18:06 Patrice Bergeron gets 1,000th point with assist in Bruins' win
TAMPA, Fla. -- Patrice Bergeron got his 1,000th career point with a second-period assist and the Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 on Monday night for their seventh straight win.

Bergeron became the fourth Boston player and 94th in NHL history to reach the milestone with the second assist on Brad Marchand's goal at 15:08 that gave the Bruins a 4-1 lead.

Marchand immediately pointed at Bergeron after scoring his goal and the Boston bench emptied to celebrate with the 37-year-old center along the boards.

"That was probably the most special thing about it,'' Bergeron said. "All the guys kind of jump on and share that with them. It's great. That's something I will remember for a long time.''

The other Boston players to reach 1,000 points are Ray Bourque (1,506), Johnny Bucyk (1,339) and Phil Esposito (1,012), who was at the game as a Lightning radio broadcaster. Bergeron is the 41st player to have 1,000 points with one franchise.

"The players love him," Boston coach Jim Montgomery said. "I joked around the other day, I'm like, if he had any kind of cheat in his game he might have 1,200 points already, or 1,300. He's just so dedicated to playing the game the right way and helping the team have success."

Montgomery compared Bergeron, a five-time Selke Trophy winner as the league's top defensive forward, to Montreal great Bob Gainey.

"I think historically Bob Gainey's been the best defensive player in the game,'' Montgomery said. "I had the fortune of watching him in his hey-day with Montreal. What Patrice has done as a center, there is so much more responsibility, he might go ahead of Bob as the greatest of all-time.''

David Krejci, Nick Foligno, Charlie Coyle and David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins, who improved to 17-2. Linus Ullmark made 32 saves.

Boston needs two wins to match the 1929-30 Bruins squad that started the season a franchise-best 19-2.

Nick Paul scored twice and Rudolfs Balcers had the other Lightning goal. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 25 shots.

"That's why they're an elite team in the league, when they waned they kept it together and stuck with it,'' Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper. "When it didn't go our way, we didn't handle it that well. Two good teams. It was a good game for the most part, but they deserved more than we did.''

Tampa Bay had won four in a row.

Foligno and Coyle scored 31 seconds apart in the second to put Boston up 3-1.

Foligno, who took a shot off the chin during the morning skate, had a rebound power-play goal at 5:07.

Coyle was credited with his in-close goal after a video review. It was originally called no-goal when the referees ruled the net had come loose before the puck cleared the goal line.

Pastrnak, on the power play, and Balcers traded goals 11 seconds apart early in the third before Paul's man-advantage goal made it 5-3 at 10:38.

Pastrnak has 13 goals in 15 games against Vasilevskiy, and extended his point streak to seven games (4 goals, 10 points).

Paul and Krejci had first-period goals. Krejci has four goals during a three-game goal streak.

Tampa Bay outshot 9-0 over the first eight minutes of the game.

Devils top Oilers for 13th straight win, tying franchise record

NEWARK, N.J. -- As the New Jersey Devils celebrated their franchise record-tying 13th consecutive victory Monday night, a sold-out home crowd rose to its feet to commemorate the moment.

"I think the team deserves a standing ovation. A run like this is incredible," Devils coach Lindy Ruff said following his team's 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

The Devils previously won 13 straight games from Feb. 16 to March 23, 2001, a team that would go on to play for the Stanley Cup. Their current streak started Oct. 25 and has fueled New Jersey's stunning surge to the top of the Metropolitan Division (16-3-0) after finishing 28th in the NHL last season.

"We're up there [in] the history book. Nobody's gonna take that from us now," said captain Nico Hischier, who had three assists in the win. "It proves that we're a good team. That we can win hockey games. That we don't have to hide anymore."

The Devils can set a franchise record for consecutive wins when they meet the Toronto Maple Leafs at home Wednesday night. The all-time NHL record for most consecutive victories is 17 straight, set by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins -- a streak that ended with a tie against the Devils in the last game of the regular season.

Monday marked the second time New Jersey has defeated Edmonton during this current win streak; the Devils rallied to beat the Oilers 4-3 in Edmonton on Nov. 3.

New Jersey jumped out to a lead Monday night on winger Jesper Bratt's first-period power-play goal, his eighth of the season. Edmonton answered with its own power-play tally from star Leon Draisaitl (11th). But the Devils built a lead they wouldn't surrender during the second period on goals by center Dawson Mercer -- scored thanks to a miscue by Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner -- and defenseman Damon Severson, set up by pinpoint passes from Bratt and center Jack Hughes (two assists).

Edmonton pulled within one goal thanks to a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tally at 4:52 of the third period, but the Devils answered back just under 2:15 later as Tomas Tatar gloved his own rebound and then smacked the puck past Skinner. Yegor Sharangovich closed out the scoring after an Oilers turnover at 14:45 of the third.

Goalie Vitek Vanecek, who has appeared in 10 of New Jersey's 13 straight victories, made 27 saves to clinch the win. Vanecek was acquired from the Washington Capitals in the offseason.

"It's great to be here. When you're winning it's more fun," he said. "If you are losing, it's not fun, you know? So we are winning right now, and it's really fun."

Ruff praised the effort of Vanecek and his entire team but cautioned that any celebration comes with a sense of the long road ahead for the Devils.

"I feel like we haven't proven anything yet. I think we've done a lot of good things. We've played good hockey. But we're 19 games in," he said. "We've had a great run, but we know we're the hunted now. We can expect the best that every team can bring because we're getting recognition. That part we're going to have to deal with."

For now, the Devils are enjoying a hot streak that's matched any in the history of the franchise.

"It's definitely one of the most fun stretches I've ever been part of," Hischier said. "I don't want it to end. It's definitely just fun. Like we say, just keep riding away the wave."

Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin plays in 1,000th NHL game

CHICAGO -- Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin played in his 1,000th NHL game on Sunday night, becoming the 11th player to reach the milestone with the franchise.

Malkin scored in the Penguins' 5-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, part of an offensive onslaught that helped Pittsburgh close out a 3-0 road trip.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists in the win. Rickard Rakell had a goal and an assist, and Brock McGinn also scored for the Penguins.

Malkin made his debut with Pittsburgh on Oct. 18, 2006, scoring in the second period of a 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils. The center helped the Penguins to Stanley Cup titles in 2009, 2016 and 2017.

Malkin's teammates paid tribute to his accomplishment by doing his usual stretching routine during pregame warm-ups.

"We marvel sometimes at what he's able to accomplish on the ice," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "He's one of the more dominant players in our league when he's at his best, and we've seen him at his very best through some of the Stanley Cup runs."

With the goal against the Blackhawks, the 36-year-old Malkin now has a seven-game point streak. He has eight goals and 12 assists in 19 games this season.

It looked as if Malkin was going to try free agency for the first time last summer. But he decided to stay in Pittsburgh for a four-year contract worth $6.1 million annually. Now, he has joined longtime teammate Crosby as the only active players with 1,000 games for the Penguins.

"He's been just such a big part of the Penguins' success that they've had here in his time here," Sullivan said.

As the Penguins head for home, Malkin's career totals now sit at 452 goals and 714 assists in 17 NHL seasons. He also has 67 goals and 113 assists in 177 playoff appearances.

Malkin, who also has competed in the Olympics three times, is the 32nd active player and No. 373 overall with 1,000 career games. He is the eighth Russian-born player to achieve the feat.

In 2020, the International Ice Hockey Federation named Malkin to the all-time Russian National Team.

08:27 Poland says the missile strike on its land appears to be an accident by Ukraine
KYIV, Ukraine — Poland's president said Wednesday that it appears a missile that landed just inside the country's border was from Ukraine in what he called an "unfortunate accident."

"We have no evidence at the moment that it was a rocket launched by Russian forces," President Andrzej Duda said. "However, there are many indications that it was a missile that was used by Ukraine's anti-missile defense."

Two Polish citizens were killed Tuesday when the missile came crashing down in a rural village in eastern Poland, just a few miles from the western border of Ukraine. This happened amid a Russian barrage of missiles fired at cities across Ukraine, with Ukraine responding with its air defense systems.

NATO members discussed the issue in Brussels, and the secretary general of alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said a preliminary analysis pointed to a Ukrainian air defense missile that had been fired at an incoming Russian missile.

"Let me be clear: this is not Ukraine's fault. Russia bears ultimate responsibility as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine," Stoltenberg said.

In Russia, Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said Russian specialists had studied images of the explosion in Poland and concluded rocket fragments were from an S-300 surface-to-air missile system fired by Ukraine.

Konashenkov insisted Russia carried out a wave of what he called "precision" strikes on Ukrainian military and energy infrastructure. He said this included attacks in western Ukraine, but all were 20 miles or more away from Poland's border.

At the G20 summit in Indonesia, President Biden has said the missile was "probably" not fired from Russia. Still, he supported an investigation with Poland and condemned Moscow's latest attacks on Ukraine.

In Ukraine, President Volodomyr Zelenskyy spoke in a brief video on Wednesday morning, wishing citizens a "normal day" after Tuesday's missile barrage. He didn't say whose missile may have exploded in Poland.

This was in contrast to his initial comment Tuesday night, when he said, "This is a Russian missile attack on collective security."

One of his top advisers, Mykhailo Podolyak, said that regardless of whose missile landed in Poland, Russia was responsible.

"Only Russia is responsible for the war in Ukraine and massive missile strikes," he tweeted. "Only Russia is behind the rapidly growing risks for the border countries. No need to look for excuses and postpone key decisions. Time for Europe to close the sky over Ukraine."

Russia fired a barrage of around 100 missiles into Ukraine in just a couple hours
Tuesday afternoon's missiles targeted the Ukraine's electricity grid as it's been doing for the past month.

Ukraine says it shot down about 70 of the incoming missiles, in line with other recent attacks.

But Ukraine's energy systems, which already include daily power outages in many parts of the country, suffered another heavy blow.

In the capital Kyiv, the largest city with around 3 million residents, about half the homes and businesses were without power, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Other large cities were in similar condition, if not worse.

One woman was killed in Kyiv when a missile slammed into her apartment in a residential area near the center of the city. There were no obvious military, government or energy facilities in the area.

It was not clear why the building would have been targeted, or if perhaps a Ukrainian air defense system hit a Russian missile, with the remnants of that Russian missile hitting the building.

Standing in the darkness outside the apartment building, Vladimir Yanachuk said he expected many more Russian attacks, but this was not weakening the resolve of Ukrainians.

"We are not afraid about this. Ukrainians are not afraid about this," he said. "Winter will be hard. But this winter will be hard not only for Ukrainians, but for Russian soldiers too."

As he was speaking in the street, the lights suddenly came back on in surrounding apartment buildings, though not the one that had been hit.

Ukrainians have been rapidly repairing the power outages inflicted by the Russians, but the sheer number of attacks has strained the country's capacity to keep up.

Russia has damaged around 40% of the country's electricity system, according to Ukrainian officials.

Western leaders on high alert after explosion in Poland kills 2

Top Ukrainian leaders are accusing Russia of launching the attack as leaders in the U.S. and Europe remain cautious.

President Joe Biden said Tuesday’s deadly missile strike on Poland’s territory likely wasn’t fired from Russia, as world leaders on three continents raced to find answers about an event that could prove one of the most significant moments in Russia’s nine-month war on Ukraine.

“We are going to figure out exactly what happened,” Biden told reporters after an emergency meeting with other G-7 and NATO leaders on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. He added that “preliminary information” suggests it was “unlikely” that the missile — which landed along Poland’s border with Ukraine — was fired from Russia. Ukrainian officials blamed Moscow for the attack, which killed at least two people.

As details remained scarce, officials were cautious in their statements given the sky-high stakes. A Russian strike on NATO territory could trigger a military response from the U.S. and other NATO members. The hours following the first reports brought a flurry of phone calls between world leaders and emergency meetings over how to respond.

A NATO spokesperson said Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will chair an emergency meeting of alliance ambassadors Wednesday in Brussels to discuss the incident.

Poland’s foreign ministry said earlier Tuesday it had confirmed that the missile was Russian-made and that it had summoned the Russian ambassador “with a demand for an immediate detailed explanation,” according to a statement.

Polish President Andrzej Duda, who spoke with Biden, was less definitive, saying that the missile was “probably” Russian-made, cautioning: “We do not have conclusive evidence at this time of who launched the missile.” Ukraine’s military also uses some Russian-manufactured missiles.

12:30 Game Recap: Cowboys Fall to Packers in OT, 31-28
Has there ever been a bigger Dallas Cowboys nemesis than Aaron Rodgers?

Once again, the Green Bay Packers quarterback proved the villain in leading his team to a come-from-behind, 31-28, overtime victory over the Cowboys, in the process ruining head coach Mike McCarthy's Green Bay homecoming.

After attempting only six passes in the entire first half, completing four, Rodgers went 10 for 16 over the rest of the game for a total of 224 yards overall, three touchdowns and a 146.7 passer rating. Behind his effort, the Packers scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to tie the game and then secured the outcome with a field goal in the extra frame to get the win.

Of course, the real damage was done on the ground by the Packers. Once again, the Dallas defense struggled to stop an opponent's running game as Green Bay churned out 207 rushing yards, including 138 and a score by Aaron Jones.

On offense, Dak Prescott had an up and down day, his two interceptions leading to a pair of Packers touchdowns, although his receivers did him no favors on either miscue. He dropped back 48 times on the day – compared to the team running the ball on 31 snaps – and completed just 58.7 percent of his passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns, a 78.6 rating.

Prescott's primary target on the afternoon was CeeDee Lamb, who posted a career-high 150 receiving yards – the first time a Dallas pass-catcher has topped the century mark this season – while also tying his personal best with two touchdown catches.

When Dallas did run the ball, they were largely successful, finishing with 5.1 yards per carry average and totaling 159 rushing yards in total. With Ezekiel Elliott again sidelined due to injury, Tony Pollard carried the ball a career-high 22 times for 115 rushing yards.

