Here are seven key takeaways as the Patriots fall to 7-8 on the 2022 season.

The Bengals raced out to an early lead on Christmas Eve afternoon and withstood a late Patriots rally, taking a 22-18 win in Week 16 as New England dips to a 7-8 record on the season. The Pats were hurt by a slow start that enabled a three-score Bengals lead at halftime, as it appeared New England suffered an extended hangover after their last-second stunning loss to the Raiders.

But with some help from the defense and some big plays by Kendrick Bourne, Marcus Jones and Matthew Judon the Patriots were able to climb back into the game to make it interesting down to the final drive. New England looked like they were poised to take an upset win, knocking on the door of a go-ahead score, but a Rhamondre Stevenson fumble suddenly and unceremoniously ended the thrilling comeback attempt.

Mac Jones finished 21-of-33 for 240 yards, while his counterpart on the Bengals Joe Burrow had 375 yards and three touchdowns, though Burrow also added two interceptions that helped keep New England's hopes alive. After a white-hot start, the Bengals production faded and their mistakes picked up, opening the door for New England's near comeback.

The Bengals reasserted themselves as a top team in the AFC and Super Bowl contender while the Patriots continue another late-season slide with just two games to go.

Here are the key takeaways from another late loss.

Bengals offense comes out firing

The Patriots defense had no answers against the first two Bengals drives of the game, as Joe Burrow picked them apart scoring two touchdowns to give Cincinnati an early lead. Thanks to a missed extra point and a Patriots stop on a two-point conversion attempt, the score was 12-0 and not 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Burrow had 11 straight completions to start the game, while the Patriots ran just six offensive plays in the first quarter.

It was a bad sign right out of the gate when Burrow hit Tee Higgins over Marcus Jones for a 38-yarder on the Bengals' second offensive play of the game. The second touchdown was a similar dart as Cincinnati hurried to the line and quickly fired a pass up the seam to receiver Trenton Irwin for an easy score. A later third-and-17 pass for 18 yards up the sideline to Jamarr Chase was another pinpoint throw by the quarterback as the Patriots battered cornerback group struggled to match up.

Meanwhile, the Patriots offense started cold with two-straight three-and-outs on their initial possessions of the game, showing no signs of life. It got even worse with Michael Palardy dropping the snap on his second punt, which set the Bengals up near midfield for their third possession.

Early on New England looked still shell-shocked from their loss in Vegas, offering little resistance on defense and unable to get anything going on offense.

Defense stiffens
After falling into a 15-0 hole the Patriots defense began to make some much-needed plays starting with a Ja'Whaun Bentley pass defense in the end zone that gave New England their first red zone stop of the game. With that, they continued to make plays on the Bengals next drive, first with sacks from Matthew Judon and Josh Uche and then getting a takeaway with Devin McCourty's red-zone interception that prevented Cinci from going up by three scores.

Penalties on the Patriots defense still kept the Bengals drive alive prior to the interception, adding nine yards for Cinci while still stringing together nine plays on the drive.

With the game hanging by a thread in the first half, the defense made some plays on one drive to get a stop but failed to keep it up on the last drive before halftime, allowing a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown scoring drive that made it 22-0 at halftime.

In the second half, the Patriots defense would find their stride again, forcing two punts and grabbing a pick-six on the first three possessions of the second half. But with the sputtering Patriots offense, they were unable to take advantage of the defense finally getting some stops until well into the second half.

Patriots offense struggles in first half
The Patriots offense had 70 total yards of offense in the first half, went 0-3 on third down and held the ball for just 8:20 in four total drives that all ended in punts. 29 of those yards, nearly half, all came from one carry from Kendrick Bourne as the Patriots offense just about bottomed out in the first half against the Bengals, unable to mount any kind of counterattack against one of the NFL's best offenses.

Match those numbers against the Bengals' offensive output: 22 points, 7-9 on third down, 303 yards of offense and 21:26 of possession and it's easy to see how lopsided the game was in the first half.

