards.

Here's a recap of all the action:

Packers lead Giants 10-3 after first quarter

The Giants won the opening coin toss and deferred. Rookie receiver Christian Watson returned the opening kickoff for 18 yards.

Facing a third-and-8, quarterback Aaron Rodgers bought time in the pocket before delivering a rocket down the middle to Randall Cobb for a 35-yard completion.

Green Bay marched into New York territory behind three runs by AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones for 14 yards. The Packers eventually settled for a 46-yard field goal by Mason Crosby to take a 3-0 lead with 11 minutes, 5 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Packers' defense forced a three-and-out after Kenny Clark tackled Saquon Barkley on both first and second down, and then helped force the pressure on Daniels Jones his incomplete screen pass intended for Barkley.

Yosh Nijman rotated in at left tackle for the Packers' second offensive series. Green Bay and New York traded three-and-outs, with the Giants losing seven yards on their second possession after a delay of game penalty and 2-yard screen to Barkley for a loss.

The offensive line gave Rodgers all kinds of time on the next offensive series, enabling the reigning MVP to deliver a 22-yard pass to Romeo Doubs to get the drive going.

Tight end Robert Tonyan drew a 33-yard defensive pass interference call against Xavier McKinney to give Green Bay a first-and-goal at the New York 4.

Two plays later, Rodgers flicked a 4-yard TD to Allen Lazard to push the Packers' lead to 10-0 with 3:19 left in the first quarter.

Jones completed a 26-yard pass to Darius Slayton to earn the Giants' first first down. A 12-yard pass to Marcus Johnson set up Graham Gano's 48-yard field goal that put New York on the board.

Packers lead Giants 20-10 at halftime

The second quarter began with an 8-yard pass to Aaron Jones for a first down and a pass to tight end Josiah Deguara that he took for 12 yards to midfield.

Green Bay kept the chains moving through runs by Jones and Dillon and a 5-yard pitch to Watson on a jet motion. The Packers converted on third-and-5 at the New York 19 after an 8-yard draw by Jones out of a shotgun.

Cobb picked up nine yards to the Giants' 2 while following Doubs' block on a receiver screen. After setting up the motions with Watson, Rodgers faked a handoff and found a wide-open Marcedes Lewis in the end zone for the 2-yard touchdown to extend Green Bay's lead to 17-3 with 7:25 left in the half.

Gary Brightwell caught Mason Crosby's kickoff off a one hop and was tackled at the Giants' 14 by Rudy Ford. After generating just 14 yards on his first five carries, Barkley busted a 40-yard run before being taken down midfield by Adrian Amos and Eric Stokes.

Preston Smith sacked Jones for a loss of four, but the Giants kept the series going with a 15-yard pass to Richie Jones on third-and-3. New York converted another third-and-long with 9-yard pass to Slayton on third-and-9.

New York found the end zone for the first time off a reversal to Daniel Bellinger to cut the Packers' lead to 17-10 with 1:15 left in the first half.

The Packers took over at their own 25 with all three timeouts remaining. Jones gained 11 yards on first down. Green Bay used its first timeout after a quick out to Cobb for eight yards. Rodgers converted the first down with a 6-yard pass to Tonyan before using the second timeout.

With 43 seconds remaining, Cobb gained 22 yards on a pass across the middle to the New York 29. Crosby made a 48-yard field goal as time expired to put Green Bay up 20-10 at halftime.

Packers lead Giants 20-13 after three

Rashan Gary started the second half with a sack but it was wiped up due to a defensive holding call on Darnell Savage. Slaton converted another third down for the Giants with a 13-yard catch to midfield on third-and-3.

Jones picked up the next third down with his feet, gaining six yards on third-and-4. Preston Smith tackled Barkley for a 1-yard loss on first down at the Green Bay 24 and Gary tackled Jones on a third-and-8 draw to force the 37-yard Gano field goal.

Rodgers fired a 17-yard pass to Lazard on a playaction slant to start the next series. A defensive illegal contact call and an 11-yard run by Dillon moved the Packers to midfield.

22:25 Packers inactives: Who's in, who's out for Week 5 vs. Giants in London
The Green Bay Packers won’t have rookie defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt for Sunday morning’s showdown with the New York Giants in London. The first-round pick is inactive after dealing with a quadriceps injury this week.

The big news: Safety Adrian Amos passed through concussion protocol and will play.

The team’s other four inactive players are rookies. The Packers listed only three players with injury designations on Friday.

Here’s a quick look at the inactive list for the Packers in Week 5:

Inactive list
DL Devonte Wyatt
OT Rasheed Walker
OL Sean Rhyan
WR Samori Toure
DL Jonathan Ford

Wyatt practiced in a limited capacity on Friday but was listed as questionable. The Packers are deep along the defensive line, giving the team the ability to rest him this week. Walker, Rhyan, Toure and Ford have been healthy scratches all year.

Green Bay’s defense has only four defensive linemen active: Kenny Clark, Jarran Reed, Dean Lowry and TJ Slaton.

Who’s in
Amos will play despite suffering a concussion in the first quarter against the Patriots last week, meaning Green Bay has the entire starting secondary available in London. The Packers also have rookie safety Tariq Carpenter available. He was questionable with an abdomen injury.

Giants inactive list
CB Cordale Flott
WR Kenny Golladay
DL Leonard Williams
LB Azeez Olujari
QB Tyrod Taylor
WR Wan’Dale Robinson
WR Kadarius Toney

All seven players were ruled out with injuries on the final injury report of the week. Leonard Williams also won’t play, per NFL Network. Daniel Jones is active and will start at quarterback for the Giants.

Packers vs. Giants prediction, odds, line, spread: 2022 NFL in London picks, bets from model on 140-105 roll

SportsLine's model simulated New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 10,000 times
One-loss teams will face off in a highly anticipated matchup on Sunday. The Green Bay Packers and New York Giants take the field in the 32nd all-time NFL in London game. Green Bay will make its first trip to England, with New York playing in London for the third time. The clubs will also meet in NFL London 2022 for the first time since 2019, with the winner entering the middle third of the season with a 4-1 record.

Kick-off is at 9:30 a.m. ET in London. Caesars Sportsbook lists Green Bay as an 8-point favorite, while the over/under, or total number of points Vegas thinks will be scored, is 42 in the latest Giants vs. Packers odds. Before you make any Giants vs. Packers picks, you need to see the NFL predictions and betting advice from SportsLine's advanced computer model.

The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up almost $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 5 of the 2022 NFL season on an incredible 140-105 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season. The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past six years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94% of CBS Sports Football Pick'em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, the model has set its sights on Giants vs. Packers and just locked in its picks and NFL Week 5 predictions. You can head to SportsLine now to see the model's picks. Now, here are several NFL odds and betting lines for Giants vs. Packers:

Why the Giants can cover
The Giants are facing a Packers team that is averaging only 18.8 points per game, fewest for the franchise through four weeks since 2006. New York is in the top 10 in points allowed per game (17.8) and per drive (1.61), with additional top-10 marks in first downs allowed, passing yards allowed, and passing touchdowns allowed. The Giants are elite on third down, allowing opponents to convert only 29.4% of chances, and are No. 2 in red zone efficiency allowed at 35.7%.

On offense, New York leads the NFL in rushing yards with 770 through four weeks and is No. 2 at 5.8 yards per carry. That attack is headlined by Saquon Barkley, who leads the league in rushing yards, and New York posted 262 rushing yards in Week 4.

Why the Packers can cover
The Packers are No. 6 in total offense, averaging 377.5 yards per game, and in the top 10 in rushing yards (145.0 per game) and yards per carry (5.0). Aaron Rodgers leads a potent third-down offense that converts 42.6% of chances, and the four-time MVP quarterback has a 69% completion rate with a top-10 mark in passing touchdowns.

Running back Aaron Jones leads the NFL with 6.8 yards per carry and has 327 rushing yards in four games. On the other side, the Packers are in the top seven in scoring defense, total defense, first downs allowed, passing defense, and third down defense. New York is a bottom-tier team in passing offense, including the second-worst mark in yards, and the Giants land well below the NFL average in third down efficiency and red zone efficiency.

How to make Giants vs. Packers picks
SportsLine's model is leaning Over on the total, with the leading rusher for both teams projected to average at least five yards per carry. The model also says one side of the spread has all the value. You can only see the model's Giants vs. Packers picks at SportsLine.

So who wins Giants vs. Packers in London? And which side of the spread has all the value? Visit SportsLine now to see which side of the Giants vs. Packers spread you need to jump on Sunday, all from the model that has crushed its NFL picks, and find out.

New York Giants at Green Bay Packers (London)
Time: Sunday, 9:30 a.m. ET (NFL Network), stream on fuboTV (try for free)
Open: Packers -8

"The Packers offense struggled to get it going against the Patriots and barely beat the Patriots, who featured a third-string quarterback most of the day. That can't happen two weeks in a row, right? The Giants don't seem to be as tough a matchup for Aaron Rodgers and Co., and you have to think the Packers will focus all their attention on stopping Saquon Barkley in this game. If Davis Webb is the QB, the straight line for this game should be double-digits, so act now to lock in this teaser leg."

SportsLine NFL expert R.J. White likes dropping the Packers down to -2 this week in a teaser. To see his other teaser legs for this weekend, head on over to SportsLine.

10:41 Numbers inside Texas Longhorns' huge win over the Oklahoma Sooners
The Oklahoma Sooners might be down bad. They were destroyed by the Texas Longhorns in the 2022 edition of the Red River Showdown.

The 49-point loss comes a week after the Sooners lost by 30 to the TCU Horned Frogs. Oklahoma is now 3-3 after starting 3-0 and has given up 40-plus points in each of its losses.

In the history of this rivalry, it's usually the Sooners who have scored big in Dallas. They've scored 60 or more against Texas three times since 2000. But Saturday, it was all Longhorns. Texas QB Quinn Ewers, who had not played since being injured against Alabama in Week 2, returned with a big performance. He threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns.

Athletes from OU's rivals were quick to pile on, too.

Here's a look at the big numbers from this OU-Texas game:

49: The 49 points are the most the Longhorns have scored in the series. It's also Texas' largest margin of victory over Oklahoma. The previous high was 33 points done in 1941 and 2005.