First Quarter

The Packers turned to their ground game early and often, running the ball on 12 of their first 16 plays for 61 yards. But while they racked up the time of possession, holding onto the ball for more than 10 minutes in the first quarter, Green Bay couldn't come away with any points for its effort.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys only managed three-and-outs on each of their first two series, Prescott completing just three of his first seven passes.

Second Quarter

However, all three of those first-quarter connections for the Dallas quarterback came on the team's third possession of the game, as the offense started to find a rhythm. And the Cowboys would keep the drive going as the clocked ticked over into the second frame.

In fact, they kept the momentum going all the way to the end zone with an impressive 17-play, 83-yard effort that ate up 8:21 off the clock. Prescott completed all 10 of his pass attempts during the series for 58 yards, connecting with Lamb five times for 40 of those yards. Lamb also got the scoring honors with a lunge across the goal line for the 3-yard touchdown and an early lead.

The Cowboys were on the doorstep just minutes later, though, when on the third snap of the Packers' next possession, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence strip-sacked Rodgers. That left it to safety Jayron Kearse to fall on the prize and give Dallas the ball at the Green Bay 10-yard line. The forced fumble was the 18th of Lawrence's career, moving him into third all-time in franchise history.

But then Prescott returned the favor. On third down, he threw into a crowded middle of the end zone, his pass picked off by Packers safety Rudy Ford, who returned the interception out to the Green Bay 33-yard line.

Unfortunately, the Packers took advantage of their gift. Facing a third-and-1 at his own 42-yard line, Rodgers found Christian Watson streaking down the right sideline, the wideout outracing Dallas cornerback Anthony Brown for a 58-yard touchdown to tie the game. Shortly thereafter, Brown would head to the locker room with a concussion, done for the day.

And then disaster struck again. The Cowboys had worked their way out to midfield when a miscommunication between Prescott and Lamb resulted in another easy interception for Ford. This time he returned the pick 34 yards to the Dallas 24-yard line, giving the home side great field position with just over two minutes remaining in the half.

Which was plenty of time for the Packers to take advantage of another Cowboys turnover. The running back Jones provided the points, darting up the middle and then racing to the left pylon for the touchdown and a 14-7 lead.

But the half wasn't over just yet. With Prescott and the Cowboys offense getting started at their own 34-yard line with 1:37 left on the clock, the quarterback completed 6 of 7 pass attempts for 55 yards. The last of those was a 5-yard completion to Dalton Schultz to tie the game heading into the break.

Third Quarter

Turnovers continued to be a big story of the game, but this time it was the Cowboys who came out on the positive end. Punting deep in his own territory Bryan Anger boomed a 55-yarder that then saw three Dallas defenders converge on the Packers return man, forcing a fumble. In came Sean McKeon to pounce on the ball to set the Cowboys up at the Green Bay 45-yard line.

Two snaps later, Prescott threw a perfect pass to Lamb for a 30-yard gain, which was then followed two more snaps later by Pollard scampering up the middle 13 yards for the touchdown and the lead.

With the momentum now firmly behind them, the Cowboys made it 21 unanswered points with a seven play, 86-yard drive for yet another score. Malik Davis came in at running back to give Pollard a breather and immediately made the most of his opportunity, carrying the ball three times for 36 yards. But it was a Prescott-to-Lamb 35-yard connection that brought the team's fourth touchdown of the night.

Fourth Quarter

Playing in front of a cold but raucous home crowd, the Packers obviously weren't going to go away quietly. Especially with Rodgers behind center. The quarterback came right back and orchestrated a nine-play, 76-yard drive to make it a one-score game. Rodgers converted a third-and-3 with a 7-yard scramble and then capped off the series with another big touchdown completion to Watson, this time for 39 yards.

But the Rodgers-to-Watson combo wasn't done yet. The pair teamed up for another touchdown just minutes later, this time the score coming thanks to a 7-yard pass that wrapped up a 10-play, 89-yard possession. The accolades may have fell to Rodgers and Watson, but it was the ground attack that chewed up the yardage. Green Bay running backs Jones and AJ Dillon combined for 54 yards off six carries.

Both sides got another chance with the ball in the final two minutes, but neither team could get anywhere, Dallas heading to overtime for the first time this season.

Overtime

The Cowboys won the coin toss and didn't waste time, working their way across midfield to the Packers' 35-yard line. But instead of kicking a lengthy field goal on fourth-and-3, they decided to go for it instead, Prescott's pass attempt under heavy pressure falling incomplete.

And then Rodgers did what Rodgers do, finding wideout Allen Lazard on a slant over the middle, the receiver splitting the defense for a 36-yard gain to the Dallas 20-yard line. A pair of snaps to set up the field goal and out came Mason Crosby, his chip-shot 28-yard attempt splitting the uprights to give the Packers the win.

With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 6-3 on the season and dropped back into third place in the tough NFC East with a trip to the 8-1 Minnesota Vikings up next on the schedule.

14:46 Vintage military aircraft collide mid-air at Dallas air showA Boeing B-17 Flying Fort
A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra collided and crashed at the Wings Over Dallas airshow around 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Authorities responded to the incident at Dallas Executive Airport, Jason Evans with Dallas Fire-Rescue told CNN on Saturday.

The number of casualties in the crash was still not confirmed later on Saturday afternoon, according to Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson.

However, the Allied Pilots Association, the labor union representing American Airlines pilots, identified two pilot retirees and former union members among those killed in the collision.

Former members Terry Barker and Len Root were among the crew members on the B-17 Flying Fortress during the Wings Over Dallas airshow, the APA said in a tweet. The APA is also offering professional counseling services at their headquarters in Fort Worth following the incident.

“Our hearts go out to their families, friends, and colleagues past and present,” their tweet said.

There were more than 40 fire rescue units on scene after the collision, the agency’s active incidents page shows.

In a Saturday afternoon news conference, Hank Coates, president and CEO of the Commemorative Air Force, told reporters the B-17 “normally has a crew of four to five. That was what was on the aircraft,” while the P-63 is a “single-piloted fighter type aircraft.”

“I can tell you that it was normally crewed,” Coates said. “I cannot release the number of people in the manifest or the names on the manifest until I’m released to do so by the NTSB.”

“I can tell you that it was normally crewed,” Coates said. “I cannot release the number of people in the manifest or the names on the manifest until I’m released to do so by the NTSB.”

“Currently we do not have information on the status of the flight crews as emergency responders are working the accident,” a statement from the group said, adding it is working with local authorities and the FAA.

The FAA is currently leading the investigation, which is set to be turned over to the NTSB at approximately 9 p.m. when the NTSB team arrives at the scene, Coates said.

On Saturday evening, the NTSB said it is launching a go-team to investigate the collision. The team is expected to arrive on Sunday, the NTSB said in a tweet.

“Member Michael Graham will serve as spokesperson on scene,” the tweet added.

“The maneuvers that they [the aircraft] were going through were not dynamic at all,” Coates noted. “It was what we call ‘Bombers on Parade’.”

Johnson tweeted later on Saturday no spectators or others on the ground were reported injured, although the debris field from the collision includes the Dallas Executive Airport grounds, Highway 67, and a nearby strip mall.

The event, which was scheduled to run through Sunday, has been canceled, according to the organizer’s website.

Johnson said in a tweet after the crash, “As many of you have now seen, we have had a terrible tragedy in our city today during an airshow. Many details remain unknown or unconfirmed at this time.”

“The videos are heartbreaking. Please, say a prayer for the souls who took to the sky to entertain and educate our families today,” Johnson said in a separate tweet.

Southbound and northbound lanes of the highway were shut down after the incident, the Dallas Police Department said.

“This is not about the aircraft. It’s just not,” Coates said during the news conference. “I can tell you the aircraft are great aircraft, they’re safe. They’re very well-maintained. The pilots are very well-trained. So it’s difficult for me to talk about it, because I know all these people, these are family, and they’re good friends.”

According to Coates, the individuals flying the aircraft in CAF airshows are volunteers and have a strict process of training. Many of them are airline pilots, retired airline pilots, or retired military pilots, Coates said.

Rare vintage aircraft destroyed
The B-17 was part of the collection of the Commemorative Air Force, nicknamed “Texas Raiders,” and had been hangered in Conroe, Texas near Houston. It was one of about 45 complete surviving examples of the model, only nine of which were airworthy.

The P-63 was even rarer. Some 14 examples are known to survive, four of which in the United States were airworthy, including one owned by the Commemorative Air Force.

More than 12,000 B-17s were produced by Boeing, Douglas Aircraft and Lockheed between 1936 and 1945, with nearly 5,000 lost during the war, and most of the rest scrapped by the early 1960s. About 3,300 P-63’s were produced by Bell Aircraft between 1943 and 1945, and were principally used by the Soviet Air Force in World War II.

11:09 Kevin Conroy, who died at 66, was maybe the greatest performer of Batman ever
Actor Kevin Conroy has died. He was 66.

Conroy voiced the Caped Crusader on Batman: The Animated Series from 1992 to 1996, as well as in 15 films, 15 animated series and two dozen video games. To several generation of fans, including mine, he simply...was Batman.

That's because Conroy understood something very fundamental about the character that no other actor to play Batman ever has:

Batman isn't a disguise. Batman is the real guy.

It's Bruce Wayne that's the put-on — the pose, the performance, the face he shows to the world.

Conroy got that. Embodied it, really. But every other actor who's slapped on the bat ears over the years inevitably adopts an overtly theatrical, affected voice when they play Batman.

For most of them, it's a whispery rasp meant to seem super-butch, super-intimidating. It's Clint Eastwood's stoic Man With No Name in black Kevlar.

There have been a couple exceptions. Adam West went big, comically stiff and stentorian: "Careful, chum! Pedestrian safety!"

Christian Bale went even harder, punishing evil-doers (and his vocal folds) with a throaty, if weirdly adenoidal roar: "SWEAR TO ME!" A bullfrog with laryngitis, over here.

But Keaton, Clooney, Kilmer, Affleck and Pattinson all Eastwood-whisper their Bat-dialogue, as if they think they can save Gotham via ASMR.

All of them see Batman as the role to play, and convince themselves they need to create a separate, menacing persona to do so.

Conroy started from a much different place. His Batman was more natural, less forced, less false. He basically used his usual speaking voice. It's something you can just sense immediately, and I think it's one reason so many of us responded to his take as deeply as we did. We could see it: He's not play-acting, he's just acting.

The creators of Batman: The Animated Series have said that's exactly what they were looking for. As they were auditioning people for Batman, actor after actor came in and did the Keaton/Eastwood whisper. It was everything they didn't want their cartoon show to be — it was cartoonish.

But when Conroy slid into the booth, he just read the lines. He took his natural voice down only slightly, and inched closer to the mic.

But it wasn't a pose, it was just him. He was cool. He underplayed. His Batman hangs back, he's wry, even a bit sardonic. Mostly, though, he's natural.

Plus, not for nothing? The guy had real pipes. In an episode of the animated series Justice League Unlimited, Batman is forced to sing a torch song in order to rescue Wonder Woman from the clutches of the evil witch Circe. And Conroy nailed it, while maintaining the character's abiding Batmanishness.

On the other hand, it's Conroy's Bruce Wayne that was a bit. An extended performance. He nudged his voice up a skosh, made it slightly softer. The result is the sound of privilege, of comfort, of a life of ease and unconcern.

What he was actually doing, of course, was talking like all the other privileged jerks Bruce Wayne hangs with. Basically? He was code-switching.
(Is it too much of a stretch to wonder if maybe Conroy was so good at it because he was gay, and perhaps knew a little bit more about code-switching, was more practiced at it, than other actors to play Batman? Okay, it's a stretch. But I'm just saying: It factors, maybe.)

In the years since Batman: The Animated Series ended, he never shied away from the role that would come to define him, as many other actors have done. He continued to voice the character in other shows, movies and games. He was a fixture on the Comic Con circuit, where he loved engaging with fans. He even got to play an elderly version of Bruce Wayne on the CW show Arrow.

But it wasn't his whole life. He trained at Julliard alongside Christopher Reeve, Robin Williams and Frances Conroy. He played Shakespeare, he played Broadway, he had long runs on Another World and Search for Tomorrow. He's survived by his husband, a brother, a sister.

By all accounts, Conroy was a sweet guy who relished his Batman role and his fans, which is why there's so many of us out here feeling a deep pang of loss tonight.

Kevin Conroy, Iconic Batman Voice Actor, Dies at 66

Kevin Conroy, best known for voicing Batman on Warner Bros.’ long-running TV show “Batman: The Animated Series,” has died after a short battle with cancer. He was 66.

“Batman: The Animated Series” originally aired for 85 episodes on Fox Kids from 1992-1995. Conroy’s deep, gravelly Batman voice was widely acclaimed by critics and comic book fans, with many regarding the actor as the definitive Caped Crusader. The series also featured Mark Hamill’s memorable performance as the Joker.

“Kevin was perfection,” Hamill said in a statement. “He was one of my favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”

Conroy was so beloved for his Batman voice role that he continued with the character in various other DC projects, including the “Batman: Arkham” and “Injustice” video games franchises. He also appeared in various DC Universe Animated Original Movies, including “Batman: Gotham Knight” (2008), “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” (2009), “Justice League: Doom” (2012), “Batman: The Killing Joke” (2016) and “Justice League vs. the Fatal Five” (2019), among other films. The 2019 “Justice League” animated film is Conroy’s last credited feature as Batman, and his most recent video game credit as Batman is Warner Bros.’ “MultiVersus” from earlier this year.

“He’s such an iconic character,” Conroy told DC in a 2014 interview. “He’s such a part of the American cultural landscape. It’s an amazing thing to be a part of and to have contributed to.”