Marcus Jones gets another TD
Rookie Marcus Jones made things interesting with the Bengals threatening to add to their 22-0 third-quarter lead when Burrow threw up an ill-advised throw while under pressure from Kyle Dugger. The ball went right to Jones, who turned it into a 69-yard pick-six that made that game 22-6 late in the third quarter. Nick Folk missed the extra point, the third missed extra point at the closed end of the stadium during the game, as kicking was difficult due to cold and wind.

With the offense struggling to do anything, the defense once again came through with a score to provide a sudden unexpected spark.

Jones has been one of the bright spots this season with his walk-off punt return against the Jets and now this pick-six that gives him one to match fellow rookie Jack Jones who had one earlier this season against the Packers.

Bourne comes through
Following Jones' pick-six, the Patriots showed more signs of life, forcing an ensuing punt then putting together their best offensive drive of the game, an 11-play, 77-yard touchdown trot with Kendrick Bourne playing a key role. First, Bourne picked up the team's first third-down conversion of the game, then followed that with another, a scintillating 32-yard conversion catch with defensive backs all around him. It was reminiscent of Bourne's spectacular touchdown catch last year against the Browns.

Shortly after, Bourne would make a toe-tap catch on the back line to give New England their second touchdown of the second half. Suddenly the game got interesting at 22-12, though the Pats missed their two-point attempt that would've made it a one-score game.

The Bengals would miss a field goal on their next drive and the Patriots took over with Bourne once again making a key play on the drive. This time it was a 28-yard toe-tap catch along the sideline that was initially ruled incomplete but overturned to a catch upon review.

Deflected touchdown! Forced Fumble! We've got a game...almost
After taking an intentional grounding penalty that was compounded by a false start by Trent Brown, the Patriots faced a third-and29 from near midfield and Mac Jones decided to just let it fly. The ball initially bounced right off of practice squad tight end Scotty Washington's hands, but deflected perfectly into Jakobi Meyers arms for a shocking 48-yard score that, with another missed extra point, made it 22-18 with just under six minutes to play in the game.

It wasn't a conventional comeback in any sense but the Patriots continued to pick up steam in the second half, forcing the Bengals to post their first score since halftime to close the game out.

Then it was Matthew Judon's turn to make a big play, forcing a Jamarr Chase fumble that Marcus Jones recovered, setting the Patriots up at the 43-yard line with 3:12 left.

They'd get all the way to Cincinnati's three-yard line and then tragedy would strike to decide the final result with Rhamondre Stevenson coughing up the ball to give the Patriots their second game in a row ended by a critical unforced error.

Patriots are 7-8
Even with the late comeback surge it was arguably the worst loss of the Patriots 2022 season as New England is once again saddled with a losing record for 2022. The offense could not convert a third down until late into the game, while the defense made some big plays and stops after a slow start that ultimately weren't enough to make any kind of a difference.

Stevenson's late fumble was just the unfortunate cherry on top as self-inflicted mistakes continue to have a major impact on wins and losses this year. The terrible start ultimately overshadowed everything the offense did well down the stretch.

With the loss it appears New England's season will end without a playoff berth for the second time in three seasons, meaning a fourth-straight year without a playoff victory since they won Super Bowl 53. And, with two games against two more really good AFC teams left, their slide down the standings will only continue unless they find a way to squeeze out another win this season.

It's hard to believe the Patriots can suddenly find any magic after five months without any sustainable progress. Miami and Buffalo will offer similar challenges as New England looks to salvage something positive from a season that has turned out to be one of the most disappointing of recent history.

Defense Stands Tall As Bengals Stave Off Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Bengals celebrated Christmas Eve Saturday by showing a glimpse of Christmas Future in the living room of the masters of Christmas Past with a gut-wrenching 22-18 victory over the Patriots at Gillette Stadium that stretched 11-4 Cincinnati's winning streak to seven.