30: After losing 55-24 last week and 49-0 this week, Oklahoma has now lost consecutive games by 30 points or more for the first time in program history. This was the 24th time Oklahoma lost by 30 or more.

311: The last time Oklahoma was shut out came Nov. 7, 1998. Saturday's loss ends a streak of 311 consecutive games for Oklahoma without being held scoreless. Texas last shut out Oklahoma in 1965.

167: Oklahoma had scored an offensive touchdown in 167 straight games. That was the longest active streak in FBS. It's a far cry from the offensive powerhouse OU has been in previous years. The Sooners produced two Heisman Trophy-winning QBs in the past six years.

1945: The loss Saturday is now the worst shutout loss in OU history. It supplants a 47-0 loss to Oklahoma State in 1945.

Texas' offense rolled up 595 total yards on a woeful OU defense while Texas' defense held the Sooners to just 195 yards.

267: Bijan Robinson, the Longhorns' star running back, has run all over Oklahoma in the past two seasons, amassing 267 yards and three touchdowns. He had 130 Saturday and had plenty of room to run. Of those 130 yards, 86 came before contact.

9: Ewers faced little heat from the Sooners. He was pressured on just nine of his 33 dropbacks. He completed 7 of 8 passes against pressure for 67 yards and a TD. With tons of time to throw, Ewers was able to throw downfield. Ewers went 9-of-14 on passes thrown 10 or more yards downfield for 168 yards and three scores. That's tied for the sixth-most such completions in a game by a Texas QB in the past 10 seasons.

2014: Texas' defense was outstanding. It was the first time OU was held under 250 total yards since 2014. The Sooners completed just nine passes for 39 yards. They had 32 at halftime, their fewest since 2014. That was also the season before Lincoln Riley was hired to run OU's offense. The Longhorns got three sacks and intercepted two passes Saturday.

3-3: This is Oklahoma's worst record through six games since 2009. The three straight losses is the longest losing streak for the Sooners since 1998. The Sooners would eventually lose five straight in that season, which was also the last time OU finished under .500.

5 takeaways from the Oklahoma Sooners' blowout loss to the Texas Longhorns

After the Oklahoma Sooners dropped their first two games of conference play, things weren’t looking good, especially when they lost Dillon Gabriel a week ago in the loss to TCU. Their loss to Texas continues a run of play that is absolutely shocking.

Oklahoma has gone 0-3 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1998. It isn’t simply that they’ve lost. It’s how they’ve lost these three games. The Sooners have allowed 45.33 points per game in the three losses, and they’ve gotten progressively worse.

The quicksand that the Sooners are in turned into a pit of despair this week as the Sooners were dominated by the Texas Longhorns, 49-0, in the Cotton Bowl.

Aside from the opening drive three-and-out forced by the defense, the Oklahoma Sooners couldn’t do anything on either side of the football against the Texas Longhorns.

Oklahoma’s defense got beat by a methodical offensive approach by Steve Sarkisian and Quinn Ewers. And the offense, without starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel, resorted to trick plays and the wildcat to find some semblance of offense with next to no success.

Disappointment doesn’t quite cover what happened on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. This team was absolutely dominated and embarrassed.

Without Dillon Gabriel, the Sooners basically had no offense. They tried running the wildcat, and it worked for a while. They tried some trick plays, which didn’t work at all, and the offense couldn’t really do anything.

Oklahoma couldn’t push the ball down the field, and when they did look to throw beyond the line of scrimmage, either people didn’t get open or the quarterback held on to the ball too long. Davis Beville was just 6 of 12 for 38 yards and it was evident they didn’t trust him to throw the ball much.

Jeff Lebby tried to get the offense going, but at times he got away from things that were working in the run game.

Too often, the Oklahoma Sooners offense looked like a team playing afraid to lose.

For the third straight game, this Oklahoma Sooners’ defense has been bad. They’re not getting any pressure on the quarterback, and the coverage hasn’t been good down the field, either.

Quinn Ewers looked way too comfortable in the pocket for a quarterback playing in the Red River Showdown for the first time.

Oklahoma’s defense allowed 49 points, 585 total yards, 7.2 yards per play, and Texas went 10 of 15 on third down in this game.

The Sooners’ defense didn’t record a sack and had just four tackles for loss in the game.

When we thought it couldn’t get any worse, it got much, much worse. After losses to Kansas State and TCU took the wind out of the sails of a 3-0 start, this loss to Texas was easily the worst.

What happened on Saturday was shocking. And it wasn’t just because they didn’t have their starting quarterback.

After allowing 42, 55 and 49 points in the last three games, the Sooners have a lot of questions to answer moving forward.

With Brent Venables’ success at Clemson, there were much higher expectations for this defense, even if it didn’t become a great unit right away. Even the person that thought they may take a step back didn’t expect this.

If there was ever a week for the Sooners to show that they were more than the doormat of the Big 12 in 2022, this was the week. And yet, they got steamrolled by their biggest rival.

Even late in the game, when Texas was simply running the football and killing clock, the Sooners couldn’t stop the Longhorns. It didn’t matter the down and distance. Texas just ran right over and right through Oklahoma’s defense, even with several starters on the field.

Brent Venables may have a great culture and strength and conditioning program. He may be a great defensive mind. But none of that is translating to the football field.

They’ve got a long way to go to bring this program back to being a conference title contender.

Texas vs. Oklahoma final score: Longhorns beat the Sooners 49-0, the largest margin in school history

In a rare development in the Red River Showdown, the Texas Longhorns are favored against the Oklahoma Sooners for the first time since 2009 as the Longhorns try to end a four-game losing streak in the rivalry. Meanwhile, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is looking for only his second win away from Austin since arriving on the Forty Acres against an Oklahoma team reeling after two straight losses.

Pre-game
As reported earlier in the week by ESPN and other outlets, redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers will start on Saturday after missing the last three-plus games with the clavicle injury he sustained against Alabama, Sarkisian told Longhorn Network.

The status of Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel is less clear after the UCF transfer was in concussion protocol this week after leaving the loss to TCU — Gabriel dressed for the game and is going through pre-game warmups.

A handful of other players banged up last week are also dressed and appear set to play, including running back Eric Gray.

On defense, safety Bill Bowman will not play for the Sooners.

First quarter
With Oklahoma winning the toss and deferring to the second half, the beleaguered Sooners defense was able to get a three and out against the Longhorns to start the game when Ewers missed tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders on a crossing route and settled for a check down to running back Roschon Johnson, who was tackled behind the line of scrimmage.

Oklahoma was able to pick up a first down, by tight end Brayden Willis on a 3rd and 4 slant, but the Texas defense held after that as quarterback Davis Beville threw two incompletions sandwiched around a push pass to wide receiver Drake Stoops that the Horns stopped for no gain.

Following a first-down catch by wide receiver Jordan Whittington, Sanders took a short pass down the sideline for the game’s first explosive play. Initially ruled as a 29-yard gain, review overturned the play, bringing it back 13 yards. As Texas went tempo, running back Bijan Robinson ran for a first down, Ewers found Whittington for 22 yards, and Johnson moved the chains again by trucking an Oklahoma defender to move into the red zone. After a screen pass to Worthy picked up a first down near the goal line, Robinson scored on a two-yard run to cap the 12-play, 90-yard drive.

With Gabriel out, Oklahoma debuted a Wildcat formation with tight end Brayden Willis as the triggerman, gaining 35 yards on the first two plays. As the Longhorns defense adjusted, the Sooners had to convert a 4th and 2 to pick up the next first down before Beville returned to the game. A tackle for loss by Texas nose tackle Keondre Coburn forced a 3rd and 9 for Oklahoma. When Stoops caught a pass for a six-yard gain, the Sooners lined up to go for it on fourth down, but had to call a timeout as the play clock ticked down. Coming out of the timeout, Oklahoma called a fake field goal and picked up the first down on a throw from the holder to the kicker that narrowly made the yard to gain. On 4th and 1 from the Texas eight-yard line, the Horns were able to stop Gray as T’Vondre Sweat got penetration to hit Gray in the backfield and turn Oklahoma over on downs.

Second quarter
Facing a critical 3rd and 1 to start the second quarter, Johnson turned in another physical run for a seven-yard gain and Ewers hit Whittington for 13 yards. Then a misdirection run fake screen to Johnson hit up the right sideline for 38 yards. After a throw to running back Keilan Robinson for 13 yards, Ewers threw a 10-yard touchdown to wide receiver Xavier Worthy on a run-pass option glance route.

Another Wildcat formation used Gray behind center to get into Texas territory before Marcus Majors took over and the Longhorns inflicted a negative play on a push pass. On 3rd and 10, Beville threw an incomplete pass to force a punt in an area where the Sooners wanted to gain enough yards for a potential fourth-down conversion.

08:41 Phillies stun Cardinals with wild 9th-inning rally to open wild card
ST. LOUIS -- Jean Segura's career spanned 11 seasons and 1,328 games before he finally reached the postseason, the longest active streak in the major leagues. On the morning of his first playoff game, the Philadelphia Phillies' second baseman barely slept. He awoke at 7 a.m. "with adrenaline in my body." Friday wore on, and that edge never left.

"I was mentally focused on every play, every pitch," Segura said. "I came prepared today to play a game, and to be able to be here -- I just thank God that everything was on my side."

"I was mentally focused on every play, every pitch," Segura said. "I came prepared today to play a game, and to be able to be here -- I just thank God that everything was on my side."

The Cardinals, backed by a stellar performance from Jose Quintana and an electrifying pinch-hit homer by Juan Yepez, held a 2-0 lead heading into the final inning and had every reason to believe they were headed toward a Game 1 victory. They were at home, with a sold-out Busch Stadium crowd in a frenzy, and their lights-out closer, Ryan Helsley, was on the mound.

What followed strained credulity.

The Cardinals were 93-0 in postseason history when leading by multiple runs entering the ninth inning. The Phillies, meanwhile, were 0-54 during the regular season in that same situation. They wound up scoring six times -- the most by a team trailing entering the ninth in postseason history. None of their runs came on hard contact. Alec Bohm was plunked with the bases loaded, Brandon Marsh hit a chopper that bounced past the glove of Nolan Arenado, Kyle Schwarber produced a sacrifice fly and Bryson Stott brought in a run after Paul Goldschmidt made a diving play on his grounder but threw late to home.