In the live-action space, Conroy made his feature film acting debut in 1992 romance drama “Chain of Desire,” written and directed by Temístocles López. He also starred in a recurring role on the NBC soap opera “Another World” and appeared in episodes of classic series such as “Dallas,” “Murphy Brown,” and “Cheers.”

Conroy’s voice acting was not limited to Batman. He also lendt his talents to franchises such as “Scooby-Doo” (he had a voice role on the 2019 series “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?”) and “Masters of the Universe.” In the latter franchise, he appeared on episodes of Netflix’s “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” (playing Mer-Man in 2021) and “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” (playing Hordak earlier this year).

“Warner Bros. Animation is saddened by the loss of our dear friend Kevin Conroy,” WB Animation said in a statement. “His iconic performance of Batman will forever stand among the greatest portrayals of the Dark Knight in any medium. We send our warmest thoughts to his loved ones and join fans around the world in honoring his legacy.”

Conroy most recently wrote “Finding Batman,” which was showcased as part of DC Pride 2022 earlier this year. Conroy was openly gay, making him the only openly gay actor to portray Batman. “Finding Batman” recounted the actor’s experience playing the Caped Crusader while also coming to terms with his own sexuality.

Conroy was born in Nov. 1955 in Westbury, N.Y., and studied acting under John Houseman at The Julliard School alongside the likes of Christopher Reeve, Frances Conroy and Robin Williams. He is survived by his husband Vaughn C. Williams, sister Trisha Conroy and brother Tom Conroy.

Kevin Conroy, longtime voice of animated Batman, dies at 66

Kevin Conroy, the man behind the gravelly bass voice of Batman and who popularized that unmistakable growl that separated Bruce Wayne from the Caped Crusader, has died, according to his representative Gary Miereanu. He was 66.

DC Comics also confirmed the news.

Conroy died Thursday, shortly after he was diagnosed with cancer, Miereanu said.

Conroy’s work in the role is the basis for every iteration of Batman popular culture has seen since. He played Wayne and his superheroic alter ego for years on TV, including on the beloved “Batman: The Animated Series,” and his influence can be heard in the performances of Christian Bale, Robert Pattinson and many more who’ve played the character.

But few actors can say they’ve played Batman quite as often as Conroy: He appeared in more than 400 episodes of TV as the voice – and once, embodiment – of the Dark Knight.

From Broadway to Batman
Before he was Batman, Conroy regularly performed the work of the Bard: A graduate of Julliard’s esteemed acting program, Conroy appeared in adaptations of Shakespearean works from “Hamlet” to “King Lear,” usually at the Old Globe in San Diego. He appeared on Broadway, too, in “Lolita” and “Eastern Standard.”

But it’s undoubtedly the Bat for which Conroy is best known. He played Batman in over 60 productions, according to DC (which shares parent company Warner Bros. Discovery with CNN). His first and most enduring addition to the Batman canon is “Batman: The Animated Series,” which ran from 1992-1996, according to DC. In all, he would play the Bat and Bruce in over 15 different animated series (totaling nearly 400 episodes) and 15 films, including “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.”

He often played against Mark Hamill, who regularly voiced the Joker in animated projects, including the dark and disturbing “Batman: The Killing Joke.” The two had an obvious chemistry in their vocal performances that echoed the tug-of-war Joker and Batman often played.

“Kevin was perfection,” Hamill said in a statement to DC. “For several generations, he has been the definitive Batman. It was one of those perfect scenarios where they got the exact right guy for the exact right part, and the world was better for it.”

But Conroy wasn’t a Batman fan when he began his tenure – all he knew, he said, was Adam West’s campy portrayal from the 1960s. In a 2014 interview, he said he went in blind, one of hundreds of actors auditioning to voice the beloved superhero. To find the character, he turned to his Shakespearean training, saying he saw a bit of Hamlet in Bruce Wayne.

“I gave life to the character. I think I gave passion to the character,” he said in the 2014 interview. “I approached it from a purely acting perspective. A lot of the fans approach it from the whole ‘bible’ of Batman…It’s humbling to me.”

In 2019, Conroy finally appeared as a live-action Batman in a crossover episode of several DC TV properties, including “Arrow,” “Batwoman” and “Supergirl.” As a Bruce Wayne from a different universe, Conroy’s hero was battle-worn, depending on a robotic suit to help him walk after a “lifetime of injuries.”

In Batman, Conroy found courage to come out
Conroy related to his best-known character for another reason, too: Like Bruce Wayne, he also hid his insecurities behind a mask – he wasn’t comfortable coming out as gay due to homophobia within his industry. But being Batman helped him find his inner strength, he wrote in a short comic for DC.

“I often marveled at how appropriate it was that I should land this role. As a gay boy growing up in the ’50s and ‘60s, in a devoutly Catholic family, I’d grown adept at concealing parts of myself,” Conroy wrote in the comic, according to gaming outlet Kotaku.

Conroy later married Vaughn C. Williams, who survives him, according to DC.

Batman brought joy to others in times of need, too: A native New Yorker, Conroy felt called after the events of September 11 to work at a food relief station for first responders. One of the men he served recognized him, but a colleague didn’t believe that Conroy really was the voice of Batman. So Conroy performed one of his most famous lines, in that signature bass: “I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batman!”

And with that, he proved he was, indeed, Batman and delighted first responders.

He’s a beloved Batman, fans say
Fans and fellow voice actors mourned Conroy’s loss online.

Clancy Brown, the voice of Mr. Crabs on “Spongebob Squarepants” and Lex Luthor in several animated series, called Conroy his “hero.” Liam O’Brien, famous for voicing anime series like “Naruto” and several video games, said he’s not sure he’d be a voice actor if he hadn’t been “so inspired by Kevin Conroy.”

Tara Strong, known for her voice work in “Rugrats” and “Loki” and worked with Conroy on “The New Batman Adventures,” shared a photo of Conroy lying on her lap with a smile. “He IS #Batman,” she wrote.

Hamill concurred. Many famous men have taken up Batman’s mantle – Bale, Pattinson, Ben Affleck, George Clooney among them – but few have gotten to explore all of the superhero’s emotions and traumas over several decades. For many fans of Batman, Conroy was the first iteration of the Dark Knight they ever knew and loved.

“He will always be my Batman,” Hamill said.

During the early days of the pandemic, Conroy shared a clip of himself reciting Shakespeare’s Sonnet 30 from his garden. A bittersweet reflection on lost loved ones and time passed, it ends on a hopeful note, all of which Conroy conveyed in his 45-second, off-the-cuff clip.

“But if the while I think on thee, dear friend/All losses are restor’d, and sorrows end.”

18:29 CMA Awards 2022: Complete list of winners, best and worst moments
Country music superstar Luke Combs has broken many records over his astonishingly fast ascent in Nashville, but this summer, he proved he can sell out stadiums — and voters awarded him accordingly. For the second consecutive year, Combs won entertainer of the year at the Country Music Association Awards, the most prestigious prize at the genre’s biggest awards show.

“I never know what to say,” said Combs, who also took home the trophy for album of the year for his most recent record, “Growin’ Up.” “I want to thank country music for making my dreams come true. … There is nobody in this category that doesn’t deserve to be standing up here.”

Combs triumphed over Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Morgan Wallen — saving the industry from headlines about how Wallen, known to the mainstream audience as the singer who was caught on TMZ video saying the n-word in February 2020, had once again been rewarded on his redemption tour.

Any other potential controversies were also avoided; not a word was uttered about the recent, widely covered social media incident involving Jason Aldean and Maren Morris, after Aldean’s wife, the influencer Brittany, posted an Instagram video that Morris criticized as transphobic. Though Morris said earlier she might skip the show, they were all in attendance. (Both Aldean and Morris were nominated for one award and did not win in their respective categories.)

And although co-host Luke Bryan released a defensive statement last week after he received criticism for inviting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) onstage at a recent concert, no one touched on politics or current events — save for Bryan and his co-host, Peyton Manning, joking that if Bryan ran for president his slogan could be “A candidate who will never plead the Fifth, but he will drink the fifth.”

Newcomers Cody Johnson and Lainey Wilson tied Combs with two wins; Johnson triumphed with his impossibly catchy hit “’Til You Can’t” in the single and music video categories, while Wilson won new artist and female vocalist. Old Dominion and Brothers Osborne continued their march as industry favorites as group and duo, respectively, and Jordan Davis’s recent smash “Buy Dirt” (featuring Bryan, his labelmate) won song of the year.

A full list of winners and nominees are below — here are some of the highlights from the night.

The Loretta Lynn tributes

The death of 90-year-old Loretta Lynn shook many members of the country music world last month, as they mourned the groundbreaking legend who broke down doors for countless women. The show kicked off with footage of Lynn accepting CMA’s entertainer of the year in 1972, the first time a woman ever won the prize, followed by a tribute from Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Reba McEntire.

The trio sang a sparkling medley of some of Lynn’s greatest hits, including “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)” from Underwood, “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” from Lambert, “You’re Looking at Country” from McEntire and, of course, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” sung by all three. While it would have been fitting for a woman to finally win entertainer of the year for the first time since Taylor Swift landed the trophy in 2011, alas, Underwood and Lambert went home empty-handed.

Cole Swindell and Jo Dee Messina and ’90s country

It was the moment ’90s country obsessives have been waiting for: The audience started screaming as Jo Dee Messina joined Cole Swindell onstage for an invigorating version of Swindell’s “She Had Me At Heads Carolina,” a reimagining of Messina’s 1996 smash, “Heads Carolina, Tails California.”

It’s hard to overstate how enormous this hit has been for Swindell, who has had several big singles in his career but saw this song explode over the summer and fall, sitting for five weeks at No. 1 on the radio charts — as Nashville knows, ’90s nostalgia is real and overwhelming. Swindell and Messina finally released a remix of the song together this week, timed perfectly to their CMAs performance.

Chris Stapleton and Patty Loveless, together again

The two Kentucky natives performed together at a recent Kentucky benefit concert for flood relief and thrilled the CMAs audience when they joined again for Loveless’s “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.” Stapleton’s booming voice always sends country fans into a frenzy, and aided by Loveless’s stellar vocals, the crowd was practically on its feet before the song was even over.

The Alan Jackson tribute

There is nothing country award shows love more than showing how much contemporary stars adore the hits from legendary artists, and the camera showcased Kelsea Ballerini, Breland, Ashley McBryde, Combs and many more singing along to Alan Jackson’s classics during his tribute.

Jackson, the recipient of this year’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, took the stage for “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” but a slew of others performed their own versions of Jackson’s hits, including Underwood (“Remember When”) and Dierks Bentley, Jon Pardi and Wilson all together for “Chattahoochee,” “Drive (For Daddy Gene)” and “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow.”

Brothers Osborne and the War and Treaty

Brothers Osborne continued the tradition of electrifying award show performances with a cover of “It’s Only Rock n’ Roll (But I Like It)” by the Rolling Stones — a track on an upcoming country music tribute album called “Stoned Cold Country” — along with the War and Treaty, husband and wife duo Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter, whose powerful vocals added to the riveting spectacle. The Trotters shimmied around the stage as the brothers stayed anchored on guitars, and the camera panned to crowd members dancing like they were having the time of their lives, from T.J. Osborne’s boyfriend to Morgane Stapleton.

Hardy and Wilson’s murder ballad

Country music award shows these days are known more for glitter than chilling murder ballads, but Hardy and Wilson were determined to change that during a captivating performance of a track that makes you go, “Wait, did he just say what I think he said?” In this case, yes, Hardy sings from the perspective of a man who kills Wilson’s abuser and then goes to jail. And to make sure no one missed the meaning, Hardy — standing in front of a truck — drew his finger across his throat after he sang the line about being in jail: “It ain’t paradise, that’s true / But it’s a whole hell of a lot better than the place I sent him to.”

“I want the people who have been abused to hear the song,” Wilson told the Associated Press. “I want them to feel like they are not alone. But I want the abusers to hear it. I want them to be haunted.”

Kelsea Ballerini’s drinking anthem with a twist

Ballerini has weathered criticism her whole career that she’s “too pop,” but her latest album has some of the most classic country songs of the year — including the upbeat anthem “You’re Drunk, Go Home,” her collaboration with Carly Pearce and Kelly “always seems like she’s on the verge of crossing over to country music” Clarkson. All three singers scornfully informed the drunk man in the song that they were not interested in his pickup lines, and as they belted out the lyrics, for some reason, a brief shower of fire rained down behind them.

Thomas Rhett and Katy Perry’s surprise chemistry

A duet between Thomas Rhett and pop star Katy Perry — decked out in a fringe dress and cowboy hat for the ultimate country authenticity — seems like it should not work … at all. And yet? They were both on their A-game for the collaboration of the wistful “Where We Started,” about a couple’s younger days. Rhett has admitted he was highly doubtful Perry would ever agree to be on the song, and Perry has confessed she had no idea who he was and had to ask Bryan, her fellow “American Idol” judge. But this time, their vocals sounded even stronger than they did when they sang the track together on the “Idol” finale in the spring.

The monologue jokes

Once again, the CMAs continue to struggle to find a hosting combination that can match the presence of Brad Paisley and Underwood, who sharpened their comedic skills over a decade-plus of helming the show. Bryan hosted solo last year and this time was joined by former NFL superstar Manning, who is not only pals with country stars thanks to his University of Tennessee days, but also hosts his own show with his brother Eli on ESPN, owned by ABC’s parent company, Disney.

The monologue jokes mainly consisted of the two making fun of each other (Bryan: “I walked around Nashville trying to find a cowboy hat to fit your head”; Manning: “I thought you really needed a co-host”). But for those who like dragging Eli, there were plenty of digs throughout the night: Manning said he keeps telling Bryan he’s like a brother to him but “he doesn’t realize that’s not a compliment” and later asked the Brothers Osborne if they, like him, only work together because their mom makes them.

