Post Malone fell through a trap door onstage at his show in St. Louis on Saturday night. While performing “Circles,” he took a wrong step and landed halfway in an opening that was used to lower his guitar earlier in the show. Medics came and took the rapper away. It was unclear whether or not the concert would go on until Posty emerged 15 minutes later with an apology.

“St. Louis, I’m so fucking sorry I ruined the show tonight, ladies and gentleman,” he said. “I promise next time I come around, I won’t fucking wreck y’alls night, I’m sorry for that. That being said, fuck… That being said, I want to thank you for your patience and I’m sorry.”

TAKES TERRIBLE FALL ONSTAGE ...
Medics Help Him Off, Fans Confused

Post Malone took a super nasty fall onstage ... it was so bad, medics had to help him off and the fans didn't know whether to wait it out or pack it in.

It happened Saturday night in St. Louis at the Enterprise Center halfway through the concert, where he was performing "Circles."

Post was showin' his stuff as he walked down a ramp that extended onto the floor of the arena. It would've gone fine, but there was a hole in the floor that he used to lower his guitar and it hadn't been covered up.

He stepped in it and took an awful fall ... sprawled out on the concert floor. An eyewitness tells TMZ one of his legs was shaking uncontrollably. Medics rushed in and eventually flanked him as he left the stage.

He asked fans to give him a few minutes to collect himself, but clearly, everyone was concerned and some doubtful he'd even return.

15 minutes later, Post resurfaced and performed "Rockstar" and "Cooped Up." "Rockstar" fits because Post was determined to continue even though he clearly was in pain ... clutching his ribs as he sang.

Post thanked the crowd for hangin' in there and told them there was a "big-ass hole in the stage" and even apologized -- not necessary. He finished out the show and even stayed after to sign a few autographs.

No word on his condition ... but he's scheduled to continue his "Twelve Carat Tour" in Columbus Sunday.

Post Malone helped out by medics after falling through stage at gig

Medics had to rush to Post Malone's aid after the singer fell through the stage while performing in Missouri this weekend.

Posty is currently on tour in the US and Canada, with shows scheduled regularly until the middle of November, but on Saturday night (17 September) he was forced to take a short break from his gig while performing at the Enterprise Center in St Louis.

Footage from the event shows Malone singing on a platform which stretched out from the stage to the centre of the crowd, happily performing his popular track 'Circles' when the floor suddenly gave way beneath him.

One of his legs fell straight through the stage and Malone crashed to the floor along with it, smacking his torso and apparently also his head against the platform in the process.

As the crowd let out gasps of shock, the singer quickly rolled on to his back and appeared to be clutching his ribs in pain.

According to TMZ, the hole in the stage had appeared when Posty had lowered his guitar out of sight, but it hadn't been covered up again afterwards. An eyewitness told the publication one of the singer's legs was shaking uncontrollably in the aftermath of the event, and footage shows medics quickly rushing to his aid.

Malone was escorted from the stage and went backstage for a quick recovery period, but he remained determined to entertain his fans as he returned 15 minutes later to perform his tracks 'Rockstar' and 'Cooped Up'.

He could be seen clutching his ribs as his sang, indicating he was still in pain from the fall, but he proved himself to be a true star as he thanked the crowd for putting up with the delay, told them there was a 'big-a** hole in the stage' and apologised to fans for the situation.

Posty then successfully completed the show and even handed out a few autographs afterwards. He hasn't posted any updates about his condition on social media, but there's nothing to suggest his show in Columbus this evening has been cancelled or rescheduled, indicating he's still good to go.

The 'Sunflower' singer has been praised for the way he handled the situation and has been met with a wealth of support from fans hoping he 'gets well soon' and praying for his 'fast recovery'.

21:53 Chasing 700 and a championship: Pujols hits HR No. 698

ST. LOUIS -- Continuing to hit home runs with great meaning -- both in terms of historical significance and to the Cardinals' chances of landing a top playoff seed -- Albert Pujols hit the 698th home run of his career Friday against the Reds.

With the Cardinals trailing by two runs in the sixth inning, Pujols hit a hanging slider from Raynel Espinal a Statcast-projected 427 feet to tie the game at 4. The blast, which left his bat at 106.3 mph, pulled the slugger within two home runs of 700. Only three players in AL/NL history have hit 700 home runs -- Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth -- and Pujols is making a charge to join them before he retires at the end of this season. The Cardinals have 17 games remaining after the 6-5 win at Busch Stadium for Pujols to try to hit at least two more home runs.

“At the end of the day, it’s just about whatever you can do to help this ballclub,” Pujols said. “Obviously, when they come in a big situation like this it’s awesome. We’re pushing to try and win the division, and this is what we need.”

“I like when he homers then,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol joked. “That was a big swing. He continues to do it in meaningful situations, and that’s what matters. It would be one thing if he was just chasing [700], but he’s taking an unbelievable approach and then delivering when we need it most. Is he chasing 700? Yes, but he’s chasing a championship more than that.”