The biggest runs came off the bat of Segura, who lunged toward a slider low and away from Andre Pallante and hit a four-hopper to the right side that snuck through a sprawling Tommy Edman, who was playing slightly in to account for Segura's speed. The Cardinals had a ground ball pitcher against a ground ball hitter and got a grounder that could have produced a game-ending double play -- but it was hit just a tad too far to the right.

"That's just kind of how the inning went," Arenado said. "It wasn't going our way."

And it all seemed to stem from Helsley's right middle finger, the one he jammed while gathering himself on a fielding play in the penultimate game of the regular season. Helsley threw some pitches off the mound during Thursday's workout, and though he admitted to his finger feeling slightly stiff, he informed the Cardinals that he would be ready to close out games in the postseason.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol turned to Helsley with one on and one out in the eighth and watched him make quick work of Marsh and Schwarber. Shortly after the ninth inning began, though, Marmol said Helsley "started to lose a little bit of feel for his pitches."

Helsley, who emerged this season as one of the sport's most dominant closers, began to miss well wide of the strike zone and ultimately threw only nine of his 23 pitches for strikes in the ninth. J.T. Realmuto contributed a one-out single, then Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos drew back-to-back walks, the latter on pitches that were either way up and in or way low and outside. By that point, the Cardinals had Pallante and Jack Flaherty warming in the bullpen. Bohm would be Helsley's last batter -- and Helsley hit him on the left shoulder with a 101 mph fastball.

After throwing a warm-up pitch well outside, Helsley exited, then departed Busch Stadium to get imaging done on his troublesome finger.

He might be lost for the series.

"We've had guys step up all year," Marmol said. "If he goes down, someone else has to step up and do that job, so it's part of it. No one's going to feel sorry for us, I'll tell you that. "

Friday's top of the ninth marked the only half-inning in baseball this season where a team allowed at least six earned runs on three hits or fewer, with no extra-base hits allowed, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. There have now been five games in postseason history in which a team that led by two or more runs after the eighth inning lost by two or more runs -- and the Cardinals have been involved in three of those. It marked the first time the Phillies had scored six or more runs in any postseason inning.

They picked the perfect time.

"It was special," said Zack Wheeler, who threw 6⅓ scoreless innings against the Cardinals, exiting three batters before Jose Alvarado gave up the two-run homer to Yepez.

"That was probably the most exciting inning I've ever been a part of," Realmuto said of the top of the ninth. "And it didn't even take a big home run. The momentum was there for us and multiple guys stepped up when they needed to."

Jose Ramirez's 2-run homer sends Guardians past Rays in AL opener

CLEVELAND -- When the Cleveland Guardians needed a response, after Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead in Game 1 of their AL Wild Card Series on Friday, it came as no surprise that All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez would be the guy to come through. He's done it all year.

"He's inevitable," winning pitcher Shane Bieber said after the Guardians' 2-1 win. "To do it right away, that was huge. I know for me personally, any pitcher, will tell you that."

"He's inevitable," winning pitcher Shane Bieber said after the Guardians' 2-1 win. "To do it right away, that was huge. I know for me personally, any pitcher, will tell you that."

"Yeah, that [responding] came through my mind, but we have a really good team, so I knew we were capable to come back," Ramirez said through the team interpreter. "When it came off the bat I felt it was a homer, but with this weather you never know, and when I saw the center fielder trying to get to the wall, I was kind of concerned and I kind of sped up a little bit my pace [on the bases]."

"I know he was [sitting] on 29 [in the regular season], and everybody was wanting it -- and I understand why they want him to get 30," Terry Francona said. "But he hit the double the other way. He had a bunch of hits that were staying through the ball. Balls will go out just because he's a really good hitter."

McClanahan left the pitch up after getting Ramirez out on changeups his first two times at the plate.

"That was my plan, just look for that changeup," he said. "He got me twice with the same pitch. Because it's a really good pitch. It really resembles a fastball. So I was just sitting on that pitch and I was just trying not to do too much, just put it on the opposing side of the field, and I was able to get a good contact on that."

The home run backed Bieber's stellar outing as he lasted 7⅔ innings, giving up just three hits while striking out eight. He wouldn't commit to it being his best outing of the year but it would be hard to find one better, considering what's at stake. The Guardians can win the best-of-three series with a victory Saturday.

Bieber said the crowd gave him some needed adrenaline.

"It was just a lot of fun out there," he said. "I wasn't blind to the fact that there were a lot of people there pulling for us, pulling for us to come out of there with a victory. So we won't take that for granted and that's what we do it for."

The game lasted just two hours, 17 minutes on a chilly and cloudy day in Cleveland. It was decided by home runs -- by two teams not known for hitting them.

"Two home runs, theirs and ours," Francona said. "Or we might still be playing because both pitchers were [good], I mean, their guy was really good."

Mets include Starling Marte, Francisco Alvarez on postseason roster

NEW YORK -- When the Mets kick off their playoff run against the San Diego Padres on Friday night, Starling Marte and Francisco Alvarez will be on the roster.

Marte has not played for the past month and has been working his way back from a fractured middle finger. Mets manager Buck Showalter expressed hesitation in recent days about Marte's injury progress, saying the outfielder struggled to grip a bat and baseball. Despite that, the team seems to believe he can contribute to the team in the NL Wild Card Series.

While Marte normally bats second in the Mets lineup, Showalter placed him as the sixth hitter in the wild-card series opener.

"There's some unknown," Showalter said. "Who's 100 percent this time of year? We'll see. I think it's evidence by where he's hitting in the order a little bit. I'm hoping that things go well and we move him back up tomorrow."

Marte would not answer if he felt 100%, but added he would make adjustments if the inflammation in his right middle finger flares up. The Mets medical staff tried a variety of tape and splint combinations on Marte's finger before landing on wrap-around padding.

"In a situation like this, you kind of have to suck up the pain because it's a significant situation," Marte said. "You kind of have to fight through it."

Alvarez makes the postseason roster after the Mets called him up in the final weeks of the season. The 20-year-old slugger, ranked as the top prospect in the Mets' farm system, hit his first major league home run on Tuesday.

Darin Ruf joins the team on the postseason roster after struggling since coming over to the Mets at the trade deadline.

Left off the roster are Tyler Naquin, Mark Vientos and pitchers Carlos Carrasco, Taijuan Walker and Trevor Williams, indicating the Mets are placing more emphasis on relievers over innings eaters in the wild-card round.

The Mets will carry 12 pitchers and 14 position players.

14:13 Dolly Parton, Sissy Spacek and more pay tribute to Loretta Lynn

The love for Loretta Lynn flowed freely Tuesday after news of her death at the age of 90 was announced.

Lynn was mourned on social media by friends and fans who admired the pioneering woman of country music, whose story was told in the 1980 film “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

Actress Sissy Spacek, who won an Oscar for portraying Lynn in the film, said she is “heartbroken” over the death of the country music star.

“Today is a sad day. The world lost a magnificent human being. Loretta Lynn was a great artist, a strong and resilient country music pioneer and a precious friend. I am heartbroken. I send my deepest sympathies to her wonderful family, her friends, and her loyal fans,” Spacek said in a statement to CNN.

Dolly Parton, who was close to Lynn, posted a statement on social media, which began, “So sorry to hear about my sister, friend Loretta.”

“We’ve been like sisters all the years we’ve been in Nashville and she was a wonderful human being, wonderful talent, had millions of fans and I’m one of them,” Parton wrote. “I miss her dearly as we all will. May she rest in peace.”

Singer Martina McBride posted on her verified Instagram account a throwback photo of her and Lynn.

“It’s so hard to feel like you have the right words. I can hear Loretta saying ‘just take your time honey,’” McBride wrote in the caption. “We all loved her so much. There will never be another like her. I am so grateful that I got to know her, to spend time with her, laugh with her…..I was always a little astonished when she called me her friend.”

Legendary songwriter Carole King tweeted a photo of Lynn smiling at a piano, writing, “She was an inspiration. R.I.P. Loretta Lynn.”

Country singer Kacey Musgraves kept it brief, tweeting simply “Loretta” with a broken heart emoji.

Country music icon Loretta Lynn dies at 90

Loretta Lynn, the country music star who brought unparalleled candor about the domestic realities of working-class women to country songwriting, died at her home in Tennessee on Tuesday. She was 90.

JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:

Country music icon Loretta Lynn died today. She 90 years old, and her family says she died peacefully in her sleep.

MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST:

Loretta Lynn brought unparalleled candor about the domestic realities of women class-working to country songwriting. And she taught those who came after her to speak their minds, too.

SUMMERS: When a movie was made about her life, Lynn became a prominent pop culture figure, but she never compromised her down-home sensibilities. WNXP's Jewly Hight has this appreciation.

JEWLY HIGHT, BYLINE: One of the biggest songs of Loretta Lynn's career proudly recounted her hardscrabble background.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER")

LORETTA LYNN: (Singing) Well, I was born a coal miner's daughter in a cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler. We were poor, but we had love. That's the one thing that Daddy made sure of. He shoveled coal to make a poor man's dollar.

HIGHT: Lynn never tired of telling stories of her upbringing in a remote coal mining community in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. In a 2000 NPR interview, she recalled how her parents, Melvin and Clara Webb, did whatever it took to feed their eight children, even if it meant accepting a relative's gift of a stolen chicken.

LYNN: There was many times we went to bed hungry and wake up in the middle of the night, 3 o'clock in the morning. We'd smell chicken cooking. Mom would get us up and let us eat and go back to bed.

HIGHT: Loretta Webb was barely a teenager when she started a family of her own with a 21-year-old former soldier, Oliver Lynn, better known as Mooney or Doolittle. They wasted no time having the first four of their six children and migrated to Washington state. It was there that her husband heard her bedtime lullabies and pushed her to start performing publicly. In a 2010 interview with WHYY's Fresh Air, Loretta Lynn insisted she wouldn't have done it otherwise.

LYNN: I wouldn't get out in front of people. I wouldn't - you know, I was really bashful, and I wouldn't - I would never sing in front of anybody.

HIGHT: Once her husband started scrounging up paying gigs for her, Loretta taught herself to write songs, says country music historian and journalist Robert Oermann.