The lack of a Naomi Judd tribute

There have been so many country legends who have died in the past year it would have been hard to fit all the tributes in, but the lack of attention given to the iconic Naomi Judd, who died in August, was puzzling. Brothers Osborne took on the task themselves when Wynonna, Naomi’s daughter and duo partner, arrived to announce duo of the year. The brothers insisted she stay onstage with them during their speech. “We’ve learned so much from you and your family,” T.J. Osborne said.

Jeff Cook, co-founder of the band Alabama who died this week, got a shout-out from Bryan, and Old Dominion briefly elaborated on Alabama’s influence during their win for group of the year. “There’s nothing like being in a band,” lead singer Matthew Ramsey said. “I can’t imagine losing one of you guys.”

The uneven balance of televised female winners, again

The country industry has publicly struggled with correcting its gender imbalance, and, once again, it took nearly two hours into the three-hour show before a female singer gave an acceptance speech. Eight out of the 11 prizes went to male acts — Wilson won female vocalist of the year and new artist of the year, while Pearce and McBryde’s win for musical event (for their duet “Never Wanted to Be That Girl”) was awarded earlier off-camera.

20:34 Democrat John Fetterman beats Trump-backed Dr. Oz in Pennsylvania Senate race
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman is headed to the U.S. Senate following a campaign full of personal health debates and a fight for control of one of the nation's battleground states. He defeated Trump-endorsed celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz.

The Senate seat was vacated by retiring GOP Sen. Pat Toomey, creating the first open Senate seat in Pennsylvania in a dozen years. Fetterman's victory helps the Democrats as they look to secure bigger margins on Capitol Hill.

Currently, Democrats hold a narrow majority in the House, and the Senate is split at 50-50, with Vice President Harris holding a tie-breaking vote.

Fetterman's health came into question after he suffered a stroke days before the primary; he needed to undergo a pacemaker implant procedure. For two months he did not return to the campaign trail and only did video appearances.

Fetterman did go back on the road and used closed captioning for some interviews.

Oz, who rose to prominence in appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, announced his bid for the Senate last year based on opposition to the federal government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oz has promoted hydroxychloroquine as a COVID treatment, has previously been criticized for other health recommendations, and has testified at a Senate hearing on deceptive advertising for diet supplements.

Fetterman fends off Oz in Pennsylvania Senate showdown

"I never expected that we were going to turn these red counties blue, but we did what we had to do," he said.

Lt. Gov. John Fetterman has defeated Republican candidate Mehmet Oz, flipping the seat currently held by retiring GOP Sen. Pat Toomey into Democratic hands.

Fetterman’s victory is a significant win for Democrats, representing potentially their only Senate pick up of the cycle. With Democratic incumbents facing tough races in other battleground states, winning Pennsylvania bolsters the party’s hopes to hold on to their no-room-for-error 50-50 majority for another two years.

“I am so humbled,” Fetterman said to supporters after the race was called. “We held the line. I never expected that we were going to turn these red counties blue, but we did what we had to do.”

Pennsylvania was viewed by both parties as the frontline for their strategies for winning the chamber. Though Oz was outspent and outraised by Fetterman, the Senate race topped out as the most expensive this cycle so far, with outside money pouring in. (The Georgia race could still ultimately claim the title if it goes to a December runoff.)

Fetterman beat Rep. Conor Lamb (D-Pa.) in their party’s primary, a win for progressives. And he led in polls against Oz for most of the year, but the race entered nailbiter territory in the final weeks as Oz appeared to close the gap thanks to a calvary of GOP groups spent heavily against him.

Fetterman’s campaign took a multipronged approach to trying to beat Oz, painting the wealthy celebrity doctor as out-of-touch and homing in on his longtime New Jersey residency, while also following national Democrats using the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade reversal to try to push Oz’s position on abortion into the spotlight.

Oz, and his allies, meanwhile spent the final stretch of the campaign focused on crime — reflecting a message that the party deployed in congressional races across the country. An ad from MAGA Inc., a super PAC founded by Donald Trump allies, accused Fetterman of wanting “ruthless killers, muggers and rapists back on our streets.”

In a sign of the times, their campaign frequently played out online in a war of memes, among them a viral video of Oz wandering through a grocery store buying ingredients for crudité. (Oz later called it a joke.)

But the Democrat’s campaign was thrown a curveball when Fetterman suffered a stroke in May, returning to the trail in August. Shortly after he did, Oz’s campaign put out statements making an issue out of Fetterman’s diet and accusing him of being unable to debate.

Oz appeared to distance himself from the attacks, telling NBC News that he wouldn’t use that rhetoric about a patient. And Fetterman moved to try to address public concerns about his health, releasing an ad on the issue and medical reports.

The two ultimately had their first, and only, debate on Oct. 25, where Fetterman visibly stumbled with answers to some questions in a moment that left some Democrats wincing.

Fetterman in his victory speech repeated a line he had deployed over the last two weeks in response to questions about his debate performance.

“This campaign has always been about fighting for everyone who’s ever been gotten knocked down and ever gotten back up,” he said, to applause.

Pennsylvania was one of six open seats Republicans were playing defense on this year as Minority Leader Mitch McConnell saw a stable of his members, and some of his most reliable allies, head for the exits.

21:39 Takeoff: Migos rapper shot dead in Houston at 28
US rapper Takeoff, from the chart-topping group Migos, has been shot dead at the age of 28 in Houston, Texas.

The star was killed at a bowling alley where he was playing dice with his uncle and bandmate, Quavo, on Tuesday.

A representative for the musician, real name Kirshnik Khari Ball, confirmed the news to the Associated Press.

Migos were one of the most influential groups of their generation, pioneering a style of rapping in choppy, staccato triplets known as the "Migos flow".

The band, who split earlier this year, scored several international hits including Bad and Boujee, Versace and Walk It Talk It.

'Tell me this ain't true' - follow reaction to Takeoff's death
The shooting took place at about 02:30 local time (07:30 GMT) on a balcony outside the 810 Billiards and Bowling Alley.

Police said 40 to 50 guests had been at a private party when someone opened fire. Security guards in the area heard the shots but did not see who fired the gun.

When they arrived, officers said they found a large crowd and a man in his twenties with a gunshot wound to the head or neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Takeoff was identified as the victim by media outlets including TMZ, Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

However, police told the BBC they would not officially confirm an identity until the victim's family had been notified.

Reports that Quavo was also injured in the incident have not been confirmed. Police said two other victims were driven to hospital in private vehicles.

Tributes to Takeoff have been posted on social media.

"Forever a legend, I can't believe this," wrote Lil Pump on Instagram; while Ja Rule posted an emoji of a dove and sent "love to friends and family".

Music executive Cole Bennett tweeted that "nothing makes sense anymore. nothing at all"; and Juice Wayne posted a verse about Takeoff, saying "it will never make sense",

"Takeoff [was] probably the most unproblematic rapper," added actress Masika Kalysha. "He don't bother nobody and stay out the way."

Pioneers
Migos - made up of Takeoff, Offset and Quavo - grew up together in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and came to represent the state's capital, Atlanta, arguably the spiritual home of trap music.

Takeoff said music had offered the band, who were all related, an escape route from poverty.

"Growing up, I was trying to make it in music. I was grinding, which is just what I loved doing. I didn't have nothing else to do," he told The Fader.

"In my spare time, I'd record myself. Find a beat... just making something and creating for me. I'd wait for Quavo to get back from football practice and I'd play my songs for him."

Originally called Polo Club, the band made their debut as Migos in 2010, and scored their first hit with Versace, which received a remix from Drake, in 2013.

'The Beatles of this generation'
Their ascent halted briefly in 2015 when Offset was sent to jail following a police raid on the group's tour bus after a show at Georgia State University.

Later that year, the trio issued the mixtape Back to the Bando, which included the hit song Look at My Dab - which popularised the dabbing dance trend that was later picked up by athletes and even politicians.

They went mainstream in 2016 with Bad and Boujee, a viral hit whose quotable lyrics ("rain drop, drop top") spawned multiple memes.

A slow-burning success, it topped the US charts two months after it was released, thanks partly to an enthusiastic endorsement from actor-rapper Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino.

"I think they [Migos] are the Beatles of this generation," he said during a speech at the Golden Globe Awards in 2017. "That song, Bad and Boujee, is just fly."

Takeoff's non-appearance on that single caused a minor controversy among fans - but he brushed it off, claiming he was simply unavailable for the recording session.

Propelled by its success, the band's second album, Culture, debuted at number one in the US. The same year, the group collaborated with Calvin Harris on Slide - their only UK top 10 hit.

Their follow-up album, Culture II, featured production by Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, as well as guest spots from Nicki Minaj, 21 Savage, Cardi B and Drake. Another US number one, it spawned the platinum hits MotorSport, Stir Fry, Walk It Talk It and Narcos.

Around the same time, Offset began dating Cardi B, with whom he now has two children, Kulture and Wave.

Takeoff was the youngest member of the band and often the quietest in public.

"He analyse a lot, that's why I think his raps be so strong," Offset told Rolling Stone in 2018. "He's just powerful."

The musician released a solo album, The Last Rocket, in 2018 before Migos reunited to record Culture III in 2021.

However, the band split up earlier this year after a disagreement with Offset.

"We stand on real deal loyalty, and sometimes that... ain't displayed," Quavo told the Big Facts podcast earlier this year. "This ain't got nothing to do with no label, no paperwork, no QC, nothing. This got something to do with the three brothers."

Takeoff and Quavo continued as a duo, releasing an album, Only Built For Infinity Links, which reached number seven in the US charts last month.

Shortly before Takeoff's death, the pair had released a Halloween-themed video for their single Messy.

20:42 Game Recap: Eagles 35, Steelers 13
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia as the Eagles hosted intrastate foe, the Pittsburgh Steelers, at Lincoln Financial Field for the first time since 2016.

• The Eagles started on defense – Haason Reddick built momentum quickly sacking Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett at the Pittsburgh 18 for a loss of 8 yards within the first two minutes of the game. The Steelers punted it on the next play.

• Jalen Hurts capitalized on the following possession, completing a 39-yard deep middle pass to A.J. Brown, capping of a 9-play, 68-yard drive.

•The Steelers followed suit in a 13-play 75-yard drive – Eagles' Brandon Graham received a delay of game penalty on fourth-and-goal and Pittsburgh decided to go for it after lining up for a field goal, leading the Steelers to their first points of the game. Chase Claypool threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Derek Watt on 4th-and-goal with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter.

•The score marked the Steelers' very first touchdown EVER at Lincoln Financial Field. The Steelers left Philadelphia without reaching the end zone in their previous two visits to the stadium in 2008 and 2016, losing both games.

• Another Brown and Hurts connection! The Eagles kicked off the second quarter with a touchdown, taking the lead again. Hurts found Brown for a 27-yard pass into the end zone with 12:53 remaining in the half.

• Darius Slay nearly had his fourth interception of the season with 7:47 remaining – his reaction showed that he really wanted to take it away. Nonetheless, he still prevented any production from Pickett's pass intended for Diontae Johnson.

• ANOTHER ONE! Brown was on FIRE in the first half – Hurts targeted him for a third touchdown. This time, he caught a 29-yard pass to complete a 3-play, 60-yard drive. The refs charged him with a taunting penalty – to which Lincoln Financial Field responded with an eruption of booing. The Eagles extended their lead 21-7.

• Jordan Davis went down during a play in the final four minutes of the first half. He needed assistance exiting the field; the team's trainers guided him to the blue medical tent on the sideline before he went inside on a cart.

• The Steelers' newly signed kicker Nick Sciba scored his first NFL field goal from 38 yards, adding three points to the board for Pittsburgh. Sciba was signed to the team's practice squad on Saturday just hours before kickoff; kicker Chris Boswell was sidelined for the Sunday matinee due to a groin injury.

• Have a day, A.J.! Brown finished the half with an impressive 5 catches for 113 yards and three receiving touchdowns. He's the first Eagle in the last 15 years to record three receiving touchdowns, each 25+ yards.

• The Eagles started the third quarter with the ball ... and another touchdown! A fourth scoring pass from Hurts glided 34 yards through the air, this time into the hands of Zach Pascal. The Eagles increased their lead to 28-10 in a speedy 2:07, 5-play, 75-yard drive.

• The team announced an injury update for Jordan Davis, who was carted to the locker room in the first half. He was ruled out for the remainder of the game due to an ankle injury.

• Sciba scored again. The Eagles' defense forced the Steelers to attempt a field goal after holding them from the end zone through their 6:58 15-play, 64-yard drive. Steelers added three, but still trailed 28-13.

• Eagles defense dominated the start of the fourth quarter! Javon Hargrave strip-sacked Kenny Pickett at the Philadelphia 45 for a loss of 9 yards; Avonte Maddox recovered it at the 46-yard line. Soon enough, that Pickett turnover led to another Philadelphia score! Hurts passed short middle to Brown for a 43-yard play to the Pittsburgh 11-yard line. On the next play, Miles Sanders ran it in for a touchdown. Philadelphia increased their lead yet again with 12:41 remaining in the game, 35-13.

• The Eagles' defense is relentless -- C.J. Gardner-Johnson recorded the team's fifth sack of the day.

• Quarterback Gardner Minshew saw his first game action of the season, entering the game in the final ten minutes. Hurts left the game with 285 yards and four touchdown passes. Most of the Eagles starters exited the game -- they'll have a quick week, playing again on Thursday night against the Texans.

• Gardner-Johnson grab! He intercepted a Pickett pass intended for Pat Freiermuth, advancing it 14-yards to the Philadelphia 12-yard line with 4:27 left in the game.

• The Eagles advance to 7-0, winning the keystone showdown at Lincoln Financial Field. Jalen Hurts is the first quarterback in franchise history to win in 10 consecutive starts.

Labriola on the loss to the Eagles

Let's start with this: the Philadelphia Eagles are good. Very good. A legitimate Super Bowl contender. Right now, the best team in the NFC and quite possibly the best team in the NFL.