Pujols’ mammoth shot off Espinal also extended his AL/NL record to 453 pitchers he has gone deep against. He came into the season second behind Barry Bonds, but he passed him a few weeks back and he’s continued to extend the record.

Also, there’s this as it relates to the power of Pujols home runs this season: The Cardinals are 15-1 in games when Pujols hits a home run. Three times this season he’s hit two home runs, and the Redbirds are 3-0 in those games.

“It’s unbelievable, man. Usually with fans, they get up when the ball’s hit, but here they’re already up,” marveled star third baseman Nolan Arenado, who had a double, a single, two RBIs and the defensive play of the night by throwing Cincinnati’s Kyle Farmer out at the plate from his knees. “It’s crazy and different. When the fans knew it was gone, they were going nuts. It’s just really cool to be a part of this. Seriously, it’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.”

Added star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who had two hits and an RBI: “I’m just enjoying it and thankful that I’m getting to be in this moment with him. It’s something that I’ll never get to be a part of, and this is something that we might never see again. I’m just trying to take it in and remember it for as long as I can.”

Pujols hit the first pitch he saw from Espinal for a home run Friday. It was the 89th first-pitch home run of Pujols’ career. The only counts where he’s hit more home runs have come on 1-1 (99 HRs) and 1-0 (92). Pujols noted that former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa used to try to get him to swing at more first-pitch strikes, but he said he is more comfortable hitting later in counts after he’s seen a few pitches.

“Tony was one of the guys who was always mad at me for taking a bunch of first pitches, but I still take a lot of first pitches,” said Pujols, who will be in the starting lineup of Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader against Reds left-hander Mike Minor. “I feel like I’m a better hitter with two strikes. Really, I don’t really change [my mindset]. If it’s not the pitch I’m looking for, I take it. On that at at-bat, I actually wasn’t looking to swing at the first pitch, but I just got a good pitch to hit, and I reacted on it.”

Prior to Friday’s game, Pujols played catch with former Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernández. Fernández, who was a guest of Pujols’ at the game, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. He told Pujols that if he hit two home runs Friday, he might have to cancel his business trip to New York the next day.

Pujols thought he might have had a second home run when he drove a ball to the wall in the seventh inning, but it came just a couple of feet shy of being No. 699 of his career. He said he is feeling the energy from the baseball fans at Busch Stadium, but also the estimated 11 million people back in his native Dominican Republic.

“I can feel that energy, and when I’m going out there and performing, I’m going out there to represent God, this organization and also my country,” said Pujols, who has hit 62 homers off the Astros, 59 off the Cubs, 54 against the Pirates and 49 against the Reds. “I want to make my country proud every single day that I step onto that field.”

11:46 Winners, losers from Chargers-Chiefs on Thursday Night Football

The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers delivered on Thursday night.

In a back-and-forth affair, Kansas City erased a 10-point third-quarter deficit and held on to beat Los Angeles, 27-24.

Patrick Mahomes (2 TDs) and Justin Herbert (3 TDs), as expected, led the way for their respective squads.

Before giving away too much more, let’s take a look at some winners and losers from Thursday Night Football:

Winner: The Watsons

Two plays shifted the game for the Chiefs, and they both came courtesy of a man named Watson.

First, it was wide receiver Justin Watson. With Kansas City trailing 17-7 in the third quarter, Watson beat newly paid Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson for a 41-yard touchdown catch. The 26-year-old Watson hasn’t had many highlights in his NFL career, totaling just 23 receptions in his first four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The second play came from cornerback Jaylen Watson. A seventh-round rookie, Watson was one of the Chiefs’ best players in the secondary all night. At this point, the score was tied at 17 and the Chargers were driving. They got down to the goal line when Herbert misfired, giving Watson the opportunity to pounce. He did just that, intercepting the pass and returning it 99 yards for the tie-breaking score.

Loser: Chargers for Charger-ing

We’ve seen this story too many times. Regardless of the coaches or players, the Chargers always find a way to give away wins.

Leading 17-7 midway through the third quarter, the Chargers allowed 20 unanswered points before a garbage time score. In the process, their star quarterback suffered a rib injury. If Herbert isn’t healthy – which he didn’t look to be, even after returning – the Chargers could quickly fall behind in a competitive AFC West. The good news is that they have a long week before they face the Jaguars on Sept. 25.

Los Angeles had a prime (video) opportunity to improve to 2-0, both overall and in the division after beating the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1. In an AFC West that could be decided on a tiebreaker, in-division record will be crucial.

Winner: Patrick Mahomes

When isn’t this guy a winner?