ROBERT OERMANN: She got a copy of Country Song Roundup, and this is a magazine that has country lyrics printed in it along with stories about the stars. And she would read the country lyrics in the magazine, and she'd go, well, that's nothing. I can do that, 'cause she could and had been.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "I'M A HONKY TONK GIRL")

LYNN: (Singing) So turn that jukebox way up high, and fill my glass up while I cry. I've lost everything in this world, and now I'm a honky tonk girl.

HIGHT: Lynn and her husband drove around to radio stations. She would introduce herself to the DJs and try to charm them into spinning her record. The couple's efforts begun to get her notice when they landed in Nashville in 1960. Artists like Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline, who became Lynn's mentor, were having a lot of success with the lush, pop-sweetened production style known as the Nashville sound. Lynn worked with Cline's producer Owen Bradley but hung onto her unsoftened twang.

18:19 2022 NFL season, Week 4: What We Learned from 49ers' win over Rams
DeMeco Ryans is due for a promotion. It appears the defensive coordinator isn't long for San Francisco because of how effective his unit has been in the first month of the season, and Monday night stands as his best showing yet. Ryans capitalized on a weakened Rams offensive line by dialing up plenty of pressure with a variety of attacks, overwhelming the undermanned Rams to the tune of seven sacks. Ryans' defense reduced the Los Angeles offense to rubble, limiting the Rams to 257 total yards and keeping them out of the end zone entirely. When things got close late, rising star Talanoa Hufanga delivered the knockout punch with a fantastic pick-six. We've seen enough to know the 49ers won't always get the best performances from Jimmy Garoppolo, but if the defense remains this effective, they'll have a shot in every game -- and Ryans will find himself on the head-coaching interview circuit in 2023.

The Rams' offense is in shambles. Widely seen as an offensive genius, Sean McVay hasn't found an answer for Los Angeles' struggles with the football. The offensive line has been decimated by injuries to the point Matthew Stafford chose to throw to Cooper Kupp -- his only trusted target -- in double coverage on a crucial third-and-10 instead of waiting one more beat to look to Allen Robinson, resulting in an incompletion. Robinson, meanwhile, continues to struggle to find a place in this offense, and Los Angeles hasn't shown much of an offensive rhythm. Kupp is all Stafford has to work with in this offense right now. And the running game remains absent, gaining just 57 yards as a team. That's deserving of a place on the side of a milk carton, and is the only explanation for McVay calling three straight passes in a goal-to-go situation from San Francisco's 8-yard line.

Deebo Samuel is back to his old self. He never truly left, but after the 49ers failed to do anything of note just a week ago, they took their second straight prime-time game and ran with it. Samuel did so literally, catching a short pass from Garoppolo (which was nearly intercepted), then becoming a tackle-breaking, nightmare-inducing machine, barreling down the field like a runaway 18-wheeler with a convoy of blockers coming along for the ride. The yards-after-catch total on that play was 52, boosting Garoppolo's final line on a night in which Kyle Shanahan wisely relied on a short passing game and let the targets do the dirty work. Samuel had plenty to show for it, finishing with six catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. As Garoppolo said afterward, the YAC Bros. are back.

This is a Talanoa Hufanga appreciation point. We mentioned him in the first point tonight, but Hufanga has earned his own note. No player on the 49ers' defense has been better through the first month of the season, which made Monday night a little strange because Hufanga hadn't made a significant play in the first three quarters. As it turns out, he was saving his best for last. Clinging to an eight-point lead in the final quarter, Hufanga perfectly read a receiver screen, jumping Stafford's pass intended for Kupp, juggling it and securing the ball just as he took off for the end zone. Hufanga's pick-six put the Rams to bed and the rest of the football world on notice. You no longer have to watch the 49ers every week to know Hufanga is a difference-maker -- and one of my favorite players to watch in the entire league in 2022.

The Rams can't survive the Bay Area once again. Monday night marked Los Angeles' seventh-straight regular-season loss to the division-rival 49ers. They're remarkably bad when heading to the greater San Francisco area, falling to 3-11-1 in road games against the 49ers since 2008. That's well before the start of the Sean McVay era, but no matter the coach, quarterback or home city (they were headquartered in St. Louis until 2016), the Rams just can't get the job done in San Francisco. Monday night was only one game, but it stands as a point of concern for the Rams, who at 2-2 are tied with the 49ers and the rest of the NFC West, but have a lot of questions to answer going forward. It's difficult to defend a Super Bowl title -- one earned in part by taking down the 49ers at home in the NFC Championship Game -- and performances like this one don't inspire much confidence.

NFL Research: Matthew Stafford threw his 28th career pick-six Monday night, tying him with Hall of Famer Joe Namath for the third-most thrown by any player since 1950. Stafford also failed to throw a touchdown pass for a second straight game, the first time he's done so in consecutive contests since Weeks 15-16 of the 2016 season.

19:24 Georgia football: The latest injury updates as the Bulldogs prepare
COLUMBIA, Mo. — After a closer-than-expected win over a MAC opponent, the Georgia Bulldogs return to SEC play today and will hit the road to do so.

No. 1 Georgia (4-0, 1-0 SEC) is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET showdown with Missouri (2-2, 0-1 SEC) in Faurot Field in Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs are coming off a 39-22 victory over Kent State; Missouri, meanwhile, is fresh off a tough 17-14 overtime loss on the road against Auburn.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart had plenty of positive things to say about Missouri in the lead-up to the Saturday matchup.

“A team I have a lot of respect for,” Smart said Monday when discussing Missouri. “Any time you go on the road in the SEC, we talk about it all the time, it's tough to win on the road in the SEC and I have a lot of respect for Eliah [Drinkwitz], the job he's done, what he does offensively and defensively. They do a good job. I've always thought a lot about the job he does offensively and the issues they create defensively, as well. This year, they have big personnel upfront. They play physical.

“They just played a really tough game against Auburn. A tough way to lose a game. But we're looking forward to getting ready for these guys and going on the road in the SEC.”

Georgia is looking for success against Missouri much like it has found since the Tigers joined the SEC. The Bulldogs have won nine of the last 10 meetings against the Tigers, including a 43-6 victory in Sanford Stadium last November.

The Bulldogs enter Saturday’s action with multiple players dealing with a wide array of injuries. Here’s the latest on each of those players as the Bulldogs prepare to take on the Tigers.

Note: Please be sure to revisit this story pre-game, as we will update as various Bulldogs warm-up for the game.

Freshman running back Andrew Paul impressed during his first fall camp as a Bulldog, but he wound up tearing his ACL during the team’s second scrimmage of the fall. Paul was scheduled to have surgery earlier this week as he turns his attention to his rehab.

Georgia run-game coordinator Dell McGee spoke about Paul in August and convincing him to come to Georgia.

“He’s a great kid from a great family. Very quiet, hard worker, so he fits all the character of things we’re looking for in our football players. We also needed another running back. We always like to keep five in our roster. Our lineup number is six, but we’ve been kind of shorting that number because of the talent that we’ve had in the room,” McGee said. “He has family from Georgia, so there was a connection there. The running back tradition here speaks for itself. That tradition was developed way before I got here.

“Just getting in there late in the month of December and January allowed me an opportunity of getting to know him and his family and him getting to know me — and just what he wanted in goals and aspirations — it just fit coming to Georgia.”

The Bulldogs had a real scare last Saturday when it appeared running back Kenny McIntosh had taken a shot to his knee in the fourth quarter of Georgia’s victory over Kent State. Luckily, the injury was not as serious as it looked as McIntosh was helped on the sideline.

McIntosh was among his teammates during pregame warm-ups and appears all set to play tonight. How much he plays will be the question.

McIntosh spoke to media members on Monday and described the injury as a quad contusion. McIntosh's availability is crucial for Georgia given he stands third among the team's non-quarterbacks in total yardage this season (97 yards).

"I'm going to be fine. You know, a lot of ice baths ahead of me, that's all. I'll be straight," McIntosh said. "It's been nagging me a little bit, but [the defender] just kind of took a shot on it. That's all it was. Just a little bruise. I'll be straight."

McIntosh has been a weapon as a ball carrier and as a receiver through four games this season. In total, he's taken 25 carries for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns and also caught 21 passes for 227 yards. McIntosh was the team's leading receiver through two weeks this fall.

Smart explained on Monday that McIntosh is expected to be available on Saturday.

"[Kenny] had the same thigh bruise that he had already had. He got kind of hit on that same spot. But he feels like he'll be fine," Smart said. "He was fine after the game. He was fine [Sunday]. We may limit him some today, but we feel good about Kenny being able to go."

Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey had a noticeably off game against Kent State last week, and after the game Smart explained McConkey’s reps have been limited a bit as the sophomore deals with a toe injury. Based on what Smart had to say Wednesday, McConkey hasn’t been quite as limited in the preparation for Missouri.

Smart explained McConkey had been limited at practice as a means to limit his volume and added that the sophomore wide receiver has been “much better” this week.

“We shut him down last week for two days, and then he practiced two days. It hasn't bothered him much, so he was able to do everything Monday and Tuesday,” Smart said. “The week before he did everything later in the week but not earlier in the week. So, he's been pretty good this week getting lots of treatment on it and just trying to communicate with us in terms of GPS yardage and volume to make sure that he stays under certain numbers.”

17:41 Dua Lipa ‘smitten’ on Trevor Noah date, in ‘early’ stages of getting acquainted

Dua Lipa was darn near levitating during her dinner date with Trevor Noah earlier this week, Page Six has exclusively learned.

The London-born pop star, 27, and the South African comedian, 38, were spotted Wednesday night sharing an intimate meal at Miss Lily’s in New York City’s East Village, which an insider tells us was a place of Noah’s choosing.

Our informant says Lipa was “smitten” on what was “definitely a date,” though we’re told the pair is in the “very early” stages of getting to know each other.

A separate source tells us Lipa and Noah are not officially a couple.

Photos from the unlikely pair’s outing show them sitting closely during dinner, yet far away from other patrons, before heading off on a stroll afterward.

The duo was seen walking, talking and hugging, with the soon-to-be former talk show host appearing to give the singer-songwriter a kiss.

Our source tells us Noah was “a gentleman” the whole evening and that the two went home “separately.” As for whether the pictures show him planting a smooch on Lipa’s cheek or her lips, we’re told there was “maybe a corner lips kiss.”