With that out of the way, the Steelers' performance in their 35-13 loss to the Eagles on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field was embarrassing, the second time in the last four games where that description is appropriate. Some of it was confounding, some of it was annoying, and all of it was frustrating.

After back-to-back games where the Steelers defense seemed to be coming around, at least to the degree where it was stingy in allowing points, the bottom dropped out. One week after doing a representative job against the Miami RPOs triggered by Tua Tagovailoa, the Eagles' version operated by Jalen Hurts did what it wanted when it wanted. One week after keeping a lid on the combination of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, the Steelers were barely a speedbump for A.J. Brown and Zach Pascal, both of whom averaged over 25 yards per catch.

The offense was back to doing, and not doing, the things that has made it one of the worst performing units from a statistical standpoint in the league so far in 2022. After the Eagles won the toss and elected to defer, the Steelers got the ball first. Their opening series then followed the same disturbing pattern – run (by Najee Harris for no gain), run (by Kenny Pickett to escape the pass rush for 1 yard), pass (attempt by Pickett only to be sacked), punt. It was the fourth time in their eight regular season games that the Steelers went three-and-out on their opening possession.

Their play along the lines of scrimmage in Philadelphia can be summarized by two plays, one on each of the game's first two series. On first-and-10 from the 25-yard line on the game's first play, Harris had to fight to get back to the line of scrimmage for no gain. On third-and-1 from their 41-yard line on the Eagles' third play of their opening possession, Miles Sanders ran for 5 yards before encountering any Steelers defenders on the way to a 7-yard gain and a drive-extending first down.

Then the element that led to the 38-3 rout in Buffalo reared its ugly head again. Remember, Bills receiver Gabe Davis, known primarily as a deep threat, caught touchdown passes of 98 and 62 yards. In Philadelphia, A.J. Brown did his thing to the tune of 39, 29, and 27-yard touchdown catches, plus a 43-yard reception that set up an 11-yard touchdown run by Sanders that completed the scoring. The Steelers failed miserably to keep a lid on Brown, and the resulting explosion obliterated whatever chance they might have had.

"We're not positioning ourselves to win games. We didn't today," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "Some fundamental things are falling short. We got to keep a lid on it. If you don't keep a lid on it in the NFL, you don't give yourself a chance to play. We didn't do that. I thought it was a domino effect from there. I thought our eyes weren't in the right place defensively. It's capable of happening when you're not keeping a lid on it. You got to keep a lid on it."

The Eagles had no such difficulty with the Steelers offense, because Philadelphia held a significant edge in plays that gained 20-plus yards, 7-2. Or to make the point a different way, the Eagles scored touchdowns on drives of 60 yards in three plays, 75 yards in five plays, and 54 yards in two plays; the Steelers touchdown and two field goals came of drives of 84 yards in 13 plays, 55 yards on 12 plays, and 74 yards on 15 plays.

"When you're on the field for 14 plays, you're leaving yourself open to make mistakes whether that's physically, mentally," said Kenny Pickett. "Some things happen like that, so we need more explosive plays. We had opportunities today and didn't connect. Penalties again hurt us. When you're running 14 plays, 16 plays, something (bad) is going to happen sooner or later. Guys get tired up front. It causes problems. It's a double-edged sword. It's good to stay on the field and control the football and chew some clock. We have to finish with points. If we're not getting points, it's really not doing us any good."

And Bill Cowher, the former Steelers coach and now an NFL analyst for CBS, doesn't believe the team is doing Pickett any favors with the way it's handling his rookie season. Pickett's fourth NFL start was Sunday in Philadelphia, and in those starts, he has attempted 52, 18 (in slightly more than a half before leaving with a concussion), 44, and 38 passes. That's 152 pass attempts in 3.5 NFL games, which is a lot of exposure to sacks/hits from the defense, and Cowher also doesn't believe the 7 interceptions Pickett has thrown in his starts (10 total in his rookie season) are doing anything for his mental well-being either.

"You're transitioning into a new quarterback, OK?" said Cowher during the CBS studio show on Sunday. "Right now, I get worried about his confidence, because I've seen this happen to other quarterbacks.

"Take the ball out of his hands. Don't ask him to do as much as you're asking him to do. I know we have these receivers and everything else. It's not about the receivers … You have to somehow shorten the game with this quarterback, and it goes back to running the ball. I'd put him back under center. Don't subject him to being back there (in the shotgun) and getting sacked six times.

"You're 2-6. Understand it's a period of transition. What's in the best interest of developing this quarterback who is your quarterback of the future without destroying his confidence?"

Based on how Pickett has handled things since being a No. 1 pick in late April, it seems unlikely his psyche is overly fragile, but Cowher's approach nevertheless has validity solely for the reduction of the physical pounding on the rookie quarterback's body. But trying to sustain offense under those parameters would require a reliance on a running attack that came into the game ranked 27th in the NFL and then managed 144 yards in Philadelphia, but a good bit of that total either came in garbage time or on scrambles by Pickett and reverses to wide receivers.

Najee Harris, a first-round pick just 18 months ago, has become a picker and a dancer in his second NFL season to the extent that undrafted rookie Jaylen Warren looks and produces more like a feature back should. "I'm not a big east-to-west guy. I've been taught to just get downhill," said Warren. "I'm not a big dance guy. That's what I've been taught."

Exactly, so teach Harris, or refresh those lessons. I spent hours and hours on the practice fields at Saint Vincent College summer after summer hearing former running backs coach Dick Hoak yelling, "hit it up in there" to veterans and draft picks and free agents alike. Harris is a hard worker who wants to be great, and it defies logic that he wouldn't respond to a constant reinforcing of that message.

As Cowher said, the Steelers are 2-6 and in a period of transition. Their bye is the weekend of Nov. 6-7 with their next game vs. New Orleans on Nov. 13 at Acrisure Stadium. The Collective Bargaining Agreement mandates players be given four consecutive days off during the bye, so there won't be an extended opportunity to hammer away at the issues dogging the team. But there should be some accounting of where they are and what they need to do to turn what remains of this season into a positive.

"Either you learn and are accountable, or you're not going to play," said Cam Heyward. "We're going into (the bye), and we've all been given chances to see that. If you can't do it, you won't play. That goes for everybody. I'm not singling one guy out. We've all got to be accountable, myself included. As a leader, I've got to take most of the blame. It's easy to point (fingers). It's better to look yourself in the mirror and say, 'I've got to get better.' So, I'm going to use this time to truly do that."

Those who follow Heyward's lead will be the ones worth keeping. As for the rest, well, as Cowher said, this is a period of transition.

Eagles' Jalen Hurts connects with A.J. Brown on three first-half touchdown passes

PHILADELPHIA -- It's almost Halloween, so it's only fitting that "Swole Batman" made a major impression for the Eagles on Sunday.

Receiver A.J. Brown, who got the nickname from cornerback Darius Slay early in the season, showed off his super hero skills with three first-half touchdown passes against the Pittsburgh Steelers, helping Philly to a 21-7 lead.

On the first TD connection, it looked like Jalen Hurts' heave could be intercepted by standout safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, but Brown came zooming in and elevated to snatch his third receiving touchdown of the season.

The third score was similar to the second, with Hurts again hitting Brown down the right side on a 29-yard play.

Entering the game, Brown had not recorded a 100-yard receiving game since Week 1 against the Detroit Lions -- a five-game streak that was tied for the second longest of his career. The third touchdown catch gave him numbers of five catches for 113 yards and 3 TDs on the day.

Brown is the fifth Eagles player over the past 20 seasons with 3-plus receiving touchdowns in a game, per ESPN Stats & Information research, joining Terrell Owens (twice in 2004), Brian Westbrook (2004), Kevin Curtis (2007) and Riley Cooper (2013).

Hurts now has three passing touchdowns of 20-plus air yards on the day, only the second time since ESPN began tracking air yards in 2006 that an Eagles quarterback had three such passing touchdowns (Nick Foles in 2013). This also marks the first time an Eagles receiver has had three receiving touchdowns of 20-plus air yards in a game since 2006.

19:20 Powerball jackpot rises to $1 billion next week, as no one wins again
DES MOINES, Iowa — The Powerball jackpot keeps getting larger because players keep losing.

It happened again Saturday night as no one matched all six numbers and won the estimated $825 million grand prize. That means the next drawing Monday night will be for a massive $1 billion, according to a statement by Powerball.

The winning numbers Saturday night were: white balls 19, 31, 40, 46, 57 and the red power ball 23.

The increased jackpot will be the second-largest in U.S. history. The biggest prize was a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot won by three ticketholders in 2016.

Although the advertised top prize will be an estimated $1 billion, that is for winners who receive their winnings through an annuity paid over 29 years. Winners almost always opt for cash, which for Monday's drawing will be an estimated $497.3 million.

The $825 million jackpot for Saturday's draw increased from $800 million on Friday as a result of strong ticket sales, Powerball said.

Players who missed out on the latest grand prize in the 30-year-old lottery shouldn't immediately toss away their receipts.

A Florida ticket holder matched all five white balls in Saturday's drawing and increased the prize to $2 million by including the game's "Power Play" feature. Six tickets won a $1 million prize by matching five white balls, including two in California, two in Michigan, one in Maryland and one in Texas.

Another 17 tickets won a $150,000 prize while there were 80 winners of $50,000 each. More than 3.8 million tickets won cash prizes totaling above $38 million, Powerball said.

It has been nearly three months since anyone hit all six numbers and took the lottery's top prize, with a $206.9 million jackpot win in Pennsylvania on Aug. 3. Thanks to Powerball's long odds of one in 292.2 million, there have now been 37 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Powerball lottery jackpot increases to $1 billion

Who wants to be a billionaire?

No winning tickets were drawn for the massive Powerball jackpot worth $825 million on Saturday night.

Saturday’s winning numbers were 19, 31, 40, 46, 57, and Powerball 23.

The pot for Monday’s drawing increased to an estimated historic mark of $1 billion and a cash value of $497.3 million.

It would be one of the largest Powerball jackpots in the history of the game, second only to the $1.586 billion drawing in 2016, which is also a record for the largest jackpot in the lottery.

Although there were no grand prize winners, four tickets won $1 million after matching all five white numbers. Those tickets were sold in California, Texas, Maryland, and Michigan.

Another winning ticket worth $2 million was sold in Florida after matching the five white numbers and playing the Power Play feature.

Saturday evening’s drawing marked the 37th consecutive Powerball with no grand prize winner dating back to August 3 when a Pennsylvania ticket won the $206.9 million prize.

In all, there were 3.8 million tickets that won cash prizes totaling more than $38 million including 80 $50,000 winners and 17 tickets worth $150,000.

Another 17 tickets won a $150,000 prize while there were 80 winners of $50,000 each. More than 3.8 million tickets won cash prizes totaling above $38 million, Powerball said.

It has been nearly three months since anyone hit all six numbers and took the lottery’s top prize, with a $206.9 million jackpot win in Pennsylvania on Aug. 3. Thanks to Powerball’s long odds of one in 292.2 million, there have now been 37 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

14:11 LIVE UPDATES - Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Baltimore Ravens
Live updates from Raymond James Stadium as the Buccaneers look to bounce back.

The last couple of weeks have been an absolute roller coaster for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-4). The team got off to a 2-0 start, winning road games in Dallas and New Orleans. Since then, the Buccaneers have lost four of their past five games - including two shocking defeats to Pittsburgh and Carolina. The Buccaneers are quickly spiraling out of control but continue to lead the NFC South ahead of a Thursday night football matchup with the Baltimore Ravens (4-3).

The Ravens are dealing with some issues of their own but have the ability to break out at any point under the guidance of star quarterback Lamar Jackson. Through seven games, he's thrown 13 touchdowns to six interceptions while ranking fifth in the league in rushing with 510 yards and two scores. It won't be easy for the Buccaneers with defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, cornerback Carlton Davis, cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting, safety Antoine Winfield Jr, and safety Logan Ryan out of the lineup.

BucsGameday will be providing live updates throughout the evening on BucsGameday.com and our Twitter.

PREGAME:
— Wide receiver Russell Gage, tight end Cameron Brate, guard Luke Goedeke, Murphy-Bunting, Davis, Winfield Jr, and Hicks are inactive for Tampa Bay. That means third-string quarterback Kyle Trask will be active in the regular season for the first time in his career.

06:28 Fetterman and Oz face off in highly anticipated debate
By MARC LEVY and STEVE PEOPLES Associated Press

Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman wouldn’t commit to releasing his full medical records during a highly anticipated debate against Republican Mehmet Oz on Tuesday, speaking haltingly throughout the hourlong event more than five months after experiencing a stroke.

Fetterman, Pennsylvania’s 53-year-old lieutenant governor, has acknowledged that he “almost died” after suffering a stroke in May. On Tuesday night, he addressed what he called the “elephant in the room.”

“I had a stroke. He’s never let me forget that,” Fetterman said of his Republican opponent. “And I might miss some words during this debate, mush two words together, but it knocked me down and I’m going to keep coming back up.”

He also quickly tried to go on offense by attacking Oz’s “gigantic mansions” and his integrity.

“It’s the Oz rule: he’s on TV and he’s lying,” Fetterman said.

Oz, a celebrity heart surgeon, ignored his opponent’s health throughout the debate, though he has hammered Fetterman on the issue repeatedly during the campaign. On Tuesday night, Oz attacked Fetterman’s policies on crime, saying he is “trying to get as many murderers out of jail as possible.”

“These radical positions extend beyond crime,” Oz charged. He later added, “His extreme positions have made him untenable.”

Fetterman insisted he is prepared for the demands of the Senate as he continues to recover from the stroke. Independent experts consulted by The Associated Press said he appears to be recovering remarkably well. He used closed-captioning during the debate to help him process the words he hears.