Mahomes had a few potential interceptions dropped, but he ultimately was in total control for most of the night. The 2018 league MVP finished 24 of 35 for 235 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his two-game total to seven touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Entering this season, there were questions about how Mahomes would play without Tyreek Hill. He has quickly silenced those doubters, spreading the ball out to a number of different weapons. Nine different Chiefs had a reception on Thursday, and six different players have already caught a touchdown from Mahomes after two weeks.

Winner: Mike Williams

The Chargers won’t be happy losing to a division rival, but Williams was one positive after a quiet Week 1 performance.

He had just two catches for 10 yards last week, even after Chargers No. 1 receiver Keenan Allen left with an injury. Against the Chiefs, though, Williams performed like a No. 1 option with Allen sidelined. He had eight receptions for 113 yards and a wild, one-handed touchdown grab.

Loser: Injuries

Herbert’s injury could be a killer, but we’ll wait on more details before speculating. It wasn’t only that, though, as L.A. also lost its starting center Corey Linsley and right tackle Trey Pipkins.

The offensive line has long been an issue for the Chargers. It finally looked like the problem was solved heading into this season, with stud left tackle Rashawn Slater and first-round rookie Zion Johnson as recent additions. Now, there are questions again about keeping Herbert on his feet.

21:54 Aaron Judge Was Asked Whether He’d Sign With Red Sox

Aaron Judge is having a season for the ages. On Tuesday night, he continued his torrid Yankees campaign at Fenway Park against the rival Red Sox, blasting home runs 56 and 57 on the season in a 7–6 win.

The homers put him just four shy of Roger Maris for the franchise single-season record, and the mark that many consider the true milestone, given the steroid concerns that loom over Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa—the only three players to hit more than Maris’s 61 home runs in a season.

In most situations, Judge’s season would make him a locked-in franchise cornerstone, a player with no questions about their future with baseball’s most historic franchise. However, Judge will hit unrestricted free agency in the offseason after avoiding arbitration earlier this year with a one-year, $19 million deal. A few months before he could conceivably walk away from New York after one of the greatest seasons in Yankees history, one reporter had to ask: would Judge ever play for the Red Sox?

“Ooh,” Judge said, eliciting a laugh from the encircled reporters. “We’ll talk about that at the end of the year.”

The non-answer came after Judge remarked about how much he enjoyed playing in front of Red Sox fans in Boston.

“It’s the best, they’re some of the best in baseball. They’re going to boo you, they’re going to say some things, they’re going to make you laugh,” Judge said. “It’s all part of it. A lot of great history here, and this is one of the best places to play, so it’s always fun going out there and trying to put on a show for them.”

Judge continues his pursuit of history at 7:10 p.m. ET Wednesday at Fenway Park.

4 takeaways as Yankees beat Red Sox, Aaron Judge reaches 57 homers

The Red Sox rallied but couldn't beat the Yankees in a 10-inning game full of homers.

The Red Sox kept pace with the Yankees in a slugfest for nine innings on Tuesday, but fell 7-6 in the 10th.

Here’s what happened.

The Big Picture

After a scoreless first inning, Triston Casas got the Red Sox on the board with a two-run homer over the Green Monster — the second homer and third hit of his MLB career to date. The Yankees, however, tied the game in the next frame when former Red Sox utility player Marwin Gonzalez ripped a two-run homer of his own.

Reese McGuire hit his first homer of the season in the third to give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead that held until the sixth, when Aaron Judge lined his 56th of the season over the right-field wall. Xander Bogaerts continued his recent hot streak with a 332-foot liner that found its way around the Pesky Pole in the bottom of the sixth, but Judge hit number 57 in the eighth to tie the game back up.

In the 10th, however, the Yankees scored three runs on a bases-clearing double by Gleyber Torres. The Red Sox scored twice in their half when Alex Verdúgo drove in Kiké Hernandez with a single and Connor Wong scored on a wild pitch, but Rafael Devers struck out, stranding Verdugo — the potential tying run — on second.

17:23 Rapper PnB Rock fatally shot during robbery at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles

PnB Rock, the Philadelphia rapper best known for his 2016 hit “Selfish,” was fatally shot during a robbery at the Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles restaurant in South Los Angeles on Monday afternoon, law enforcement sources told The Times.

Los Angeles police Capt. Kelly Muniz said a shooting took place at 1:15 p.m. at the famous eatery on Main Street and Manchester Avenue. She would not identify the victim.

Rock, 30, whose real name was Rakim Allen, had been at the restaurant with his girlfriend, who had posted a location-tagged photo in a since-deleted Instagram post.

Muniz said a suspect brandished a firearm inside the restaurant and demanded items from the victim. Sources told The Times that Rock was targeted for his jewelry.

The victim was shot almost immediately by the assailant during the robbery, Muniz said.

“He shot the victim and ran out the side door to a getaway car and then fled the parking lot,” she said.

Muniz said the victim was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 1:59 p.m.