Trevor Noah and Dua Lipa Sure Look Cozy

It’s that time of year again: There’s a chill in the air and everyone is soft-launching their relationships. Spotted out looking pretty couple-y this week? Soon-to-be-former Daily Show host Trevor Noah and Dua Lipa.

The pair was seen dining at Miss Lily’s in New York on Wednesday, where they apparently shared a kiss before leaving — and the Daily Mail has the extremely blurry photos to prove it.

Does this mean they’re dating? Who can say. They are both reportedly single. Noah split from on-again-off-again girlfriend Minka Kelly earlier this year while Lipa split from Hadid sibling Anwar Hadid last year. Noah did just announce that he’s stepping down from hosting The Daily Show, so he might be about to have a lot more time on his hands. Either way, congrats to them on the soft launch — and our condolences to Jack Harlow.

Trevor Noah, Dua Lipa spark dating rumors amid his ‘Daily Show’ exit

Outgoing “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah made headlines Thursday for announcing the conclusion of his seven-year stint on the Comedy Central show. But not long before that, he sparked dating rumors with “Levitating” pop star Dua Lipa.

The comedian and “Sweetest Pie” singer were photographed this week apparently locking lips just days before he announced the end of his Emmy-nominated run on the late-night series.

Noah, 38, and Lipa, 27, were spotted Wednesday at Miss Lily’s in the East Village in New York City, according to the Daily Mail, which published several photos of their rendezvous. (The very same publication published a Friday column by Meghan McCain titled “I loved The Daily Show and Trevor Noah ruined it.”)

They “quietly sat away from everyone else at the restaurant,” a source told the tabloid. “It was clear they were into each other and sat close together throughout the meal.”

Noah and Lipa reportedly left together after the meal and took a walk, “stopping for long embraces,” a kiss and hugs.

Representatives for Noah and Lipa did not immediately respond Friday to The Times’ requests for comment.

The rumored romance comes not long after each of them called it quits on their previous high-profile relationships. The “Cold Heart” singer split from her longtime boyfriend, model Anwar Hadid — brother of models Gigi and Bella Hadid — in December. The “Born a Crime” author reportedly ended things with actor-girlfriend Minka Kelly last May.

It’s unclear when their relationship started, though the Daily Mail speculated that they crossed paths at this year’s Grammy Awards, which Noah hosted in Las Vegas last April and where the English singer presented with rapper Megan Thee Stallion. (It was a twinning moment reminiscent of a stunt by music legends Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.)

Noah told his studio audience and viewers Thursday that he would step away from “The Daily Show” seven years after taking over the post from comedian Jon Stewart. He criticized President Trump, hosted luminaries, weathered the volatile COVID-19 pandemic and even feuded with rapper Kanye West during his run. (In case you didn’t read McCain’s piece, the conservative argued that “Noah never lived up to his predecessor” in the ratings and that he “got by on his ‘cool kid’ clout in the media.”)

“It’s time,” the late-night host said Thursday on TV and online.

“I realized there’s another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring. I miss learning other languages. I miss going to other countries and putting on shows,” the South Africa-born comic added. “I miss just being everywhere, doing everything.”

Representatives for the series said that there is “no timetable for his departure” and that they’re “working together on next steps.” Here’s hoping they include addressing the dating rumors in his upcoming monologues.

Dua Lipa, Amal Clooney, and More of the Bestest Party Pics This Week

Happy Friday, New York! It’s the final day of my internship at the Cut, and therefore, my final Party Pics roundup. Throughout the summer, fashionable attendees stunned us at lavish Hamptons parties, brand celebration dinners, and NYFW events. Now, as we enter a new season, things are starting to calm down. Still, Dua Lipa, Julia Fox, and more stepped out this week to celebrate at events including a Chanel launch party, the New York Ballet Fall Fashion Gala, and the Taste of Asia benefit.

Okay, so this isn’t quite a little black dress, but Dua Lipa knew how to pull the color off, wearing this Versace gown with button details to the Clooney Foundation for Justice Albie Awards.

In her beaded Atelier Versace gown at the Clooney Foundation for Justice Albie Awards, Amal Clooney looked straight out of the 1920s. Her husband looked dapper too.

I appreciate Julia Fox’s consistency when it comes to picking daring looks. Fox attended the New York Ballet 2022 Fall Fashion Gala wearing this dramatic metallic gown and sporting bleached eyebrows, because of course she did.

It’s fall, which means it’s time to start bringing out our favorite statement jackets. At the New York Ballet 2022 Fall Fashion Gala, Queen Latifah wore this emerald-green crystal-embellished number.

Soo Joo Park, the face of Chanel’s Première Original Edition watch, sported the timepiece at the dinner to celebrate its launch.

Also in attendance at Chanel’s celebratory dinner, Lily Allen sported a heart-shaped Chanel bag, Chanel shoes, and a Chanel top and trousers. I can’t blame her for wearing the brand from head to toe.

Not all party outfits are created equal, but Jessica Williams managed to choose something both cool and comfortable for the “Entergalactic” Brunch to celebrate Black love. The puffed sleeves and lace detailing are fun, and her white sneakers make me want to wear the outfit asap.

Who said tye-dye can’t be fancy? Anitta wore this multicolored ruffled gown to the Sotheby’s Impact Gala and paired it with a purple asymmetrical bag.

Kelly Ripa and Bethenny Frankel looked ready to celebrate the launch of Ripa’s new book at her dinner party at Scarpetta.

Teddy Quinlivan bravely wore a mostly orange outfit to Zegna’s celebration of the launch of its Oasi Cashmere Collection, and she pulled it off by committing to the color coordination.

Wen Zhou, CEO and co-founder of 3.1 Phillip Lim, and actress Jamie Chung looked chic in their neutral-toned jackets at the second annual Taste of Asia benefit.

Tomás Matos wore this blue-and-white-striped dress with a reddish-orange accent to celebrate the Keith Haring x Pandora collection. They paired their look with a matching purse, hat, and nail polish.

Rachel Trail and Roxette Arisa celebrated the launch of their podcast, Bush Babies, with a late-night soirée. With their cutout leather outfits and grungy makeup, the pair were this week’s resident party girls.

16:22 Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa's injury sparks concern over the NFL's concussion policies
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was carried out on a stretcher Thursday night in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"It was a scary moment," Dolphins Coach Mike McDaniel said. "He was evaluated for a concussion and he's in the concussion protocol. He was at the hospital. I believe he's about to get discharged."

Earlier this week the league union said it would be investigating the Dolphins for its concussion evaluation process after Tagovailoa returned to the game following a hard hit in the first half in the team's Sep. 25 game against the Buffalo Bills.

The Dolphins initially deemed that hit a head injury, but McDaniel walked back the call and said Tagovailoa injured his back, and again confirmed that Thursday night.

So how are teams supposed to evaluate head injuries?

How the NFL defines a concussion
The National Football League defines a sport-related concussion as "a traumatic brain injury induced by biomechanical forces."

Concussions can be caused by direct hits to the head, face, neck or anywhere else on the body that transmits force to the head, the league says.

Observable signs of a concussion include any loss of consciousness, seizures, delayed movement, difficulty with motor or balance coordination, a vacant look, clutching the head, confusion, amnesia or visible face injuries.

Preseason concussion protocols
All players and team employees must receive and review educational materials about concussion at the start of the season and then craft an emergency medical action plan.

Every other year, players must receive baseline neurological evaluation and testing before the season starts. Tests may include a computerized exam or a pencil and paper test, or a combination of both and are administered every three years. More tests may be administered if a player may have sustained a concussion.

Game day protocols
On game day, unaffiliated neurotrauma consultants (UNCs) and athletic trainers are stationed on the sidelines and in a stadium booth to survey the game for any signs of concussion.

If the UNCs or athletic trainers, also called booth spotters, see any sign of a concussion, they must contact the team physician to recommend a sideline examination. A UNC for the opposing team may also make the recommendation.

The player is first sent to the sideline to be checked out, and if any signs of concussion are identified, the player is sent to the locker room for further evaluation and must not return to the game.

If a player is sent back into the game before the medical staff have finished their evaluations, the booth spotter can call a medical time-out until the evaluation is completed.

Once a player has been diagnosed with a concussion, he is not allowed to meet or talk with press or drive on the day of the injury.

Viewers are outraged at the Dolphins' response
Many who watched the game were extremely critical of how the Dolphins have treated Tagovailoa over the past week, saying he should not have been cleared to play Thursday in the first place.

"The bottom line regarding Tua is LIFE is bigger than football," former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III said. "Teams should always put the person before the player. Health before competitive advantage. Putting Tua out there isn't just a player safety issue. It's a quality of life issue."

NFL Hall of Famer and Fox Sports commentator Shannon Sharpe said in one tweet he believes the Dolphins are lying about Tagovailoa sustaining a back injury, not a head injury, last week.

"That's a serious injury," he said in another. "Tua shouldn't have been out there with Sunday Thursday turnaround. Sometimes players need protecting from themselves. Dolphins failed Tua."

17:41 Giants’ Promising Start Fades Under Cowboy Pressure
Daniel Jones took five sacks as the Giants’ offense failed to make a case it should remain intact.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — One drive late in the fourth quarter Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys summed up the state of the Giants perfectly. Trailing by 7 with about seven minutes remaining, Daniel Jones threw two of his best passes of the night, but his receivers, Sterling Shepard and Kenny Golladay, dropped them.

The drive stalled at the Giants’ 22-yard line, and KaVontae Turpin’s punt return put the Cowboys in position for a 44-yard field goal, essentially sealing the contest, which finished as a 23-16 Dallas victory.

“You can’t let these things linger, just like you can’t let a win linger,” the first-year coach Brian Daboll said in a postgame news conference. “To ride the roller coaster, there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs throughout the year with any team.”

The optimism surrounding the Giants’ first 2-0 start since 2016 quickly turned to frustration as the game opened with a sloppy first half in which both teams missed field-goal attempts and went into halftime with the Cowboys ahead, 6-3. Dallas receiver CeeDee Lamb also dropped a potential touchdown pass.

It soon transformed into a back-and-forth affair, as both teams scored rushing touchdowns on successive drives. After the Giants opened the second half with Graham Gano kicking a 51-yard field goal to tie the score, the team’s next possession finished with running back Saquon Barkley sorting through a congested line of scrimmage to burst into the end zone for a 36-yard score to put the Giants up by 13-6 after the extra point.

