TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman J.J. Watt announced in a tweet Tuesday morning that he will retire after this season.

"Koa's first ever NFL game. My last ever NFL home game. My heart is filled with nothing but love and gratitude. It's been an absolute honor and a pleasure," he tweeted along with a picture of him holding son Koa and standing next to wife Kealia at Sunday night's game between the Cardinals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Watt's 12-year career has two games left, both road trips, to the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers.He'll walk away as one of the most dominant defensive players of his generation and a likely first-ballot Hall of Famer. Watt is one of three players to be named the Defensive Player of the Year three times, joining Aaron Donald and Lawrence Taylor.

All three of those awards came when he played for the Houston Texans (2012, 2014 and 2015), the franchise that selected him 11th overall in 2011 out of Wisconsin.

Watt will finish his career with the Cardinals, having signed with them before the 2021 season after spending 10 seasons with the Texans. He is one of three Watt brothers to play in the NFL.

Koa, Watt's first child, was born in October. In late September, Watt had the rhythm of his own heart reset after experiencing atrial fibrillation, then played days later.

Watt has 111.5 sacks (26th on the NFL's career list), a statistic that has officially been tracked since 1982. He also is the only player to record 20-plus sacks in multiple seasons (2012, 2014).

Since Watt was drafted in 2011, there are only three other players -- Von Miller, Cameron Jordan and Chandler Jones -- who have more sacks than him. He is first in batted passes, second in fumble recoveries and tied for third in forced fumbles during that time.

Watt also has 28 games with at least two sacks, five more than anyone else since 2011, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

He's one of four players to have 100 career sacks and five touchdowns. Watt also has had four seasons with at least 15 sacks since 1982, second to his childhood idol, Hall of Famer Reggie White, who had five.

Watt -- who is the career sack leader for the Texans with 101, almost twice as many sacks as the next closest on the franchise's career list -- is still playing at a high level at 33 years old.

Among the 48 players with at least 10 pass breakups this season, Watt leads all of them with 28 pressures and is tied with Daron Payne for most sacks with 9.5.

Watt's impact, however, went beyond the field.

His foundation has raised $6.7 million since it was started in 2010, when he was still in college. His initial goal was to raise $100,000, he said recently on Twitter.

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Watt's foundation raised more than $37 million to distribute to victims. His initial goal for that was $200,000.

Arizona Cardinals star defensive end JJ Watt to retire after this season

Arizona Cardinals defensive end JJ Watt, one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, will retire after the 2022 season, he announced on Tuesday.

Watt, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, said he played his “last ever” home game this past Sunday, a 19-16 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“My heart is filled with nothing but love and gratitude,” Watt wrote on Twitter. “It’s been an absolute honor and a pleasure.”

Arizona’s remaining two games of the season are on the road – at the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday and at the San Francisco 49ers on January 8.

“The pleasure was all ours,” the Cardinals responded in a tweet.

Known as a dominant pass rusher, Watt is likely bound for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, for which he will be eligible in 2028.

The 33-year-old was named Defensive Player of the Year three times, tied for most in league history with Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald and New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor.

The seven-time All Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection, according to the NFL, was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans where he played his first 10 seasons. He owns the Texans franchise record for the most career sacks with 101.

In March 2021, Watt signed a two-year contract with the Cardinals as a free agent.

Watt is well-known for his work off the field.

After Hurricane Harvey devastated areas around Houston and the rest of the Gulf Coast in August 2017, Watt embarked on what would be his most career-defining charitable effort to date.

Through a YouCaring campaign and plenty of social media attention and help from some famous friends, Watt raised more than $37 million for victims of the floods and damage Harvey left behind. Because of his fundraising, he was awarded the 2017 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, which is given to honor the charity and volunteer efforts of NFL players.

Watt has two brothers, T.J. and Derek, who play in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The three Watt brothers played college football at the University of Wisconsin.

JJ Watt revealed in a social media post earlier this season that he underwent treatment for atrial fibrillation – an irregular heartbeat described by many sufferers as a “quiver,” “flutter,” or “flip-flop” of the heart.

Top 11 active locks in the NFL for Pro Football Hall of Fame: Where does J.J. Watt rank?

There have been close to 30,000 players in NFL history, with just over 300 of them making it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame so far. They're the true one-percenters -- the best of the best.

So it's hard to get to Canton, and some exceptional players are still rightfully waiting to hear their name called. But there are also the obvious cases -- the no-brainer, no-questions-asked players whose HOF qualifications are clear even while they're still playing. And there are quite a few active players who fit into that category.

J.J. Watt is one of them. When the three-time Defensive Player Of the Year winner announced on Twitter on Tuesday that he will retire after this season, it got us thinking: Where does Watt rank among the active future Hall of Famers in terms of how strong their HOF cases are?

For clarity's sake, the fact that Watt appears below, say, Tom Brady on this list doesn't necessarily mean we think Watt is less of a defensive lineman than Brady was a quarterback. Rather, we're saying that Brady is about as certain a Canton bet as there is in the game now, possessing a truly unimpeachable resume. After all, there might be some who feel that Watt's career was too short to brand him a first-ballot Hall of Famer. (Although we'd admittedly like a word with those folks.)

We tried to whittle our list of the surest active-player HOF locks down as far as we could and slot Watt in among them, from the strongest case in descending order. And, yes, we know there are many other current players who deserve to be mentioned as likely enshrinees one day. But part of the fun -- and the chore -- of the exercise is to find the surest of the sure things and make this list as exclusive as possible.

With Bucs since: 2020. Also played for: New England Patriots (2000-2019).

A mortal lock: There's no other way to categorize it. We could run through Brady's dizzying stats or his unparalleled longevity or team success, but by now you likely have most of it down by heart.

The Athletic's Zak Keefer recently relayed a great anecdote that Hall of Fame voter Mike Chappell shared when Chappell was presenting Peyton Manning's case to the other 49 HOF voters, before Manning made it in as part of the Class of 2021. Chappell stood up in the room and said: "Peyton Manning. End of discussion."

When it's Tom's turn, it might suffice for his presenter to simply say: "Brady."

With Packers since: 2005.

Rodgers' case is nearly as compelling as Brady's, with one clear separator.

Yes, A-Rod has averaged more yards per attempt (7.7 to 7.4), has a higher career TD rate (6.2 percent to 5.4 percent) and a better completion percentage (65.3 to 64.3) than Brady in his career, albeit in about 100 fewer regular-season games. But it's Brady's postseason work that adds a few more feathers to his cap, even if some might feel Rodgers was the better pure talent at his peak. Either way, we're talking about two of the very best to ever do it -- in this era or any other.