According to a law enforcement source, Los Angeles Police Department investigators are examining security video from inside the restaurant to identify the shooter. They also are checking surrounding businesses to see whether security systems captured any images of the suspect leaving on foot or in a vehicle.

Investigators were processing evidence Monday night, Muniz said. She declined to comment on what was recovered.

Rock was born Dec. 9, 1991, in Philadelphia. He told Paper Magazine he was inspired to make music at age 19 after hearing Drake’s decade-defining album “Take Care.”

Rock’s ability to blend melodies with his rapping made him a natural fit for hip-hop’s next evolution. He gained national prominence with the 2015 single “Fleek,” turning the viral Vine video into an anthem for women doing up their appearance across the country. He went on to collaborate with a bevy of artists, including Ed Sheeran and Chance the Rapper on “Cross Me.”

One of his biggest moments came alongside Atlanta rapper YFN Lucci, when the two joined forces in 2016 for the victorious anthem “Everyday We Lit.” The song peaked at No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest-charting song for either artist.

“It’s like, what do you label yourself, when you still infuse rap into your s—?” he told Paper Magazine in 2017. “People can’t say I’m a rapper, but I don’t feel like I’m a singer either. I’m not hitting super high notes and going crazy. I can’t give you Chris Brown singing. I just got good melodies.”

“Selfish” peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rock released his latest song, “Luv Me Again,” on Sept. 2.

Rock’s death comes as authorities say they are up against a rising trend of “follow home” robberies and other violent incidents.

In February 2020, Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke, whose real name was Bashar Barakah Jackson, was killed during a home invasion in the Hollywood Hills.

Authorities believe social media posts, including one of a black gift bag tagged with his address, led the assailants to his location.

The LAPD’s Southeast Community Police Station, which covers the area where Monday’s shooting occurred, has seen 34 homicides this year through Sept. 3, compared with 35 over the same period last year.

The rapper said he was out with his girlfriend and daughter on Fairfax Avenue “mid-pandemic” when people tried to rob him.

“Where I’m from, we like sneaky criminals,” Rock said. “In L.A. … they bold.”

Rock and the host spoke about how robberies targeting rappers seemed to be becoming more common.

“I never got robbed, ever in my life,” Rock said. “I ain’t gonna say never because I don’t like saying never. I’m not superstitious, but I haven’t been robbed.”

“That’s why I feel like L.A.’s spooky, man,” Akademiks said. “It’s just so bold. I’m seeing mad videos, like they don’t even do it at night. Like night maybe, but broad daylight, that’s when they really do it.”

Rock said that after his oldest brother was killed, he changed — becoming more on edge and conscious of how suddenly a situation could turn deadly.

“It’s just been something in me that just let me know, like this s— real life,” Rock said. “I done seen people die. I done been around people that died…. Anybody can die.”

Offensive spotlight: Bills quarterback Josh Allen was the star of the show. He went 24-of-29 for 279 yards and three touchdowns from a clean pocket and finished the game with two big-time throws. He added 56 yards and a touchdown from 10 rushing attempts, too.

Defensive spotlight: Von Miller‘s Bills career got off on the right foot, as the 11-year veteran recorded two sacks and three hurries from 25 pass-rush snaps. Per PFF's first review of the game film, he beat his blocker once every five snaps he played.

BALTIMORE RAVENS 24, NEW YORK JETS 9
Rookie spotlight: Sauce Gardner continues to look like a cornerback no quarterback will want to target with frequency. He saw just two targets on the day, breaking up one and allowing a catch on the other for only eight yards.

Offensive line spotlight: The Jets' offensive line combined to allow a whopping 20 pressures on first review. Laken Tomlinson was the main victim, surrendering seven hurries and losing another seven reps that didn't become pressure.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS 27, ATLANTA FALCONS 26
Offensive spotlight: Boy, is it good to see Michael Thomas back healthy. While he did drop a couple of passes, Thomas hauled in five of eight targets for 57 yards and two scores in his first game back from injury. They eased him in, playing him nearly exclusively in passing situations. Of his 35 snaps on the day, 33 were pass plays.

Defensive spotlight: The Saints' new safety duo made their presence felt Sunday. Marcus Maye didn’t allow a reception on his lone target, while Tyrann Mathieu allowed one catch on two targets for one yard.

MIAMI DOLPHINS 20, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 7
Offensive spotlight: Tyreek Hill looks like he will be a high-volume threat for the Dolphins. He had 12 targets and eight catches, and both marks were at least double the next-best mark from a Miami receiver. Hill ended up with 94 yards, but his PFF grade will suffer for fumbling the ball out of bounds while carrying it with the wrong hand, leaving it vulnerable to being knocked loose.

Defensive spotlight: Miami’s defense had little in the way of pressure, but the unit did combine for five forced incompletions. Nik Needham allowed three catches — the most among Dolphins cornerbacks — but those passes went for just 38 total yards and he forced an incompletion.