The Cowboys responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that culminated with an Ezekiel Elliott 1-yard touchdown run.

But in the fourth quarter, Giants errors allowed Dallas to pull away. On a Cowboys’ first-and-10 from the Giants’ 27-yard line, a defensive breakdown allowed Dallas quarterback Cooper Rush to find Lamb for a 26-yard completion. Lamb finished the drive with an acrobatic one-handed catch for a 1-yard touchdown that pushed the score to 20-13 with nearly eight minutes remaining.

Jones could find no such breakthroughs. He finished with 196 passing yards and was sacked five times as the Cowboys’ pass rush constantly pressured him.

In the Giants’ final offensive possession, with about one minute remaining and a chance to tie the game, Jones threw an interception to cornerback Trevon Diggs, ending any comeback attempt.

But Jones’s teammates said they admired his toughness and blamed the offensive performance on drops and poor protection.

“We have to be better — we have to make plays for him,” Barkley said after the game. “Daniel is a hell of a competitor.”

On the Giants’ last offensive play, Shepard appeared to injure his leg and was carted off the field. Barkley, who is trying to revive his career after years of serious injuries, rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

The Giants had earned close victories in their first two games, overcoming a 13-point deficit to beat the Titans, 21-20, in Week 1 and besting the Panthers, 19-13, in a sluggish offensive outing in Week 2. The contests allowed Daboll and the new general manager, Joe Schoen, to evaluate their roster with an eye toward the future. Because of questionable contracts doled out by the previous leadership group, the Giants’ brass entered the season with salary-cap trouble. Next year, when those contracts are alleviated, they will have an expected $60 million to operate in free agency. The Giants this off-season must also decide on the future of Jones and Barkley, who are both playing on the last years of their rookie contracts.

“I think where we are right now, we’re going to compete as hard as we can in 2022 with what we have and continue to turn over the back end of the roster,” Schoen said in an interview at the Giants facility in late August. “But you come out of it next year maybe in good financial health and a second draft and really start to really build the foundation. We’re going to try to build it the right way.”

The new leadership has been bold in its strategy, and has not apologized for its methods. Golladay, the receiver acquired in free agency by the Giants’ former leadership last season, has played sparingly, as has the 2021 first-round pick Kadarius Toney.

“I think something we want to create is as competitive of a team as we can,” Daboll said last week in a news conference. “Regardless of where you’re drafted, how you got here, how much money you make, we believe in everybody goes out there and competes, and we play the guys that earn the right to play that week.”

The rookie offensive tackle Evan Neal struggled on Monday night, allowing three sacks against the veteran defensive tackle DeMarcus Lawrence. Kayvon Thibodeaux, the rookie edge rusher who played in his first game for the Giants since injuring his knee in a preseason game, registered one tackle.

The Cowboys, contrastingly, won while overcoming key injuries and mistakes. The backup quarterback, Rush, playing while Dallas’s star quarterback, Dak Prescott, recovers from thumb surgery, threw for 215 yards and a touchdown, while the running backs Elliott and Tony Pollard combined for 178 rushing yards. Lamb caught eight passes for 87 yards and a score.

15:17 Top 3 things we learned from Bills vs. Dolphins | Week 3
The Bills knew they were going into Sunday's game supremely shorthanded missing four starters on defense as well as their starting center on offense. But it didn't impact their effort and mettle in oppressively hot conditions in Miami on Sunday.

The steamy and humid conditions sapped the roster of any depth it had left as players left the game due to heat exhaustion or an injury as the game neared halftime.

Right tackle Spencer Brown was struggling with heat illness and exited the game in the first half as well with David Quessenberry coming on for him. TE Dawson Knox and WR Isaiah McKenzie also succumbed to the heat, though McKenzie was able to return to the game.

"It was so hot," said McKenzie, a south Florida native. "It was hot the whole game. I started throwing up, so I'm like, 'Okay, I'm going to just take a breather.' So, I came out and had to come back to the locker room and get an IV. I thought was used to this just coming from Miami, but I guess I'm more familiar with Buffalo at this moment."

Fellow south Florida native Greg Rousseau confirmed McKenzie's assessment of the weather.

"It was up there like top two top three hottest I'd say," said Rousseau who played his college ball in the same stadium for the University of Miami. "We had a real hot game against Georgia Tech, but even in college football, you don't always kick off at 1 pm. You get like four o'clock kick off. Sometimes it's a night game. Being out there at 1pm is different."

In addition to the players having to retire from the heat, there were other players leaving the game with injuries. WR Jake Kumerow sustained an ankle injury after making a reception in the first half and could not return to the game leaving Buffalo with just four receivers. Rookie CB Christian Benford sustained a hand injury, and though he returned to the game he could only play on special teams. It forced undrafted rookie practice squad call up Ja'Marcus Ingram to play at corner.

Come the second half the situation only got worse. On Buffalo's 20-play field goal drive in the third quarter Buffalo would also lose RG Ryan Bates to a head injury. In the latter stages of the fourth quarter, backup C Greg Van Roten had to be replaced by Greg Mancz.

Several other players on offense sustained muscle cramps, as the unit was on the field for 90 plays and had to step out briefly and then return to the game. But none of Sean McDermott's men who took the field ever gave up.

"I told them in the locker room after the game… I didn't even bring them up for a huddle because they all couldn't move, that that was a heck of an effort," said McDermott. "You never want to come up short. There are no ribbons for second place, and they know that. And so, we go back, we learn from this, and I think we'll learn things that were really good about this game. One of those is the guts and heart and the intangibles of our football team. And I think we've learned some things that weren't very good, which led to the result. We just didn't take care of the ball enough and come up with some takeaways but again, I liked the way we fought in all three phases until the end."

What made the result so difficult to take was Buffalo won in just about every statistical category of the game. They outgained Miami by more than a 2:1 margin with 497 total yards to the Dolphins 212.

Their offense was almost twice as effective converting third downs, but the difference in the game came in the red zone where Miami went a perfect 3-for-3 and the Bills went 2-for-4 in the two-point loss.

"That's sometimes the way the business goes," said Josh Allen, who threw for 400 yards on the day and a pair of touchdowns. "Guys go down. We only dressed so many guys. Guys have got to step up. I'm proud of the guys that played, obviously, injuries you hate to see him happen. You'd love to get them back as soon as possible and we'll figure that out later, but our guys stepped up. I was proud of how our team played. We obviously didn't make enough plays on the offensive side of the football. We had a couple that I want back obviously so lots to learn from in this one but overall proud of our guys and how they battled."

"This team's got no quit in us" | Bills players and coaches stay confident following loss

Amid the tough 21-19 loss to the Miami Dolphins, head coach Sean McDermott and the Bills locker room remain confident after the resilience they showed between the team's injuries sustained prior to and during Sunday's game — and 100 degrees-plus field temperates in Miami.

Looking past the final score and their first loss of the season, the Bills still had plenty of positive takeaways from Sunday's game.

Bills locker room remains confident and encouraged

The limited depth the Bills had in certain positions throughout the game mixed with the Miami heat presented a tough challenge to the Bills' sidelines on Sunday afternoon. But even though they didn't come away with the outcome they were hoping for, the locker room remains confident in what the team is capable of accomplishing this season.

14:18 Floyd Mayweather drugs Mikuru Asakura in boxing exhibition match in Japan
Floyd Mayweather is still winning boxing matches, even if they won't go on his official pro record.

The legendary boxer stopped Japanese MMA fighter and YouTuber Mikuru Asakura at the end of the second round with a big right hand on Sunday's Rizin Fighting Federation card in Saitama, Japan. It was Mayweather's second exhibition match this year and his second in Japan since his retirement from pro fights.

Mayweather will reportedly make in the range of $20 million for the bout, which was scheduled for three rounds. Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather's old rival, was ringside.

"I would like to thank the whole country of Japan," Mayweather said afterward. "Unbelievable country, unbelievable people. An exciting, incredible turnout. Round of applause for this great competitor right here."

After an uneventful first round in which Asakura landed some body shots, he had some success in the second round, connecting several times to Mayweather's head with lefts and rights from a southpaw stance.

But Mayweather, one of the best boxers ever and the highest-grossing combat sports athlete of all time, came back with hard shots of his own. He landed hard to the body right before the finish then set up Asakura for the big right at the second-round bell, which ultimately ended the bout.

Asakura was slow getting up, and referee Kenny Bayless waved the fight off before either boxer got to his corner after the second.

"Thanks for having me," Mayweather told the crowd. "I'll be back."

Mayweather, 45, acknowledged Pacquiao in attendance in his postfight speech, calling him oddly a "future" world champion. Pacquiao, 43, addressed the fans before the exhibition and again afterward.

Prior to the fight, Pacquiao said Asakura, 30, had traveled to the Philippines to ask him for advice on how to compete against Mayweather. Pacquiao added that he was in attendance to support Asian combat sports. Afterward, Pacquiao said twice that he hopes he'll be invited back, causing the commentators to speculate that there could be something brewing with Rizin, Mayweather and Pacquiao.

"I hope this is not my last invitation to watch a good fight, a good exhibition," Pacquiao said.

In a strange scenario before the bout, a man who was supposed to bring Mayweather flowers -- a combat sports tradition in Japan -- threw the bouquet down on the canvas rather than handing it to Mayweather.

In a strange scenario before the bout, a man who was supposed to bring Mayweather flowers -- a combat sports tradition in Japan -- threw the bouquet down on the canvas rather than handing it to Mayweather.

In December 2019, Mayweather finished Japanese kickboxing prodigy Tenshin Nasukawa in the first round after three knockdowns. Nasukawa competes at around 120 pounds. Asakura was much closer to Mayweather's weight, perhaps a bit bigger, on Saturday, though there was no official contracted weight.

In an undercard bout to the Mayweather vs. Asakura headliner, Mayweather's bodyguard Ray "Jizzy Mack" Sadeghi was knocked out in a boxing match by 135-pound kickboxer Kouzi. There was no weigh-in, but Sadeghi was significantly larger than Kouzi in the ring.

Mayweather had an exhibition bout against Don Moore in May in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Mayweather has said he will participate in another such matchup in the Middle East before the end of the year, though no opponent has been named.