Stroke rehabilitation specialist Dr. Sonia Sheth, who watched the debate, called Fetterman an inspiration to stroke survivors.

“In my opinion, he did very well,” said Sheth of Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in suburban Chicago. “He had his stroke less than one year ago and will continue to recover over the next year. He had some errors in his responses, but overall he was able to formulate fluent, thoughtful answers.”

Problems with auditory processing do not mean someone also has cognitive problems, the experts agreed. The brain’s language network is different from regions involved in decision making and critical thinking.

While debates have rarely swayed elections in the modern era, the intense national interest in the primetime affair — particularly in Fetterman’s performance — suggested this debate could prove decisive in an election central to the Democrats’ urgent fight to retain their Senate majority.

For Democrats, there is no better pickup opportunity in the U.S. than the race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey in a state Biden narrowly carried in 2020.

For much of the year, it looked as if Fetterman was the clear favorite, especially as Republicans waged a nasty nomination battle that left the GOP divided and bitter. But as Election Day nears, the race has tightened. And now, just two weeks before the final votes are cast, even the White House is privately concerned that Fetterman’s candidacy is at risk.

Voting is already well underway across the state. As of Tuesday, 639,000 votes had already been cast.

Fetterman’s speech challenges were apparent throughout the night. He often struggled to complete sentences.

When pressed to explain his shifting position on fracking, his answer was particularly awkward.

“I do support fracking. And I don’t, I don’t. I support fracking, and I stand and I do support fracking,” he said.

At another point, the moderator seemed to cut off Fetterman as he struggled to finish an answer defending Biden’s student loan debt forgiveness programs. He also stumbled before finishing a key attack line: “We need to make sure that Dr. Oz and Republicans believe in cutting Medicare and Social Security …”

The Pennsylvania Senate hopefuls faced each other inside a Harrisburg television studio. No audience was allowed, and the the debate host, Nexstar Media, declined to allow an AP photographer access to the event.

The meeting was the first and only major statewide debate this year in Pennsylvania, since Democrat Josh Shapiro and Republican Doug Mastriano couldn’t reach an agreement on terms for a gubernatorial debate.

Fetterman is a star in progressive politics nationwide, having developed a loyal following thanks in part to his blunt working-class appeal, extraordinary height, tattoos and unapologetic progressive policies. On Tuesday, the 6-foot-9-inch Democrat swapped his trademark hoodie and shorts for a dark suit and tie.

But Fetterman’s health has emerged as a central issue over the election’s final weeks, even as candidates elsewhere clash over issues like abortion, crime and inflation.

Oz had pushed for more than a half-dozen debates, suggesting that Fetterman’s unwillingness to agree to more than one is because the stroke had debilitated him. Fetterman insisted that one debate is typical — although two is more customary — and that Oz’s focus on debates was a cynical ploy to lie about his health.

Democrats noted that the televised debate setting likely would have favored Oz even without questions about the stroke.

Oz is a longtime television personality who hosted “The Dr. Oz Show” weekdays for 13 seasons after getting his start as a regular guest on Oprah Winfrey’s show in 2004. Fetterman, by contrast, is a less practiced public speaker who is introverted by nature.

“This was always going to be an away game for John Fetterman,” said Mustafa Rashed, a Democratic political consultant based in Philadelphia.

Fetterman asked for, and was granted, a closed-captioning system for the debate that displayed in writing everything said on a large screen behind the moderators.

The Fetterman campaign said in a memo ahead of the debate that the closed captioning would be “typed out by human beings in real time, on live TV,” warning that it could lead to time delays, transcription errors and miscommunication. “It is impossible to control and unavoidable,” the memo said.

Abortion was a major dividing line during the debate.

16:26 Creed III trailer Michael B. Jordan breaks it down
The legend of Rocky Balboa has lived on, but not necessarily through Creed. Rather, Adonis has a reputation of his own now, and that’s clearly shown in the latest installment of the spin-off movie series, ‘Creed III.’

The recently dropped trailer from MGM and United Artists puts the highlight on Michael B Jordan’s “Donnie” Creed, back again on the screen but this time, in the ring with Jonathan Majors.

In the beginning of the trailer, Creed is certainly on top—“I spent the last seven years of my life living out my wildest dreams,” the champion boxer says. Flashes of himself on the cover of Forbes, and winning fights are some of the memories shown on screen, all while his wife Bianca (Tessa Thompson), who also happens to have her own triumphant path in music, and daughter Amara, (Mila Davis-Kent) are right by his side.

“Bianca. Rocky. My dad. I stood on their shoulders,” Creed continues in the first sneak peek of the highly anticipated film.

Not long after, we find out the connection between Major’s character, Dame, and the title boxer we’ve seen—Dame has spent the last 18 years in prison, and Creed knew him as a young kid. He was even there when he was arrested, and it becomes obvious they are connected on a deeper level than just old acquaintances.

Growing up, the duo both boxed—and Major’s protagonist starts to come out at this point—with him claiming that “he was always better” than Donnie. At first, the two seem copacetic, and Creed offers to help Dame. But things escalate.

“Imagine spending half your life in a cell watching somebody else live your life,” we see the newly freed Dame yell as the trailer goes on. He then makes it clear to Creed that he’s “coming for everything.”

And he certainly tries. As you may have anticipated, the trailer leads to a training sequence and then to the ring—it’s the formula that has kept the franchise alive, and it’s the one audiences can’t get enough of.

What is different about this movie is the absence of Sylvester Stallone, but also, the addition of Michael B. Jordan as the director. It’s always been something that has been on the young actor’s mind according to him, but it took ‘Creed’ director Ryan Coogler giving the advice to “jump in the deep end and go for it” that really cemented this latest venture for Jordan.

“I finally got to this place in my career where I wanted to tell a story and not just be in front of the camera, not just execute somebody else’s vision. Having a character that I’ve played twice before — it’s been seven, eight years living with this guy — so to be able to tell the story of where I believe Adonis is at,” the actor explained to reporters at a global press conference. “And also at 35 years old, I had a lot to say, as a young Black man, just my life experiences and how I could actually share a piece of myself with the world through these characters and through the story.”

And with every great hero story comes the protagonistic driving force of the story. We’ve seen some of the greater foes come out from both the ‘Rocky’ and ‘Creed’ series with Drago—and his son for that matter, Clubber Lang and ‘Pretty’ Ricky Conlan closing in on ranks. However with Dame in ‘Creed III,’ it brings back the deeper rivalry that the whole franchise is known for.

Jordan says it himself that Major’s character is a pivotal person and a pillar in Adonis’ life, and that connection gets addressed in this film both in the ring and outside of it.

“For me, as a director, to have that running mate and that scene partner made all the difference in the world,” Jordan continues. “The world is finding out daily how incredible this man is and the work that he does. It’s finally getting the props that it’s due. And Jonathan was incredible, man, he showed up every day ready. Ready to go to war. Ready to work.”

17:17 Chargers rally, escape with 19-16 overtime win over Broncos

INGLEWOOD, California -- The Los Angeles Chargers' sideline erupted in jubilation following two special plays by a history-plagued special teams unit.

With 4:58 remaining in overtime, the Bolts recovered a muffed punt on the Denver Broncos' 28-yard line. Then, four plays later, kicker Dustin Hopkins -- playing through a right hamstring injury -- knocked down a 39-yard field goal to give the Chargers a 19-16 win at SoFi Stadium.

With the win, the Bolts improve to 4-2 -- keeping them in the thick of the race for the AFC West, while proving that they can come up clutch.

Last Sunday, the Chargers were gifted a victory from the Cleveland Browns when kicker Cade York missed a potential game-winning 54-yard field goal.

On Monday Night Football, the Chargers left no doubt that they could win on their terms.

Los Angeles Chargers
QB breakdown: Justin Herbert and the Bolts' offense struggled to find a rhythm against a fast and physical defense. Herbert completed 37 of 57 passes for 238 yards with an interception.

Through regulation, Herbert averaged 2.2 air yards on his completions, below his previous career low of 2.7.

Cornerback Pat Surtain II effectively eliminated go-to target wide receiver Mike Williams, who finished with two catches for 17 yards -- including a clutch 9-yard reception in overtime to set up the game-winning field goal.

Herbert's lone touchdown drive came in the first quarter, when he put together a seven-play, 84-yard drive that resulted in Austin Ekeler rushing 6 yards for a score to put the Bolts on the board, 10-7.

In the fourth quarter, on first-and-10 from his own 17-yard line, Herbert had a pass intercepted that was intended for Gerald Everett -- his second interception of the season when targeting his new tight end.

Herbert, who was sacked twice, is continuing to play through fractured rib cartilage, about which he said earlier this week, "I think it's getting better. I think time is probably the best help."

Troubling trend: Cornerback J.C. Jackson not playing to standard after signing a five-year, $82.5 million contract in free agency.

Jackson could only watch, on an apparent blown assignment, as tight end Greg Dulcich sprinted by for a 39-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter to give the Broncos a 10-0 lead. A fifth-year pro, Jackson played four seasons in New England, where he led the NFL in interceptions (25) since 2018.

Jackson awaits his first pick as a Charger, and it's unclear exactly what has caused his slow start to the season, whether it's learning a new scheme or coming back from ankle surgery performed in late August.

Buy on a breakout performance: After spending most of the 2021 season on the sideline following ankle surgery, edge rusher Khalil Mack is proving in his ninth NFL season that he has plenty remaining in the tank.

Mack acknowledged entering Monday night that it is no fun chasing around Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, yet he kept constant pressure on Wilson, sacking him once, and also batted down a pass.

Mack ranks second in the NFL, tied with six other players, with six sacks. The Chargers sacked Wilson four times. -- Lindsey Thiry

Underrated statistic to know: Herbert threw zero touchdowns on 57 passes Monday. It's the second time this season a player threw at least 57 passes without a touchdown (Kyler Murray).

Next game: vs. Seahawks (4:25 p.m. ET, Sunday)

Denver Broncos
One of Denver Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett's biggest items on the to-do list when he took the job was to improve the Broncos' dismal performance in the AFC West, especially on the road in the division.

The Broncos stumbled into SoFi Stadium Monday night 2-11 in their past 13 division games dating back to the start of the 2020 season, 0-7 on the road with a loss in Las Vegas already on this season's docket. So, add another on the growing pile as their offense shut it down in the second half -- again -- and rookie Montrell Washington muffed a punt at the Broncos' 28-yard line with 4 minutes, 46 seconds to play in overtime to help set up a 19-16 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

It all had a familiar ring for the Broncos, who had a 10-0 lead in the first quarter before their still-struggling offense essentially called it a night. A team that has scored all of five points in the third quarter this season -- two of those on a safety by the defense earlier this year -- was shut out in the third again as the Broncos had only 19 yards of offense.

The Chargers simply pushed back against a battered Broncos offensive line for much of the second half -- left tackle Garett Bolles will miss the rest of the season after he fractured his right fibula in the loss to the Indianapolis Colts -- to keep Russell Wilson out of sync.

The Denver defense slugged it out enough to get to overtime, but all the work the Broncos said they did on offense during the 11 days between their Thursday night loss to the Colts and Monday's to the Chargers certainly did not show.

Troubling trend: Rookie cornerback Damarri Mathis got a preview of what the remainder of the season could look like for him. Mathis, who is in the lineup due to the season-ending knee injury to Ronald Darby, was targeted by Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on the game's first play from scrimmage -- Mathis was called for pass interference -- and the Chargers didn't let up.

Mathis had three pass interference penalties in the first half alone that accounted for 81 yards, four in the game. Whenever Herbert faced even a minimal stress situation he sent the ball Mathis' way. The rookie better get used to it and respond because the moment any of the Broncos' future opponents look at what the Chargers did Monday night, they'll believe they can make it work as well.

Mathis showed some resiliency with a key fourth-down pass breakup to open the fourth quarter, but the play was yet another indicator that it will not be a relaxing ride for him in the coming weeks.

Biggest hole in the game plan: Hackett has spent plenty of time since he got the job talking about how important the run game is, and will be, in the team's offense.

And then, as the team struggles along the learning curve, when it has the ball the run game is ornamental at best. Granted, the season-ending injury Javonte Williams suffered in the loss to the Raiders will impact the Broncos' plan, but they ran the ball just seven times in the first half versus the Chargers, and one of those was a Wilson scramble.

This has led at times to short possessions in which the Broncos use up just over a minute on an ill-timed three-and-out before sending their defense back on the field. And the team's continued struggles on first down -- Denver faced second-and-18, second-and-12 and second-and-9 in the first half alone -- have pushed the Broncos away from a run game they need to be bigger part of what they're doing.

All you have to see is on third-and-1, in their first possession of overtime, Wilson was in the shotgun as he threw an incompletion under heavy pressure from a Chargers pass rush with no reason to slow down.

QB breakdown: Wilson hit his first 10 pass attempts Monday night and looked far more comfortable overall. But without the benefit of much play-action in the Broncos' offense and amid an ongoing disconnect with wide receiver Jerry Jeudy that seems to appear with regularity, Wilson completed only three of his next 11 passes.

Champions League refereeing controversy: Why Fikayo Tomori shouldn't have seen red against Chelsea, and more

How Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele escaped a red card and the rest of the week's biggest calls

The football world is calling the 17th minute red card to Milan's Fikayo Tomori for denying obvious goal scoring opportunity (DOGSO) and subsequent penalty a travesty, lamenting the injustice of the call. Cries of the "game's is gone," ringing out from fans. But, the real crux of the issue is not whether the punishment fit the crime, but rather whether there was a crime at all.  What the debate should be is whether the upper arm body contact that occurred is in itself a foul because everything depends on how its answered. There is no way withing the rules to advocate for a penalty and yellow card, that can't occur, so the question is was the incident a foul at all. Let's take a look at the call and the rest of the major decisions from the Champions League Matchday 4 (you can catch all the Champions League action on Paramount+).