CLEVELAND BROWNS 26, CAROLINA PANTHERS 24
Offensive spotlight: Baker Mayfield‘s revenge game didn't go exactly as planned, and the Panthers quarterback is set to earn a sub-55.0 passing grade after making two turnover-worthy plays and one big-time throw.

Defensive spotlight: Myles Garrett ensured rookie left tackle Ikem Ekwonu didn't enjoy his NFL debut. The pass-rusher racked up six pressures, including two sacks, and earned a 94.4 pass-rushing grade on first review.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS 23, CINCINNATI BENGALS 20
Rookie spotlight: After a red-hot preseason, Steelers wide receiver George Pickens was kept in check during his first regular season game. On 24 offensive snaps, he saw three targets, which yielded just one catch for three yards.

Offensive line spotlight: New Bengals offensive lineman Alex Cappa had a decent first game as the team’s starting left guard. His initial 62.7 PFF grade was second-best on the team and third-best in the game overall. He did not yield a sack, and his 67.7 initial pass-blocking grade was higher than each of his averages the past two seasons.

CHICAGO BEARS 19, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS 10
Rookie spotlight: Edge defender Dominique Robinson played only 20 defensive snaps, but he was a constant disruptive factor along the Bears’ frontline. The fifth-round selection from Miami (OH) had three total pressures, including two sacks, during his NFL debut to earn a pending 77.2 pass-rushing grade.

Offensive line spotlight: Tevin Jenkins was more of a run-blocking factor than a pass-blocking one, but he still finished with an 81.7 offensive grade on 32 total snaps, pending review. His pass-protection resume consisted of just one pressure allowed on 13 pass-blocking plays, and he registered a 78.7 run-blocking grade on 18 run-blocking snaps.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 38, DETROIT LIONS 35
Offensive spotlight: Both teams ran wild amid lackluster passing games. For the Eagles, Jalen Hurts gained 66 yards after contact of his 90 total, and he also forced six missed tackles. For the Lions, D'Andre Swift went well over the century mark and broke six tackles of his own to earn an 80.0-plus rushing grade on first review.

Defensive spotlight: Darius Slay faced a game-high nine targets but allowed only three catches for 55 yards — albeit one for a touchdown. He is still on track to lead Philadelphia's secondary in coverage grade.

Rookie spotlight: Derek Stingley Jr. played 56 snaps in coverage and allowed six catches on nine targets for 81 yards. He did force an incompletion to salvage an otherwise subpar debut in coverage.

Offensive line spotlight: First-round rookie guard Kenyon Green stayed clean in pass protection on 20 such snaps. He is on track to earn a 75.0-plus pass-blocking grade.

WASHINGTON COMMANDERS 28, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 22
Offensive spotlight: Christian Kirk shined in his Jaguars debut as Trevor Lawrence‘s top receiver, tallying six catches on nine targets for 117 yards. Fifty of those yards came after contact, and he also forced a missed tackle.

Defensive spotlight: Jonathan Allen, Montez Sweat and Daron Payne wreaked havoc on the Jaguars' offensive line to combine for 15 pressures, including three sacks.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 44, ARIZONA CARDINALS 21
Offensive spotlight: If Patrick Mahomes misses Tyreek Hill, he certainly didn’t show it against the Cardinals. The former MVP threw for 360 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions on his way to a 144.2 passer rating. That included two big-time throws.

Defensive spotlight: Chris Jones showed why some consider him the best interior defensive lineman outside of Aaron Donald. On 30 pass-rushing snaps, Jones tallied five pressures and a 23.7% pass-rush win rate. He also batted a pass in the process.

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS 24, LAS VEGAS RAIDERS 19
Rookie spotlight: Rookies saw significant snaps for both teams along the offensive line. Zion Johnson played all game at guard for the Chargers, giving up a couple of pressures but performing well as a pass-blocker overall. Dylan Parham started at right guard for the Raiders but didn’t see out the game. Las Vegas shuffled multiple times on the offensive line.

The "Glee" star's turn as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl" earned her four standing ovations before intermission, according to Deadline. She was celebrated again at the final curtain, with Michele and co-star Tovah Feldshuh accepting bouquets of white roses.

Feldshuh plays Mrs. Brice in the production.

In the audience was Michele's former "Spring Awakening" co-star Jonathan Groff, "Glee creator" Ryan Murphy and actor Zachary Quinto.

Michele would often reference "Funny Girl" during her time on "Glee," with her character Rachel Berry belting out "Don't Rain on My Parade," "I'm the Greatest Star" and "People" from the musical.

"Funny Girl" last featured "Booksmart" actor Beanie Feldstein in the title role.

Feldstein left "Funny Girl" two months early after it was announced she was being replaced by Michele, saying she was following the decision to "take the show in a different direction."