Amanda Serrano defeats Sarah Mahfoud to unify featherweight titles

MANCHESTER, England -- Amanda Serrano resumed normal service on Saturday, responding to her second professional defeat earlier this year by picking up another world title with a unanimous-decision win over Sarah Mahfoud.

In a mostly one-sided affair, Serrano earned convincing scores of 99-92, 97-93, 97-93 to unify the world featherweight titles at the AO Arena. She rebounded from a decision loss to Ireland's Katie Taylor for all four world lightweight titles in April.

Serrano (43-2-1, 30 KO), ESPN's No. 3 pound-for-pound fighter and No. 1 featherweight, now holds three of the four world title belts at 126 pounds. It was her 14th win in 16 world title fights.

Erika Cruz (15-1, 3 KOs), 32, from Mexico, holds the WBA featherweight title and is a potential future opponent for Serrano if she wants to become undisputed world champion. Another option for Serrano would be to step up a division again and face the winner of the junior lightweight title unification clash between Americans Mikaela Mayer (17-0, 5 KOs), the IBF and WBO junior champion, and Alycia Baumgardner (12-1, 7 KOs), the WBC titleholder, who meet in London on Oct. 15.

For Serrano, a Brooklyn-based Puerto Rican, Saturday's fight marked a convincing return following a split-decision defeat to Taylor (21-0, 6 KOs) at Madison Square Garden. Serrano did her best work in the first half of the fight, before allowing Mahfoud to assert herself more in the later rounds, but the decision was never in doubt.

Mahfoud (11-1, 3 KO), 32, from Denmark, was making a second defense of her IBF title. In the biggest fight of her career, she quickly discovered Serrano's experience and ring IQ were too much for her to overcome.

16:14 NHC forecasts Tropical Storm Ian will hit Florida as Category 3 hurricane
Tropical Depression Nine strengthened into Tropical Storm Ian Friday night.

This system is forecast to hit Florida as a Category 3 hurricane next week.

As of 5 a.m. Saturday, Tropical Storm Ian had strengthened while moving west over the Central Caribbean and was moving west at 14 mph.

Ian had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and was located 315 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and 600 miles east-southeast of Grand Cayman.

The NHC advises hurricane conditions are possible in the Cayman Islands by early Monday.

The Florida Keys and South Florida can expect heavy rains to begin as early as Monday. Some flash and urban flooding is possible with this rainfall, according to the NHC.

"Rapid intensification is forecast Monday through Wednesday over some very warm water," WESH 2 Meteorologist Tony Mainolfi said. "GFS model continues to be slower and west of Euro with the forecast cone between these two models tonight. Intensity forecasts remain very impressive in the Category 2 - Category 4 range."

The National Weather Service has urged Florida residents and visitors to gather supplies and keep tracking the forecast.

HOW YOUR SMARTPHONE CAN HELP DURING A HURRICANE

A smartphone can be your best friend in a hurricane — with the right websites and apps, you can turn it into a powerful tool for guiding you through a storm’s approach, arrival and aftermath.

Download the WESH 2 News app for iOS | Android

Enable emergency alerts — if you have an iPhone, select settings, then go into notifications. From there, look for government alerts and enable emergency alerts.

If you have an Android phone, from the home page of the app, scroll to the right along the bottom and click on "settings." On the settings menu, click on "severe weather alerts." From the menu, select from most severe, moderate-severe, or all alerts.

Your pet should be a part of your family plan. If you must evacuate, the most important thing you can do to protect your pets is to evacuate them too. Leaving pets behind, even if you try to create a safe space for them, could result in injury or death.

Contact hotels and motels outside of your immediate area to see if they take pets.

Ask friends, relatives and others outside of the affected area whether they could shelter your animal.

20:06 Steelers' Mike Tomlin not considering QB change after loss to Browns on Thursday nigh
Questions surrounding the Steelers' quarterback situation will come as frequently as the losses do in Pittsburgh during the 2022 season, but you can expect head coach Mike Tomlin to remain consistent on the matter in the immediate aftermath of defeat.

Tomlin gave a clear-cut answer when asked if he will re-evaluate Mitchell Trubisky's status as team's starting QB following Thursday night's 29-17 loss to the division-rival Cleveland Browns. His resolve was reminiscent of that during the Steelers' QB competition this past summer.

"I'm not in that mindset," Tomlin said postgame. "I'm interested in reviewing his tape and looking at the totality of it and figuring how we collectively get better.

"So, the answer to that question is definitively no."

Forgoing any knee-jerk reactions has been a consistent approach from Tomlin since the preseason. However, with rookie Kenny Pickett waiting in the wings and Pittsburgh fans letting Trubisky hear it in last week's home-opening loss, the storyline is seemingly on the brink of turning a page.

Trubisky's night wasn't all that bad on paper, especially in the first half. The Steelers went into halftime with a 14-13 lead thanks to Trubisky's mistake-free start as he went 9-of-13 passing for 109 yards and scored one of Pittsburgh's two touchdowns on a 1-yard run.

Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada set Trubisky up for success with crafty play-calling that played into his QB's strengths, but a well-adjusted Browns defense was ready for it in the second half, where the Steelers punted on four of five drives and mustered just three points in the defeat.

"I feel like I'm in a good rhythm with my routine," said Trubisky, who finished 20 of 32 for 207 yards passing. "Felt good tonight -- just got to be better in the second half."

According to Next Gen Stats, 78.1% of Trubisky's attempts were thrown outside the numbers and he was 9 of 12 for 129 yards on intermediate passes. Trubisky completed just 1 of 6 deep passes for 36 yards, and the lone connection was due in large part to George Pickens' amazing catch.

Once the Browns took away the sidelines and forced Trubisky to throw down the middle, the Steelers offense stagnated and made life easy for a Browns defense that blew a late lead last Sunday. At the end of the night, Pittsburgh had 308 yards of total offense and converted just 1 of 11 third downs.

Perhaps Tomlin will have a better idea after reviewing the tape, but the respected Steelers coach could be facing his first losing record in 16 seasons if he doesn't find a solution to the struggling Steelers offense quickly.

"I thought he made some plays but we all collectively came up short, and so that's how we measure performance -- winning is our business and we didn't handle business," Tomlin said. "So we don't break that apart and look for the feel-good."

Cleveland Browns bounce back from embarrassing loss to beat rival Pittsburgh Steelers

CLEVELAND -- Nick Chubb ran for 113 yards and a touchdown as the Cleveland Browns took control in the second half to beat the rival Pittsburgh Steelers 29-17 on Thursday at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper gave up the onside kick that allowed the New York Jets to pull off a stunning comeback Sunday. Thursday night against the Steelers, Cooper more than atoned for that mistake.

He finished with seven receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown, propelling the Browns to victory.

"We've got to own it, learn from it and flush it," Cooper said this week of the collapse against the Jets. Cooper spearheaded Cleveland's rebound performance, as the Browns (2-1) claimed first place in the AFC North standings.

Pivotal play: On third-and-1 to begin the fourth quarter, quarterback Jacoby Brissett faked a handoff to Chubb. Cooper, meanwhile, dashed away from Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton before hauling in a 32-yard reception at the Pittsburgh 39-yard line. Cleveland punched the ball into the end zone eight plays later to go up by two scores. With the key play-action reception, Cooper became the first Browns player in nine years to finish with more than 100 yards receiving and a receiving touchdown in back-to-back games.

QB breakdown: Brissett delivered another solid performance in his third start for the Browns. He tossed a pair of touchdowns in the first half, the first to Cooper on a slant, the other to tight end David Njoku at the back of the end zone. Brissett finished the game 21-of-31 passing for 220 yards as he continued to steady the Browns' offense.

Troubling trend: The Browns lost both starting linebackers to injury, including Anthony Walker, who was carted off the field with a left knee injury. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah also left the game with a quad injury. Cleveland was already missing defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who injured his ankle last weekend. -- Jake Trotter

Underrated statistic to know: Cooper now has a receiving TD in consecutive games. No Browns wide receiver caught a receiving touchdown in consecutive games last season.

The Steelers preached an aggressive approach to the offense after two weeks of underwhelming performances. For a half, they delivered.

But a disappointing second half from an offense that couldn't sustain drives coupled with a defense that couldn't generate a pass rush or run defense buried the Steelers (1-2) in the loss to the Browns.

Troubling trend: For the second week in a row, the Steelers struggled to get an effective pass rush going in T.J. Watt's absence. Larry Ogunjobi and Alex Highsmith combined for a sack early, but that was the only one until late in the fourth quarter. With the pass rush faltering, Brissett was pressured on only three of his 23 dropbacks in the first half. And on the back end, the Steelers' secondary had a series of breakdowns and miscommunications that led to big plays and touchdowns. Terrell Edmunds was in the wrong position on the Browns' first score, an 11-yard pass from Brissett to Cooper, giving the receiver too much room. Cooper feasted on the secondary, racking up 101 yards on seven catches. The ineffective pass rush also contributed to the Browns' ability to run the ball freely, and Chubb (23 carries, 113 yards) and Kareem Hunt (12 carries, 47 yards) carved up the Steelers' defense.

19:25 Putin announces a partial military mobilization for Russian citizens
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a "partial mobilization" of Russia's armed forces on Wednesday morning — signing a decree that will send Russians who have gone through military training to join the fight in Ukraine while stopping short of an all-out draft.

"Only those citizens will be drafted to military service who are currently in the reserve and first of all those who have served in the army, who have certain professions and have necessary experience," will be recruited for the campaign, said Putin in a televised address to the nation.

The announcement came just a day after some Russian-controlled areas in Ukraine announced plans for referendums on becoming part of Russia. The choreographed series of events was reminiscent of the Russian leader's announcement to send tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February.

Putin's Wednesday announcement also came as his country has struggled to replenish its fighting force in Ukraine and suffered setbacks on the battlefield amid a surging Ukrainian counteroffensive.

In a separate television interview, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia would immediately call up 300,000 reservists to "hold the line at the front" in Ukraine.

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink tweeted that Russia is showing "signs of weakness" and "failure" for escalating the war with Ukraine and vowed, "The United States will never recognize Russia's claim to purportedly annexed Ukrainian territory, and we will continue to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes."

In his address, Putin said the larger force was necessary as Ukraine continued to receive heavy weaponry from a "collective West" intent on "weakening, isolating, and destroying Russia."

