Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett breaks finger in loss to 49ers

SEATTLE -- If the Seahawks are going to turn their recent slide around in time to make the playoffs, they'll likely have to do it without Tyler Lockett.

Seattle's leading receiver broke a bone in his index finger late in the team's 21-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. The team is still trying to determine the best course of action, coach Pete Carroll said, and it might be Lockett having surgery with the hope of returning at some point this season.

Carroll said the injury is a spiral crack and that it's "very similar" to the break running back Rashaad Penny suffered in training camp in 2018. Penny was injured on Aug. 13, had surgery two days later and was back for the Seahawks' Sept. 9 opener.

Carroll said Lockett believes he can return in two weeks.

"There's a couple different ways that they can do the surgery," Carroll said. "One of the ways gives him a chance to be back. Remember Rashaad Penny ... had an injury similar, very similar. So they've already floated that thought and they're going to talk about all the options and all that and we're going to love him up and take care of him. Whatever the right thing to do to take care of him, we're going to do."

Carroll said Lockett will need surgery at some point but didn't confirm that it will be right away, saying the receiver isn't "really fired up" about that option.

The Seahawks also lost nose tackle Bryan Mone to what Carroll called a "significant" ACL injury. He didn't have an update on linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who was pulled from the game in the second half because of a sore neck.

Lockett was hurt on Seattle's last drive, Carroll said. He finished with seven catches for 68 yards, snapping his franchise-record streak of six consecutive games with a receiving touchdown. He leads the Seahawks with 964 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns, while his 78 catches are one behind DK Metcalf.

Lockett, 30, has missed only two games in eight NFL seasons, one because of a broken leg late in 2016 and the other due to COVID-19 last year.

"I can't fathom playing without Tyler," Carroll said. "I got a chance to hang with him, just to try to express what it's like to be working with a guy like this for so long. He's such an incredible player. He's not in tremendous pain. He's got a broken hand. You feel sorry for him, but he's such a magnificent football player and a member of the team and member of the community and our area and our fans ... that we're gonna miss the heck out of him for whatever he misses."

Lockett is in his first season as an offensive captain.

"It sucks," said safety Quandre Diggs, one of Lockett's closest friends on the Seahawks. "Especially a guy like that gives it his all. The things that he does for the organization, that he does for this team, he's one of the vocal leaders, he's a captain for a reason. He's done it for a long time. He's somebody that I have a hell of a lot of respect for. I'll be there for him, of course."

The 49ers' win clinched the NFC West and gave the Seahawks their fourth loss in five games following a 6-3 start. They're currently one spot out of the NFC playoff standings, behind the Washington Commanders (7-5-1) and New York Giants (7-5-1) in wild-card seeding.

OT Peter Skoronski, projected top-10 pick, opts for NFL draft

Northwestern offensive tackle Peter Skoronski, one of nation's offensive linemen, has declared his intention to enter the 2023 NFL draft.

Skoronski, a junior who recently became the first unanimous All-American in team history, is listed as the top offensive lineman and No. 6 overall prospect for the draft by ESPN's Mel Kiper. He's No. 8 in the consensus rankings of ESPN's draft experts.

A three-time All-Big Ten selection, Skoronski was named the Big Ten's offensive lineman of the year this fall, and a finalist for the Outland Trophy, going to the nation's top interior lineman. Pro Football Focus graded him as the nation's top pass blocker this season, as he allowed only only six pressures on 480 pass-blocking snaps.

"It was not an easy decision to leave Northwestern with eligibility remaining," Skoronski wrote on Twitter. "I had always planned to be here for four years. But Northwestern has put me in a position that allows me to leave early."

He added that he plans to complete his degree following the draft. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Skoronski is the grandson of former NFL offensive tackle Bob Skoronski, a Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame selection who helped the Packers to five NFL championships and the organization's first two Super Bowl titles.

Source: Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy fined for bumping official

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who had his first three-touchdown game this past Sunday in the team's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, was fined $23,020 for bumping an official in the second quarter of the game, multiple sources told ESPN on Friday.

"I know they're going to fine me,'' Jeudy said Wednesday. "It is what it is. I know the consequences of the situation and I'm going to learn from it."

After a Russell Wilson incompletion on a pass intended for Brandon Johnson with 3 minutes, 45 seconds left in the first half Sunday, Jeudy angrily took off his helmet while still on the field of play, yelled at field judge Tripp Sutter as Jeudy moved toward the Broncos' bench and then bumped Sutter, shoulder to shoulder.

He was fined an additional $13,261 for unsportsmanlike conduct for removing his helmet, sources said.

At the time Jeudy, who could have been ejected from the game for physical contact to an official, had one reception for three yards. He went on to finish the game with eight receptions for 78 yards and three touchdowns.

Jeudy had been asked about the outburst immediately following the game as well.

"I was just -- on that certain play, I got held,'' he said. "I was just frustrated because we didn't have things going, so I was out there playing with frustration wanting to make a play for my team. I feel like at that point, I was just held and that should've been called but I have to know how to control my anger and just move on from there.''

Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said earlier this week he spoke to Jeudy about the play, both during the game as well as Monday.

"I didn't see it happen on the field. I was told by the referee that it had happened, so I went to address it right away and talk with him,'' Hackett said. "He definitely knew that he was wrong. That's unacceptable. You can't do that. We've addressed that and I know that he knows he can't do that. I know he was very frustrated at the time, but that's just something you can't do."

Fired assistant Sean Kugler requests arbitration with claims vs. Cardinals

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The law firm representing former Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach and run-game coordinator Sean Kugler filed a request for arbitration with multiple claims against the Cardinals on Wednesday in the wake of Kugler's firing in Mexico City before Arizona's game against the San Francisco 49ers for allegedly touching a female security guard.

Kugler's lawyer, Michael Petitti, said the allegations against Kugler "are simply untrue."

Kugler, in his first comments since being fired, called the allegations "mysterious" and said it could be a case of "miscommunication or mistaken identity."

"I want to clear my name," Kugler said.

Kugler was fired after the alleged incident, which took place on Nov. 20, the night before the game, multiple sources told ESPN. Kugler was sent home the next morning.

In a press release, Petitti said the Cardinals "dismissed Kugler from the organization without conducting a thorough investigation or interviewing him."

"Coach and his family have been desperate to understand from the Cardinals front office and others what rationale or evidence was used to terminate him for cause," Petitti said.

Kugler said respecting women is a "core value" of his and something he's "instilled in my children and the players that I coach."

"My family and I will cooperate fully and honestly with the NFL, Cardinals, or any other agency to get to the truth in this matter and restore my reputation," Kugler said in the release. "There are incredible people that work in the game -- from league level to my players, fellow coaches, and incredible support staff.

"I simply want to get back to doing what I love, and would like my family to have peace."

In November, Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said he was "really limited" in what he could comment on, including specifically addressing the reasons for Kugler's firing, because it had become a legal matter.