Lea Michele Earns Multiple Standing Ovations After Finally Taking Over ‘Funny Girl’ On Broadway

Lea Michele earned widespread praise for her first performance as Fanny Brice in the musical Funny Girl on Broadway Tuesday night, according to multiple reports, after the Glee actress controversially took over the role from Beanie Feldstein after years of publicly angling for the part.

Audience members were “buzzing” over Michele’s first performance, according to accounts on Twitter and in multiple news reports, with one eyewitness telling E! News, “The audience was losing their minds at pretty much anything Lea did.”

Michele received at least six standing ovations during the performance, according to People, including four in the first act of the show alone.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy and actor Jonathan Groff, Michele’s close friend, were among the celebrities present in the audience Tuesday, Variety reports, adding Groff “looked positively ecstatic” when Michele was onstage and “[sobbed] at various points.”

Michele also reportedly received “laughter and gasps” from the audience when her character says at one point, “I hadn’t read many books,” given the wild conspiracy theory alleging the actress can’t read.

“She's the greatest star alright,” one fan said at the theater about Michele, People reports, while Harvey Fierstein, who updated the musical’s book, was overheard telling a friend, “I haven't had a night like this in the theater in years.”

Actress Tovah Feldshuh also stepped into the show Tuesday as Michele’s mother—replacing her former Glee co-star Jane Lynch—with New York Post critic Johnny Olekinski reporting Feldshuh is the “funniest girl” in the show and “a marvel.”

“Michele is ready to go. She’s revved up and performs like she’s been belting ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ in the shower every day for 10 years,” Olekinski wrote in the Post. “Together with the titanic Feldshuh, the Glee star lifts this wanting production into something much more palatable than it was back in the spring.”

While a number of publications sent reporters to Michele’s first performance, critics will be formally invited to come back and review the show in a few weeks, according to the Post and Deadline.

Some small changes were made to this production of Funny Girl after Feldstein departed the show and was replaced with Michele, who’s more of a singer than her predecessor. The production added in the song “I’d Rather Be Blue Over You” for Michele, which the actual Fanny Brice sang in the 1928 film My Man and Barbra Streisand performed in the film adaptation of Funny Girl in 1968, but was not previously part of the stage show.

This production of Funny Girl marks the first time the show has been revived on Broadway since its initial production in 1964, which was best remembered for making Streisand a star. Feldstein originated the role of Fanny Brice in the production but garnered controversy when her performances yielded largely negative reviews and was snubbed by the Tony Awards, with Funny Girl only picking up one nomination for supporting actor Jared Grimes. Though Feldstein was supposed to stay with the production for a year after it opened in April, it was announced in June that she would depart on September 25—and then in July that she would actually leave even sooner, on July 31, with Michele replacing her. Michele has publicly expressed her desire to play Brice since at least 2014 and was previously in talks to remount the show with Murphy, but the actress has more recently generated widespread controversy due to allegations she mistreated her ex-cast mates. Glee actress Samantha Ware accused Michele of making her work on the show “a living hell” and other actors made similar accusations, and Michele lost sponsorship deals and stayed out of the public spotlight for years as a result. She then returned to the screen this year in a documentary on Spring Awakening, which Michele starred in on Broadway from 2006 to 2008. Michele has apologized for the alleged harm she’s caused her castmates, and told the New York Times this month the allegations “prompted an ‘intense time of reflection’” for her and she “really understand[s] the importance and value now of being a leader.”

While checking his phone after getting back to the locker room, he spotted a tweet from LeBron James about what he had just done.

Alongside a video of the match's final moments posted by the tournament's account, James wrote, "CONGRATS Young King!!! You earned it!" Tiafoe couldn't believe it.

"Man, I was losing it in the locker room," Tiafoe told reporters later while laughing. "Bro, I was going crazy."

Jessica Pegula to face No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek in US Open quarterfinals

NEW YORK -- Iga Swiatek covered her head with a white towel during one changeover after falling behind by a set and a break in the US Open's fourth round Monday. She kept making mistakes, then rolling her eyes or glaring in the direction of her guest box.

Eventually, Swiatek got her strokes straightened out and began playing more like someone who is ranked No. 1, moving into her first quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows by coming back to beat Jule Niemeier 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in Louis Armstrong Stadium.

"I'm just proud," Swiatek said, "that I didn't lose hope."

The 21-year-old from Poland will face another first-time US Open quarterfinalist next. That's No. 8 seed Jessica Pegula, the highest-ranked American woman, who advanced earlier Monday with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova in a match interrupted by rain for 45 minutes during the third game because the retractable roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium was not closed when a drizzle became a downpour.

Pegula called it "a little frustrating," saying it was particularly tough "at the start of the match, when there's no feeling of what's going on. You're just sitting there in limbo, not sure what to do."

The U.S. Tennis Association said in a statement that its "weather team" told US Open organizers there was no rain expected. The statement added: "Unfortunately, a pop-up sunshower occurred."