With sleeves down just to his elbows and wearing no gloves in his coldest NFL start yet, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow went from Joe Cool to Steamy Joe when he de-iced the 17-degree weather with a Bengals-record tying 40 completions for 375 yards, on a day he also tied his own team record with his 34th touchdown pass of the season. Burrow's 0th straight December and January win needed a last-minute stand on a fumble forced by safety Vonn Bell and recovered by nose tackle Josh Tupou.

Burrow hit wide receiver Trenton Irwin for two touchdowns and wide receiver Tee Higgins for one during Higgins' 128-yard day before the Pats began to crawl back in it.

With the Bengals trying to protect a 22-18 lead on a third-and-three with 3:12 left, Burrow threw a screen to wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase and Pats edge Matthew Judon forced a fumble the Pats recovered at the Bengals 43 and suddenly they were on the Bengals 16 at the two-minute warning when cornerback Eli Apple was called for a hold and the Pats jettisoned their running game.

But on first-and-five from the Bengals 5 with 65 seconds left, nose tackle DJ Reader stood up Pats running back Rhamondre Stevenson, Bell punched it out and Tupou and tackle B.J. Hill fell on it at the 8.

The comeback began when Burrow went back shoulder on the right sideline while Chase kept running the route on a third-and-11 late in the third quarter. The ball went right to cornerback Marcus Jones, who weaved his way down the left sideline for a 69-yard pick-six that cut Cincinnati's lead to 22-6 (Nick Folk missed the extra point). Then, the Bengals went three-and-out on three pass plays. On third-and-five, the Pats jumped a screen and Burrow had to throw it into the ground with still three minutes left in the third quarter.

It fired up the Pats. Quarterback Mac Jones, booed off the field at halftime, had time to convert two third downs to Kendrick Bourne, the second being a 29-yard moonball that Bourne came down with among three defenders. On third-and-goal from the Cincinnati five, Jones found Bourne again, with cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt's back to the quarterback, and it was 22-12 when the two-pointer failed.

It looked like the Bengals had sealed it on the next possession. The first snap after the Pats touchdown was Higgins' jump ball for 31 yards, putting him over 100 yards for the fourth time this season and 10th time in his career. On third-and-four, Burrow threw a beautiful ball down the seam to Irwin and it just went off his fingertips in the end zone. Then Evan McPherson's 43-yard field goal try sailed left with 6:59 left after he had missed an extra point in the first half, when another missed PAT was wiped out by penalty.

New England looked like it had some holiday magic working on the next drive, starting with a 28-yard pass to Bourne that was originally ruled incomplete, before the Patriots challenged it and the replay showed Bourne somehow got both feet in bounds. Two plays later, Jones was called for intentional grounding when he got rid of the ball as Bell was taking him down on a blitz, but Zac Taylor threw his own red flag on the play, arguing Jones had lost control before slipping it out of his left hand. To Taylor's dismay, the ruling stood, and two snaps later Jones threw up a prayer on third-and-29 that was batted down by former Bengals tight end Scotty Washington, but miraculously fell into the waiting arms of Pats receiver Jakobi Meyers for a touchdown that made it 22-18 with another missed PAT by Folk.

Among the Bengals defensive highlights early on were slot cornerback Mike Hiton securing a third-down tackle on Meyers in space a yard shy of the first down, a sack by Tupou in the shadow of the Pats' goalposts set up by Bell's blitz (one of four sacks) and tackle Cam Sample's half-sack bolting out of the interior.

Burrow finished the first half onslaught the way he started it, with a microwave touchdown drive he completed with his third touchdown pass of the day, tying his own Bengals record with his 34th of the season. It was Irwin's second of the day, a four-yarder on third down he ripped away from cornerback Shaun Wade. Slot receiver Tyler Boyd wriggled for a first down converting a third-and-eight and right tackle Hakeem Adeniji, playing for the injured La'el Collins, was all over 10.5-sacker Josh Uche and didn't let him near Burrow on the touchdown pass. Boyd, who dislocated his finger two weeks ago against Cleveland, reaggravated it Saturday and missed some snaps in the second quarter, but battled through for three catches.