The Russian leader also insisted Russia had a moral obligation to protect civilians in partially Russian-occupied portions of Ukraine as they held a series of "referendums" aimed at joining the Russian Federation later this week.

Putin also accused Western powers of providing Ukraine with long-range weapon systems that can strike deep into Russian territory — and again accused Ukraine and its allies of menacing Russia with nuclear threats. Putin warned Russia and its people would use "all available means" in their defense — noting Russia had its own capable nuclear arsenal. "This is no bluff," Putin said.

"Those who are blackmailing us with nuclear weapons should know – the rose winds can change and blow in their direction."

The defense minister also provided new figures on Russian casualties — saying 5,937 Russian soldiers had died fighting in Ukraine. Western estimates run much higher.

Putin drafts up to 300,000 reservists, backs annexation amid war losses

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a partial military mobilization Wednesday to call up as many as 300,000 reservists in a dramatic bid to reverse setbacks in his war on Ukraine, including Russia’s recent humiliating retreat in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

In a national address broadcast at 9 a.m. Moscow time, Putin lashed out at the West, backed staged referendums being planned as a precursor to annexation of occupied areas of Ukraine, and hinted ominously that he was ready to use nuclear weapons to defend Russian territory — as he defines it.

“In the face of a threat to the territorial integrity of our country, to protect Russia and our people, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal,” Putin warned. “This is not a bluff,” he said, in a clear reference to Russia’s nuclear capabilities.

“I will emphasize this again — with all the means at our disposal,” he added.

Brimming with resentment and anger at the West’s backing of Ukraine, Putin called the war an effort by Western elites to destroy and dismember Russia, directly framing the war as a confrontation between Moscow and NATO countries.

Those comments were reinforced in a separate address by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, although Western leaders — including President Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz — urged Putin not to invade and have restricted support for Ukraine to signal that their nations are not directly fighting Russia.

Putin’s blunt, uncompromising rhetoric underscored his growing isolation, as Russia’s war on Ukraine dominated discussions Tuesday at the annual U.N. General Assembly meetings, where world leaders condemned military violence and lamented the global hardship caused by chaos in food supply chains and soaring energy prices.

The staged referendums being organized by Kremlin proxies have been condemned by many Western officials as “sham votes.”

“The United States will never recognize Russia’s claims” to Ukrainian territories purportedly annexed by Russia, Jake Sullivan, the U.S. national security adviser, said Tuesday. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, British Prime Minister Liz Truss and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio also condemned the move.

But Putin has paid scant attention, leveraging Western condemnation to try to convince Russians that the West is out to destroy Russia.

Slamming “aggressive” Western elites and their “pseudo-values,” Putin accused the West of trying to orchestrate a Soviet-style collapse of Russia itself.

“The purpose of this West is to weaken, divide and ultimately destroy our country,” he said in a speech that was clearly aimed at shifting public ambivalence into stronger national support for the war effort. “They are already directly saying that in 1991, they were able to split the Soviet Union, and now the time has come for Russia itself, that it should disintegrate into many mortally hostile regions.”

“They made total Russophobia their weapon, including for decades purposefully cultivating hatred for Russia,” he said, adding that the West was using Ukraine as an “anti-Russian beachhead.”

17:59 Spadaro: Eagles shine under the bright lights of Monday Night Football
The stars were out as the Eagles opened the 2022 home season on Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings. They peppered the stands – stars from the world of sports (James Harden, Bryce Harper) and movie stars (Bradley Cooper) and television actors (Quinta Brunson) and musicians (Questlove) – and they came out in full throat and with great energy – a prime-time crowd for a Monday Night Football game.

In their second game of the year, the Eagles gave them all exactly what they wanted: A wire-to-wire win in a national-spotlight moment, 24-7 over the Vikings that felt every bit as good as the final score. The Eagles served notice of what happens when the offense puts on a video-game kind of performance and the defense clamps down on one of the best attacks in the NFL.

It was football poetry as the Eagles upped their record to 2-0, and while the team will quickly wash the win and focus on a road trip to Washington on a short week, it was something to behold.

"It felt great out there, it really did," said defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, who had three total tackles, a quarterback sack, and a forced fumble. "It was electric. The crowd was awesome. You could feel the electricity and, man, we just came out flying around on offense and on defense."

The list of standouts starts with quarterback Jalen Hurts because he was magnificent in every way from the very start of the game. On the Eagles' first possession to open the game, Hurts completed all five of his passes to four different receivers for 63 yards on an 11-play, 82-yard touchdown drive that he ended with a 3-yard touchdown run on which Hurts dragged three defenders into the end zone.

Overall, Hurts was just about perfect: He completed 26 of 31 passes for 333 yards, one touchdown, and an interception (a pass that went off the hands of running back Kenneth Gainwell) and ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Hurts escaped pressure when there was some, he threw to his receivers on time, he read everything the Vikings threw at him from a scheme standpoint, and he delivered in the clutch. On a 75-yard drive that ended the first half with a Jake Elliott field goal to boost the lead to 24-7, Hurts started with a first down at the Philadelphia 5-yard line and gave the offense some breathing room with a 9-yard run. Instead of killing the clock and preserving a two-touchdown lead, Head Coach Nick Sirianni had Hurts drop back and wing it.

"We ran for a first down there just to get some room and then it was on Jalen and he stepped up and delivered," tight end Dallas Goedert said. "Coach showed a lot of confidence in the offense, in Jalen in particular. Jalen was just outstanding."

Hurts certainly was as he rushed the Eagles into scoring position, completing passes to DeVonta Smith (16 yards) and two to Goedert (19 yards and 24 yards) to set Elliott up for the 38-yard field goal going into the half.

That drive was just an example of Hurts' brilliance. He threw a perfect 53-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Quez Watkins, who ran a great combo route with Goedert – Goedert lined up inside Watkins and ran a route toward the sideline, drawing two Vikings defenders, and Watkins ran his route straight down the field into a wide-open zone and Hurts found him for the easy pitch-and-catch score.

Hurts also accounted for the team's third touchdown when he had a sensational 26-yard touchdown run, a designed run on which he carried to the right side, followed a Goedert block on safety Harrison Smith and then again broke multiple tackles before lunging into the end zone.

"Great run," Goedert said. "I had a chance to make a block and I was able to get my body on the guy (Smith) but then it was all Jalen. He showed his power. He played a great game in every way. He led the offense once again."

There was a lot more on this night, though. Some of the macro-level storylines to appreciate ...

1. A lot of the beauty of this offensive night on which the Eagles racked up 486 yards was the balance of the offense. The running game accounted for 163 yards on 34 attempts. Eight different receivers caught passes, with Smith catching seven passes for 80 yards on seven targets and A.J. Brown contributing five catches and 69 yards. Goedert was a beast with five catches, a game-high 82 yards, and a stellar job blocking. The offense opened with some no-huddle tempo that center Jason Kelce said "got them (the Vikings) tired up front." The Eagles used Smith out of the slot, moved Brown around, and really had success with their formation variation. Sirianni and Offensive Coordinator Shane Steichen have the offense cooking and they are utilizing every weapon on that side of the ball.

16:42 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Week 2 preview: New Orleans Saints
Here is a look at the second game of the 2022 season for the Buccaneers as they face off against the New Orleans Saints in a tough matchup.

Today, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be taking on the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans in a fight of 1-0 teams looking to take command of the NFC South early.

The Saints, like Tampa, won their first game of the season, but they did it in a 1-point, come from WAY behind victory against Atlanta. They came back from 16 points down in the start of the fourth quarter, but let’s be honest, they should have never been down if we are comparing their talent level to Atlanta’s. The highly-touted Saints defense giving up 26 points and 420 total yards probably shocked some people.

Somehow though, no matter what situation the Saints are in, they always seem to be ready for Tampa Bay.

Do you realize it has been almost 4 YEARS since the Bucs have beat the saints in a regular season matchup? The Saints have taken the last 7 straight games in this divisional rivalry. The last game we played against them Tampa Bay actually got shut out entirely. We can not look past this game and expect an easy win because nothing is guaranteed in this game.

How do this year’s teams matchup?

Well, due to injuries along our offensive line and their proven pass rush ability, our offensive game plan will likely be centered around establishing the run, short to medium passes, and occasional deep shots where we keep our running backs beside Brady to block.

I know that’s not the most exciting gameplay in the world, but these guys generate a lot of pressure and use that to create turnovers, and with our depleted offensive line, we have to play smart. Keeping Tom Brady upright is not only key to this game, but our season hinges on it. The good thing about that, is that is exactly where Atlanta’s offense excelled against the Saints.

Cordarelle Patterson was able to break free for 120 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. If our running backs can see similar success, we know Brady can be lethal getting through his progressions quickly and diagnosing a defense. Our biggest key will be being able to sustain the protection around Brady, particularly if his blindside protector, Donovan Smith, is unable to go due to the elbow he hyperextended in last week’s game against Dallas.

While their offense is on the field, a lot will depend on the playing status of their top running back Alvin Kamara, who is dealing with a rib injury after their win over Atlanta. Kamara is a game changer that the New Orleans offense can run through both in the run game, and as an option receiving the ball out of the backfield. If Kamara is unable to play, or is limited, the Saints will likely turn to Mark Ingram II, along with utilizing Taysom Hill in some versatile ways to get the offense going. It is also worth noting that they did just sign Latavius Murray to their practice squad.

We are all well acquainted to their quarterback, Jamies Winston. Winston as a quarterback is high risk and high reward, but he took care of the ball pretty well in Week One. His top target in the first week was not the prime veteran Michael Thomas, it was not the potential breakout rookie Chris Olave…. It was actually Jarvis Landry, who came over from the Cleveland Browns. Our defense will need to really focus on putting on the pressure to force Jamies into making mistakes.

Our secondary should be able to keep up with the Saints receivers, just as they did against the Cowboys in a masterful Week One performance, so applying pressure and stopping the run will be key to making their offense press into bad decisions, leading to turnover opportunity.

Will our pass rush be up to the challenge? As shown in the tweeted graphic below, Shaq Barrett had the highest pass rush win rate % in the league last week…. So you know he’s going to be ready!

While this is an away game, and one we can not overlook, I believe this is a really good opportunity for us to break the streak that New Orleans has been holding against us!