Later Monday, two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka lost 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-2 to two-time major finalist Karolina Pliskova, who advances to face No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka. Pliskova, a former world No. 1, was the runner-up at the US Open in 2016 and at Wimbledon in 2021.

Pliskova has returned to form in Flushing Meadows after a broken right wrist forced her to miss the Australian Open and she struggled in her first few tournaments when she returned to action.

In the night session, Sabalenka bounced back from a slow start and visits from the trainer to outlast No. 19 seed Danielle Collins 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Sabalenka continued her mastery at Flushing Meadows over Collins, beating her for the third time at the US Open (2018 and 2021). She led 4-3 in the second set when she needed a medical timeout. Sabalenka had a trainer massage her left thigh, and it continued throughout breaks in the match. Sabalenka, an Open semifinalist in 2021, said at her on-court interview she was fine.

Sabalenka at one point complained to the chair umpire about noise from the fans -- and again, there were plenty of them inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. The U.S. Open has attracted a record 549,657 fans since the main draw started last Monday. It's the highest attendance for the tournament through its first eight days. The previous record was 540,333, set in 2019.

She even changed her racket -- which she said was "super loose" -- in the midst of the second set. It didn't bother her too much. She had 38 winners.

Sabalenka, who is from Belarus, was not allowed to play at Wimbledon this year after all players from her country and Russia were banned because of the invasion of Ukraine.

Pegula, a 28-year-old who was born in New York and whose parents own the NFL's Buffalo Bills and NHL's Buffalo Sabres, reeled off the last three games of Monday's opening set, which ended with a double fault by No. 21 Kvitova, and then the last six games after trailing 2-0 in the second.

This will be Pegula's third appearance in a major quarterfinal this season -- and third against the woman who led the rankings at the time. She lost to the since-retired Ash Barty at the Australian Open, which Barty ended up winning, then to Swiatek at the French Open, which Swiatek wound up winning for her second championship there.

"I just have to play within myself," Pegula said, "and play smart and be present."

Swiatek arrived in New York having gone just 4-4 since the end of a 37-match winning streak that carried her to six consecutive tournament titles. On Monday, she listened to her usual prematch playlist -- a mix of Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Gorillaz -- then came out flat as can be against Niemeier, who is ranked 108th but reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in July in just her second major tournament.

Niemeier was better in the first set. Far better. Swiatek produced only four winners and 13 unforced errors, got broken twice and never earned a single break point.

Then, just winning the second set to pull even was quite the struggle for Swiatek.

She got broken early and fell behind 2-1, which is when she draped herself with a towel. She seemed to be talking to herself under there.

Whatever went on, Swiatek immediately flipped things around with a three-game run to lead 4-2. Even after getting a chance to serve for that set at 5-3, she double-faulted to close that game.

Nothing, it seemed, would come easily on this muggy afternoon, with the temperature above 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.7 Celsius) and the humidity above 50%.

But Swiatek did break right back, helped by a wild forehand from Niemeier, and she let out a shout.

To a third set they went, and Swiatek completely cleaned up her act: The unforced error count was one for her and 14 for Niemeier. When it ended, Swiatek jumped and threw an uppercut and shook her right fist.

The women's field is guaranteed to have a first-time champion.

Actor Brendan Fraser received a six-minute standing ovation Sunday night at the Venice Film Festival, after making a comeback to the profession following personal struggles.

Fraser was attending the world premiere of The Whale, a movie in which he plays the lead character Charlie, an English teacher reconnecting with his teenage daughter.

Fraser was preparing to exit the stage when audience members and people onstage alongside him began a round of applause. He appeared to be in tears at the response.

Fraser had breakout roles in George of the Jungle (1997) and The Mummy (1999). He continued to star in sequels The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

The Mummy movies took a great physical toll on him, and he received multiple surgeries as a result of stunt work he did for the franchise. He underwent a laminectomy (a procedure to remove vertebrae from the spine), a partial knee replacement and vocal cord repair, he told GQ in 2018.

Fraser also said he wondered if he had been blacklisted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization that hosts the Golden Globes, after he alleged that a former HFPA president had groped him in 2003.

As video of the standing ovation circulated, Fraser received an outpouring of support online.

The Whale Misses the Mark

Director Darren Aronofsky and his star, Brendan Fraser, aim for empathy but come up short.

Darren Aronofsky has a thing for bodies in distress: agonized addicts in Requiem for a Dream, the strain and crack of Black Swan, mother!’s fraught pregnancy. And now there is The Whale, a lugubrious chamber drama that premiered here at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday. Adapted from Samuel D. Hunter’s 2012 play, The Whale is a story of a morbidly obese man, Charlie (Brendan Fraser), living out what might be his last days as his heart falters and his mind is lost to regret.