That left Burrow with one of the great first half performances in Bengals history with a heated 284 yards on 77 percent passing (28-36) for a 115.7 passer rating. But that wasn't more than the 344 yards he had in the first half against the Falcons back in October.

He hit his first four passes for 73 yards in the game's opening drive the Bengals dissected head coach Bill Belichick's vaunted defense on just five plays and 2:36. The 6-4 Higgins was no match for the 5-8 Marcus Jones on a 39-yard fling perfectly placed for Higgins to high-point it.

The Pats were forced to call a timeout when they had 12 men in the huddle and running back Joe Mixon picked up a first down when he was wide open for a flip in the flat after he carried out his play-action fake. Then from the Pats 9, Higgins was wide open under a zone at the 1 and proceeded to bowl over cornerback Jonathan Jones for the game's first touchdown. Kicker Evan McPherson then missed the first of his first two wide extra points. (He also hooked a 43-yard attempt left with nine minutes left in the game.)

But Burrow kept the heat on in the frost in the second drive. After Bengals nose tackle DJ Reader forced a sack, Burrow sliced them again, this time five-for-five for 48 yards. He converted his first third down when he ran to his right away from Judon and his 14.5 sacks. He needed three yards and he hook slid for the first down.

Then on first down Burrow took advantage of late safety help for a 23-yard touchdown pass when he dropped a beauty to Irwin on what looked to be a post-pattern and he made a nice lunging catch just before strong safety Devin McCourty could get over there. Burrow was literally perfect with a 158.3 rating on nine-for-nine passing for 121 yards on the first two drives.

McPherson missed the PAT again, but a Pats' roughing penalty moved the ball to the 1, so they went for two and running back Samaje Perine got stacked up when he tried the right side.

But the Bengals' 12-0 lead marked the Patriots' biggest deficit heading into a second quarter at Gillette in nine years with Burrow smoking in the first quarter on 13 of 15 for 165 yards while Mac Jones had 0.0 yards

It quickly became 15-0 on the second play of the second quarter when McPherson knocked through a 28-yard field goal after Mixon's two-yard touchdown was called back on holding by former Patriots tight Devin Asiasi. The drive was made by Burrow's third-and-17 conversion to Chase, left one-on-one with Marcus Jones and when Chase stopped in front of him on the right sideline it was an 18-yard first down in the red zone.

But on their next red zone trip, Burrow suffered his interception inside-the-20 all season and it translated into McCourty's 34th career interception when he got inside Boyd at the Patriots 15. It looked like Chase might have got them there a little sooner than that when Burrow put a deep ball on Chase's shoulder pad that he couldn't corral.

Bengals vs Patriots: Breaking down the Week 16 announcers

The Cincinnati Bengals continue their road trip this week and will face the 7-7 New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. The Patriots used to be a team that was terrifying to face but that hasn't been the case since Tom Brady left after the 2019 season. That's also the last time the Bengals faced New England.

During Brady's long tenure in New England, the Patriots were typically either the reigning Super Bowl champions or the reigning AFC champions. The Bengals can currently relate to the reigning AFC champions part and look to have the right outcome this time around but they need a win on Saturday (yes, Saturday) to help ensure they get the best possible seeding in the playoffs.

Even if the Patriots aren't the same terror they once were, that defense is no slouch, surrendering the sixth-fewest yards per game, according to Team Rankings.

Bengals vs Patriots Week 16 announcers
On the call for this feisty AFC matchup is Ian Eagle and Charles Davis. This is a crew that Bengals fans are pretty familiar with and it's a fitting crew for this game. This isn't a marquee matchup by any means but it's interesting enough to draw a decent crew.

I mentioned above how the Patriots defense was pretty good (which isn't shocking for a Bill Belichick-led defense) but their offense is another story and is why the stripes should win this game handily. The Pats offense is currently totaling the eighth-fewest yards per game while the Bengals' offense is in the top 10 when it comes to yards per game.

Will the Patriots defense be able to slow the Bengals high-scoring offense down? Will the Bengals defense continue to make the Pats offense look anemic? We'll find out on Saturday.