Going to the law, any DOGSO infraction that occurred by holding, pulling or pushing has always been a penalty and red card. That was true even before a recent change to the law was implemented. Before the 2016-17 season the International Footballing Association Board, the organization responsible for the rules, made a very notable law change altering sending off offenses inside the penalty area for DOGSO to avoid what was considered a "triple-punishment". Before the change, a player who committed a DOGSO offense in the penalty area was automatically red-carded, was handed a one game suspension, as well as giving away a penalty.

The law change was modified to the following:

"Where a player commits an offense against an opponent within their own penalty areas which denis an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offense was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off."

That modified DOGSO in the penalty area to be yellow card only if there is an attempt to play the ball. Officials are asked to liberally apply "attempt tp play the ball" in application. However, DOGSO red card for triple-punishment was purposely kept for plays that where not clear attempts to play the ball but purely tactical and not football actions.

The law is clear in this situation, if the referee determines (1) a foul has been committed in the penalty area, (2) that it satisfied the requirements to be a denying obvious goal scoring opportunity, and (3) the foul was not an "attempt to play the ball" then the offending player must be sent off.

Given the way the rule is written, the debate truly is whether a foul occurred in the first place by Tomori against Mount. Is there actual physical contact by the arm on Mount? Yes. Does this level of contact rise to a foul that warrants a penalty and red card in the context of this play? The answer here is no. Both players are battling for not only possession, but also for spatial advantage when initially getting to the ball. There is no other defender who can intervene in the play aside from the goalkeeper once Tomori is beaten, but when you don't slow down the play and take still shots but rather watch it at full speed, you can see Mount fights through the contact and makes a solid attempt at getting to the ball before the keeper is able to block it. This kind of play, at this speed, and at this level, is a common, expected level of football in terms of physical contact meaning that officials frequently would not call this an infraction.

Is there debate to be had on this play? Yes! It's clearly a borderline situation, which is another reason why it is not appropriate for VAR to recommend it down for a penalty or for overturn of a penalty. It is not a clear and obvious error. In fact, I can fully appreciate the referee in real time believing there is enough physical contact and holding by Tomori to call it a foul, penalty and red card but on review, ironically best angles are the ones from goal line which the referee would never have a view of, and those are the ones that confirm the contact is just not enough leading to the preferred decision of no foul in the first place. However, Tomori does take a risk by extending his arm not only once but twice and as a result the decision can go either way. So the call itself is a close one but it's important to remember that if it is a foul, it also must be penalty, red card and one game suspension.

The Final Decision: No foul but also no VAR recommendation to overturn the penalty kick and red card.

Another DOGSO decision from Tottenham vs. Frankfurt
While we are playing in DOGSO world, a brief refresher on the four considerations of when a foul rises to a denying obvious goal scoring opportunity (DOGSO). In a previous column on DOGSO, we looked at how referee's must account for four considerations at the moment the foul occurs to come to the right decision:

Take the four DOGSO considerations and we have two really good examples to work through from MD4 that occurred in the Tottenahm Hotspur v. Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the 59th minute a Frankfurt defender, Tuta, commits a holding offense against Tottenham's Heung-Min Son after Son once again burns him on the dribble. Tuta was issued a yellow card for stopping a promising attack, but since it was his second yellow card (he had just received one against Son only five minutes before for a tactical foul after Son beat him), he was issued a red as well and dismissed from the game.

Given that the result was a red either way, practically it didn't impact the match but the talking point here is why this wasn't a direct red card for DOGSO since it felt like Tuta was the last defender and Son would have been heading towards goal unopposed. Using the four criteria needed to convert the stoping a promising attack into a DOGSO (and since the infraction occurred outside the penalty area it could only be a red card if determined DOGSO) you will see one of the criteria's is clearly not met - location and number of defenders and because of that, officials will punish for only stoping a promising attack which is a yellow card offense only.

It is critical to note that the moment you determine whether an infraction is a DOGSO is the moment the actual foul occurs. I like to look at it like taking a "snapshot" of the moment from both the center referee viewpoint and the assistant referee viewpoint and with each piece of the puzzle in mind it is then important for the officials to communicate to get these decisions correct. Typically, the center official has direction of play and distance to goal and the assistant referee helps with the location and number of defenders because of their advantageous position to look across the line and see where everyone is at the time the foul occurs. Both officials can assist one another when it comes to likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball, and the assistant referee's communication becomes even more important when there is a heavy touch and center referee cannot by angle appreciate whether the player can get to the ball before the goalkeeper.

This is the snapshot at the time Tuta commits the foul against Son. As you can see we have two more defenders who are located near and "behind" the ball in the sense they can reasonably defend that ball if Son had not been fouled. So we only have stopping a promising attack and a (second) yellow card for Tuta.

Here is the snapshot for the 90th minute foul in the same game as Frankfurt's Hrvoje Smolcic extends a leg to prevent the attacker from getting to the ball. At time of the snapshot we see everything we need. 1. At the time the foul is committed, there are no other defenders who can reasonably defend the ball before the attacker strikes on goal, aside from the keeper. 2. The ball is very close to the goal. 3. The direction is direct although slightly to the right of the goal, not enough to substantively affect direction of a top level attacker from getting a shot off. 4. Attacker has full possession on the dribble, it is not a heavy touch where the likelihood of getting to the ball is outweighed because the keeper will get there first. And, importantly, it is in the penalty area and since officials are advised to liberally apply "attempt to play the ball" we would consider this an attempt (even though the ball is past) and admonish it with a yellow card and penalty for DOGSO.

Deliberate handling offense by Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez

In the 11th minute of Manchester City's match against Copenhagen we see a beautiful strike by City's Rodri hit the back of the net, only for it to result with an accepted VAR recommendation to disqualify the beautiful goal because of a deliberate handling offense by City's Riyad Mahrez in the attacking phase of play ("APP") before the goal was scored.

Im not sure if the football world finds this is controversial because they don't believe it is deliberate handling or just because they are upset to see a beauty taken back by the correct decision, but sadly this one is pretty clear

Final Decision: VAR Recommendation is correct to disqualify the goal for deliberate handling.

There is no denying it touched the hand of Mahrez, and as I explained in the column after Matchday 1, this is not an infraction of "accidental handling by an attacker" leading up to the goal by a teammate (which was eliminated from the laws in 2021-22). As a general rule of thumb (pun intended), not every contact to the hand is handling but Mahrez's is is for the following reasons:

Mahrez is watching the ball the entire time and is aware that the ball is about to land in front of him

Mahrez does not make any attempt to move his arm "away" from the ball but instead keeps it outstretched in front of him and softens the drop of the ball.

In not removing his arm but allowing it to "cradle" and bring the ball down, he gains control of it completely with his arm/hand.

In the context of this play, and taking into account the football principle that "football expects players to be penalized for handling if they gain possession/control from the ball and gain a major advantage (score goal or goal scoring opportunity)," this is the correct decision to interpret the play as a deliberate handling offense.

Notably, as mentioned, this is not a determination that this is accidental handling leading to a goal by a teammate why it was disqualified. Further, this can be reviewed because it occurred in the APP which is the reviewable window for VAR to look at any incidents that would negate a goal. VAR did well to recommend this to the official, even though it took a beautiful goal away.

Two direct red cards missed

Suprisingly, Matchday 4 brought with it two direct red cards missed by both the referee and the VAR, one in the Bayer Leverkusen vs. Porto match and another in Barcelona's draw against Inter Milan. There's a little more wiggle room for VAR in the Porto play to but it should have still been recommended and in the Barcelona game the incident 100% should have been recommended as a red card.

There were a lot of interesting calls and VAR needs throughout the Bayer Leverkusen v Porto game, however, this one stands out amongst them all. In the 32nd minute, Porto's Hoao Mario Neto Lopez, commits a late, desperate lunge with speed and force directly into Leverkursen's #10 Demirbay ankle/shin. How there wasn't an outcry by everyone on the pitch, I am not sure, as I've seen far less result into chaos

Final Decision: VAR recommendation for red card for serious foul play.

Why did the VAR not recommend it down then? Upon close replay, the VAR would have been focused on the point of contact. Maybe that is what convinced him that it wasn't a clear and obvious error to recommend, because upon slow play at half speed you see Mario's front tip of his studs/boot appear to glance off, or not go directly through the shin. Also, there may not have been an angle to allow the VAR to feel confident how much contact was actually made on Demirbay. However, to focus solely on this one item looses football understanding completely on the context of this play and why it is a clear and obvious error to not have given a red card.

This one must be looked at on both the up-close replay and the regular game camera. In the up-close it helps one identify what part of the player's foot makes contact - at or above the ankle - and the mode of contact, the studs of Mario's cleat.

11:04 Tennessee vs. Alabama: Numbers behind the big Volunteers win
The No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide and No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers completed an SEC clash for the ages in one of the biggest games of the 2022 college football season.

With a 52-49 win, Tennessee snapped a 15-game losing streak against Alabama courtesy of a game-winning 40-yard field goal by Chase McGrath.

The Vols' 52 points were the most allowed by Alabama since a 1907 game against Sewanee (54).

It was also just the third game across Nick Saban's collegiate and professional head coaching career where his team allowed at least 52 points -- and the first instance since a 1999 game between Michigan State and then-No. 20 Purdue.

Fans near and far from the college football world weighed in on the historic matchup.

The final score is far from the only staggering number the Vols put up. Here are some other notable numbers from the rivalry game:

1: Tennessee started the game on an impressive note as the first team to score a touchdown on its opening drive against Alabama this season.

4: The Volunteers continued to find the end zone on their next two drives. This was just the fourth time in the Nick Saban era at Alabama where the defense allowed a touchdown on its opponent's first three offensive possessions.

Tennessee has beat four ranked opponents this season (No. 17 Pitt, No. 20 Florida, No. 25 LSU, No.3 Alabama).

The last team to have four ranked wins within their first six games was LSU in 2011 and only five other teams have accomplished this feat in the AP Poll era.

5: It was the Jalin Hyatt and Hendon Hooker show at Neyland Stadium. The duo connected for five touchdowns. Hyatt became the first player to have at least 200 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns in a game since former Crimson Tide wideout DeVonta Smith in 2019.

Hooker is the first player with multiple games of 350 passing yards and five passing touchdowns in program history.

The offensive firepower gave legendary former Tennessee signal caller Peyton Manning more than enough reasons to light a victory cigar.

28: Entering Saturday, Alabama's season-high for points allowed in a game this season was 26 against Arkansas. Tennessee eclipsed that total in the first half alone with 28 points, its most in any game versus Alabama since 2007.

136: This was the 136th top-10 matchup in SEC history, but only one of the previous 135 featured 100 combined points. It ties the 2013 game where No. 3 Auburn beat No. 5 Missouri, 52-49, as the highest scoring top-10 matchup in SEC history.

Tennessee beats Alabama football on last-second field goal for first series win since 2006

Tennessee beats Alabama football on last-second field goal for first series win since 2006. Nick Kelly. The Tuscaloosa News.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. − Alabama football looked like it had the game clinched.

Kool-Aid McKinstry was running toward the end zone, and even if he didn't make it, the Crimson Tide appeared to be in control. Alabama had a lead in the final minutes Saturday and was about to have the football deep in Tennessee Vols territory.

But wait. There was a flag. Pass interference on Alabama.

The play was coming back. Shortly after, Tennessee tied the game.

The Crimson Tide, whether it was early in the game or toward the end, just couldn't get out of its own way.

Tennessee took advantage of a missed field goal late, and the Vols kicked the game-winner at the buzzer to beat Alabama 52-49 at Neyland Stadium. Tennessee snapped a 15-year losing streak to Alabama.

Here are observations and takeaways from the game between No. 1 Alabama (6-1, 3-1 SEC) and No. 8 Tennessee (6-0, 3-0).

Defense struggles against Hendon Hooker and company, outside of a few turnovers

Alabama was well aware of the tempo with which the Vols offense operates. It was talked about repeatedly throughout the week. Knowing about it often didn’t matter, though.

The Crimson Tide struggled to slow Tennessee’s fast-paced offense. Blink, and the Vols had already run several plays. That quick tempo prevented Alabama from affecting Hooker, and the Vols offense rolled early. Tennessee had already scored three touchdowns by the end of the first quarter.

Hooker and the receivers continued to find soft spots in coverage, and Alabama struggled to find ways to disrupt a usually clean pocket for Hooker. That led to plenty of offensive success for the Vols.

Alabama eventually stopped the bleeding and had a few impressive plays. There were a couple of fourth-down stops and DeMarcco Hellams became the first defender to intercept Hooker in about 11 months. Dallas Turner also recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Still, the defense couldn’t stop giving up plays late, in particular to Jalin Hyatt. He cooked the Crimson Tide secondary for 207 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Then Tennessee drove down the field in the final minute, ending with the game-winning kick.

Discipline problems and mistakes put Alabama behind early

It almost became silly how Alabama was finding ways to get penalized on one first-quarter drive.

First, there was holding on the kickoff return. Tennessee had just taken a 14-7 lead and the Crimson Tide needed to respond. On the first offensive play, another holding penalty. Before Alabama could run another play, the Crimson Tide had a false start. The drive only got worse from there. Mix the penalties with a Traeshon Holden drop, and James Burnip soon had to punt out of Alabama’s end zone.

The Crimson Tide reached seven penalties for the game by Burnips’ punt. More than five minutes still remained in the first quarter. In the first half alone, Alabama had nine penalties for 71 yards.

Those got in the way of an Alabama team that already had enough of a problem facing a talented Tennessee team in a hostile Neyland Stadium.

As far as mistakes go, none were more glaring than Quandarrius Robinson’s punt return mistake when he tried to pick up a loose ball and Tennessee recovered. Shortly after the turnover, the Vols took a 28-10 lead with 11:41 left in the first half.

Bryce Young’s shoulder is more than fine

Young was injured recently? He certainly didn’t look like a player fresh off a shoulder injury.

After missing the previous week's game vs. Texas A&M, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner was back to his old tricks as Alabama's quarterback: making defenders miss, extending plays, throwing footballs into tight windows.

His third-quarter drive to help Alabama take its first lead was a masterpiece. Young led a 12-play, 75-yard march made possible by his Houdini-like moves and remarkable throws. The pass to tight end Cameron Latu along the right sideline was nothing short of impressive.

Jahmyr Gibbs continues to be a gamer

Outside of Young, the next player you would want to have the football in an important moment is Gibbs.

He froze defenders at times. He also proved clutch when it came to scoring. He had three rushing touchdowns by the end of the third quarter.

In another 100-plus-yard rushing day for Gibbs, he proved to be the best player on the Alabama offense not-named Young.

15:29 Actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Harry Potter's Hagrid, dies at age 72
Robbie Coltrane, the baby-faced comedian and character actor whose hundreds of roles included a crime-solving psychologist on the TV series "Cracker" and the gentle half-giant Hagrid in the "Harry Potter" movies, has died. He was 72.

Coltrane's agent Belinda Wright said he died Friday at a hospital in his native Scotland, and but did not immediately offer other details. She called him "forensically intelligent" and "brilliantly witty" in just one of many tributes made to him.

"Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, who decades ago had said Coltrane was her first choice to play Hagrid, tweeted Friday that he was "an incredible talent, a complete one off."

"I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him and laugh my head off with him," she wrote.

Born Anthony Robert McMillan in Rutherglen, Scotland, Coltrane was in his early 20s when he began pursuing an acting career and renamed himself in honor of jazz musician John Coltrane.

He already had a notable screen career, with credits including "Mona Lisa," "Nuns on the Run" and Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of "Henry V" when he broke through on his own as a hard-bitten detective in "Cracker," the 1990s TV series for which he won best actor at the British Academy Television Awards three years running.

He went on to appear in all eight "Harry Potter" movies as the young wizard's mentor and had a wide variety of other parts, including a Russian crime boss in the James Bond thrillers "GoldenEye" and "The World is Not Enough" and Pip's guardian Mr. Jaggers in a 2012 adaptation of Dickens' "Great Expectations." More recently, he received rave reviews for playing a beloved TV star who may harbor a dark secret in the 2016 miniseries "National Treasure."

On Friday, his "Nuns on the Run" co-star Eric Idle tweeted that he had been talking about Coltrane, "wondering where he was," when he learned of his death.

"Such a bright and brilliant man. A consummate actor, an extraordinarily funny comedian and an amazing actor. He was also a very good friend," Idle wrote.

Wright said Coltrane is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his ex-wife Rhona Gemmell and his children Spencer and Alice.

Robbie Coltrane, actor who played the beloved Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, dies at 72

The Scottish thespian was "forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty," his agent said.

Venerable Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, best known as the dragon-loving half-giant Hagrid from the "Harry Potter" film franchise, died on Friday, his managers said.

A representative with the actor's agency, William Morris Endeavor, confirmed his passing to NBC News, saying Coltrane had been ill and wasn't active recently.

"We are hugely saddened to hear of the passing of the magnificent Robbie Coltrane who played Hagrid with such kindness, heart and humour in the Harry Potter films," the “Harry Potter” film franchise said in statement. "He was a wonderful actor, a friend to all and he will be deeply missed."

Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the seven installments of the franchise, fondly recalled all the moments he spent with Coltrane, who always kept it light even if it was dark outside.

"Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set," Radcliffe said in statement.

"I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up."

Radcliffe added: “I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

And fellow “Harry Potter” actor James Phelps, who played one of the Weasely twins, recalled being a fresh-faced 14-year-old, nervous on first day on the set in September 2000.

16:47 Bears fall to Commanders in low-scoring affair | Game Recap
The Bears couldn't overcome a multitude of mistakes Thursday night, including a pair of costly turnovers and no points on three red-zone possessions, in a 12-7 loss to the Commanders at Soldier Field.

The Bears (2-4) had a chance to take the lead in the final minute of the game following a missed 48-yard field goal by Commanders kicker Joey Slye that gave the offense the ball at their 38 with 1:49 to go. Quarterback Justin Fields scrambled 39 yards down the left side of the field to reach Washington's 5. But on fourth-and-goal from the 4, Fields threw to receiver Darnell Mooney, who caught it short of the goal line, sealing the win for the Commanders (2-4).

"Our defense did an outstanding job of rising up there when we didn't get that fourth down and forcing a missed field goal," coach Matt Eberflus said. "And then we drove it all the way down the length of the field to give ourselves a chance to win it at the end there, and then didn't punch it in."

While the Bears didn't score until the third quarter, they had two red-zone opportunities in the first half. On the team's second drive of the game, Fields was picked off at the Washington 5 on a pass intended for tight end Cole Kmet. The following Bears possession resulted in a turnover on downs after Fields overthrew tight end Ryan Griffin in the end zone on third-and-goal from the 1 and running back Khalil Herbert was stopped short on fourth-and-goal.

"Finish, that's it," Fields said of the missed red-zone opportunities. "That's the jist of the whole game: finish. We didn't finish. Missed a wide-open touchdown pass, didn't finish. Fourth-and-1, handed the ball off to [Herbert], couldn't finish it. Last play, couldn't finish it. There's multiple plays in that game that we could've made to change the whole game, but the summary of it all is we didn't finish. It doesn't matter if you drive all the way down to the 5-, 1-yard line and don't score. It's the same thing as a three-and-out and you punt inside the 10. It's the same thing. So just the biggest thing is just finishing."

Washington's go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter came after receiver Velus Jones Jr. muffed a punt at the Bears' 6. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. had a 1-yard TD run to put the Commanders up 12-7.

Fields completed 14 of 27 passes for 190 yards while rushing for 88 yards. Running backs Herbert and David Montgomery added 75 and 67 yards on the ground, respectively.

Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz completed 12 of 22 passes for 99 yards; Robinson totaled 60 rushing yards on 17 carries and a score.

On the Bears' second possession, the offense was driving downfield as Fields connected with Kmet for 15 yards then receiver Dante Pettis for 19 yards. But after reaching the Washington 5, Fields' pass intended for Kmet was tipped by end Efe Obada then intercepted by tackle Jonathan Allen.

The Bears defense didn't let the Commanders capitalize as linebacker Roquan Smith sacked Wentz on third down for a loss of 5 yards. After the Bears got the ball back at their own 30, Herbert evaded defenders and broke free for a 64-yard run to reach the Washington 6.

While the Bears had their best opportunity to score, Fields overthrew Griffin in the end zone and third down, then Herbert was stopped on the next play.

The game's first score didn't come until 46 seconds before halftime when Slye made a 38-yard field goal to put the Commanders up 3-0. Washington's biggest play in the drive was a 16-yard run by J.D. McKissic, but cornerbacks Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson were also flagged for pass interference, allowing the Commanders to stay on the field and reach Bears territory.

A 40-yard touchdown pass from Fields to Pettis gave the Bears a 7-3 lead with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter. On second-and-9, Fields snapped the ball quickly to catch the Commanders with 12 men on the field, then delivered a perfect deep ball to Pettis in the back of the end zone. The Bears went 94 yards on the 9-play drive.

"That was awesome," coach Matt Eberflus said. That was great. We've been trying to pull that off these first few games, and we did. Man, what a throw. We all know he's a great deep ball thrower and he threw right in there and Dante had a great catch and execution."

The Commanders cut down the Bears' lead to 7-6 as Slye kicked a 28-yard field goal with 14:51 left to play. On third-and-goal from the 10, tackle Justin Jones deflected Wentz's pass for an incompletion, forcing the field goal try. Running back Antonio Gibson accounted for 43 of the 65 yards on the 13-play drive.

After the Bears defense forced a three-and-out, Jones muffed the ensuing punt and Washington recovered the fumble at Chicago's 6-yard line. Robinson then punched it in from 1 yard out two plays later. While the Commanders failed on a two-point conversion, they took a 12-7 lead with 7:21 left in the game.

On the Bears following drive, an illegal use of hands penalty on cornerback Benjamin St-Juste sustained the possession after Fields was sacked on third-and-5. After a pair of incomplete passes, the Bears elected to go for it on fourth-and-11, but a delay of game penalty made it fourth-and-16. The offense stayed on the field, but Fields threw an incompletion intended for receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Washington took over with 2:28 to play.

15:56 Robert Lewandowski heroics save Barcelona in draw with Inter Milan
Robert Lewandowski rescued Barcelona's Champions League knockout round hopes with two late goals to earn his side a 3-3 draw with Inter Milan at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

Xavi Hernandez's Barca needed at least a draw to have a chance to avoid missing the knockout rounds for the second year in a row and the Poland international delivered the goods near the end of a dramatic second half.

Barcelona are still facing elimination at the group stage of the competition, but Lewandowski's stoppage-time equaliser gave them a slim chance of progressing with two games left.

Inter need a home win over Viktoria Plzen next week to join Bayern Munich in the last 16.

"It's bad, I think this Champions League is being very cruel to us," Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez told Movistar Plus. "Now it is out of our hands. What is left for us is to turn our attention quickly to Sunday's El Clasico [against Real Madrid], bounce back and focus on LaLiga because the Champions League became very difficult and complicated for us."

Edin Dzeko was denied by the crossbar for Inter's opener just after 15 minutes as the visitors looked to carry the momentum of their 1-0 win over Barca at the San Siro last Tuesday into the reverse fixture.

Barca, who pressed hard for their first, took a deserved lead into the break when Ousmane Dembele shot past Andre Onana from Sergi Roberto's pass across the six-yard box just before half-time.

Inter drew level early in the second half through Nicolo Barella, who pounced on a cross from Alessandro Bastoni and finished past Marc-Andre ter Stegen from close range.

Lautaro Martinez fired Simone Inzagh's side into the lead shortly past the hour mark with a fine individual effort, settling Hakan Calhanoglu's long ball over the top of the defence, beating his marker and lashing home a low shot to pile more pressure on Barca.

Summer-signing Lewandowski did what he was brought in to do in the 82nd minute as his header from a cross into the area came back to him off an Inter defender and he shot past Onana with a second effort to make it 2-2.

But Inter's Robin Gosens put Inter back in the lead minutes later with a tidy finish on the counter before Lewandowski headed in for his brace in second.

"It was too many mistakes, their first goal was a clear mistake by our defence, we let them have too many chances. Soccer is a game of mistakes and we can't afford those in situations like this," Xavi said.

"This is the Champions League and you pay a high price for each error you make. You need to win, to defend well, to score. We needed to play the entire game like we did in the first half. That intensity. Now it's hard because we are not in control anymore."

Barca are third in the Group C standings on four points, three behind Inter and eight adrift of Bayern, who clinched a spot in the knockout rounds with a win over Victoria Plzen on Wednesday.

22:09 American Idol runner-up Willie Spence dead at 23
American Idol” runner-up Willie Spence died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was 23.

The talented crooner was in Tennessee at the time of the accident, local news outlet Douglas Now reported.

“We are devastated about the passing of our beloved ‘American Idol’ family member, Willie Spence,” the show said in a statement via Twitter. “He was a true talent who lit up every room he entered and will be deeply missed. We send our condolences to his loved ones.”

Katharine McPhee, who performed a duet with Spence during his Season 19 appearance, posted videos mourning him on her Instagram Story.

“I received very tragic news tonight,” she wrote above a video of her and Spence meeting. “Sweet @williespenceofficial passed away in a car accident. Only 23 years old. Life is so unfair and nothing is ever promised.

“God rest your soul Willie. It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you.”

McPhee, 38, added a series of broken-heart emojis and also reposted the last video Spence shared, which shows him belting out a Christian song in a car, right before the accident.

“He posted this right before the accident [sobbing emoji],” she added.

Fans and followers flooded Spence’s post with comments about the tragic accident.

“Fly and sing with the angels and dance amongst the stars friend! RIH ,” commented one.

“My heart is broken and my prayers go out to his family,” he wrote over a photo of Spence. “I was lucky to have him sing for me live at my home and other events, I will miss you my friend. I know you touched so many of us. I’m heart broken.”

During the Season 19 finale, Spence sang “Georgia on My Mind,” “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Stand Up.” Though the judges were moved by his performance, Spence received fewer votes than Chayce Beckham, who became the American Idol.

Former ‘American Idol’ contestant Willie Spence dies in car crash at 23

Former “American Idol” finalist Willie Spence died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a car crash in Tennessee, according to Georgia news outlet Douglas Now. He was 23.

The fan-favorite “Idol” contestant was the runner-up in the competition program‘s 19th season last year. Chayce Beckham was the winner.

Fellow “American Idol” alum Katharine McPhee, who mentored and performed with Spence during Season 19, mourned the singer Tuesday on Instagram.

“I received very tragic news tonight,” McPhee wrote. “Life is so unfair and nothing is ever promised. God rest your soul, Willie. It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you.”

The “Smash” star also shared a video that Spence posted on Instagram “right before his accident.” In the clip, Spence passionately belts Selah’s “You Are My Hiding Place” in his car.

During his “American Idol” audition, the vocalist from Douglas, Ga., blew the celebrity judges away with a powerful rendition of Rihanna‘s “Diamonds.” After giving him a standing ovation, Lionel Richie hailed Spence as an “undeniable star,” while Luke Bryan deemed him “a special human being.”

“You, my friend, are so gifted,” Richie said. “On the first note, I had chills. ... That was an enjoyable session to watch.”

In April 2021, Spence released his debut EP, “The Voice,” followed by singles “Never Be Alone” and “The Living Years.”

“I just want my voice to reach the world and share my gift,” he told the judges at his “Idol” audition.

“Hopefully winning a Grammy one day, that’s where I see myself in five years. ... It’s going to take hard work, but I think I can do it.”