It’s tough stuff that unfolds pretty much in one room. Which doesn’t give Aronofsky much space for his usual visual panache. So, nearly all of that overeager energy is channeled through The Whale’s depiction of Charlie’s body, a prosthetic creation that Fraser wears like a cross on his shoulder. This is a mighty act of becoming, the film seems to insist—and also one of empathy. But what’s expressed instead is a kind of leering horror, a portrait of a man gone to catastrophic ruin so that we, in the audience, may tap into our nobler, higher minds and see the worthy human being beneath the frightful exterior.

That doesn’t feel anything like empathy. I trust that that intention was there, on both Aronofsky and Fraser’s parts, but their execution is turgid and ghastly. Nearly every time Charlie goes to take a bite of food, Aronofsky’s cues up Rob Simonsen’s unrelentingly bombastic score, plaintive and sinister strings indicating that something very, very bad—and scary—is happening. What might have been a somber and carefully considered study of a lonely man grappling with his past becomes a posturing labor.

Charlie lives alone in an apartment somewhere in Idaho. He’s a shut-in who earns a living teaching writing classes online, his camera turned off to shield himself from his students. (Or is it to shield them from him?) There is at least one caring friend in his life, Liz (Hong Chau), a nurse who tends to Charlie’s failing health with resigned concern. Charlie and Liz have a particularly close, sorrowful connection that is revealed later in the film, once Charlie and Liz’s fading little life together is interrupted by outsiders.

One is an Evangelical missionary, Thomas (Ty Simpkins), who bursts into Charlie’s world at an inopportune moment: Charlie has just finished masturbating to gay porn, with the video still playing on the laptop when he seizes up with chest pain. (Again, I see little empathy in the way this scene is framed and choreographed.) Thomas, seeing this heaving totem of misery, wants to save the dying Charlie’s soul, a witless effort toward a man who feels he’s past redemption—spiritually, morally, physically.

But maybe Charlie can at least patch things up with his teenage daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink), though the two have grown entirely estranged since Charlie walked out on his marriage (to Mary, played by Samantha Morton) to pursue a great love affair with a male student. That man, Alan, is now dead, which has become the defining tragedy of Charlie’s life—well, that and his tattered relationship with Ellie. As his end looms, Charlie tries desperately, sadly to reestablish a bond with Ellie, with an offer to set her up financially for the future.

Aronofsky can’t find a way to make all these character entrances and exits cinematic. He and Hunter, an often terrific playwright doing his own adapting here, won’t let go of the tricks and forms that work in live theater but are stilted and too presentational on camera. There is some easy naturalism in the film’s opening stretches, conversation that sounds familiar and credible. But the film works itself up into a self-conscious lather as it goes, building and building until people are just loudly declaring motivations at one another. With that overheated score blaring away, it’s almost as if Aronofsky is making a parody of hyper-serious fall-movie dramas, complete with a physical transformation at the center.

One roots for Fraser to succeed, despite the garishness of that transformation. He’s been a likable screen presence for decades now, capable of both affable winks of self-awareness and old-fashioned earnestness. But he’s lost here, overwhelmed by a task that seems almost designed to be intensely scrutinized and picked apart. When we do feel some of the innate sweetness that has always animated Fraser’s work, radiating through all these layers of effort, it’s usually because he’s acting opposite Chau, whose performance is the only thoughtfully calibrated thing in the film. Fraser and his other co-stars only threaten to tear down the delicate space that Chau creates and then must rebuild, scene after scene, throughout the movie.

The Whale is meant to be a poignant consideration of guilt, sexuality, religion, remorse. We really only know that, though, because the movie shouts it at us. Charlie, Ellie, and Mary are more avatars of ideas than true characters, which seems to suit Aronofsky’s vision of the story just fine. A coldness seeps into the picture from behind the camera, a calculating gaze that turns The Whale into a static (if extraordinarily loud) diorama of pain. Here’s Charlie, keening and pleading behind a pane of glass for all of us to sigh and pout and gawk at, before moving on to the next fleeting curiosity.

Two goals by Milan forward Rafael Leao helped the defending champions fight back from a goal down and earn a 3-2 win over local rivals Inter on Saturday in their fifth Serie A match of the season.

The victory briefly sent Milan to the top of the table before Napoli leapfrogged them with a 2-1, come-from-behind win at Lazio.

Tensions were running high as Milan defender Theo Hernandez and Inter midfielder Denzel Dumfries were handed yellow cards in the ninth minute after arguing following a collision.

Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic scored his first Serie A goal of the season in the 21st minute after an assist by forward Joaquin Correa following a brilliant counterattack orchestrated by forward Lautaro Martinez.

Milan, however, levelled seven minutes later through forward Rafael Leao, who slotted home past Inter keeper Samir Handanovic after collecting a pass from Sandro Tonali.

Stefano Pioli's side kept pressing but spurned a host of chances before the half-time whistle.

Milan forward Olivier Giroud completed the comeback in the 54th minute with a weak but effective strike as it caught Handanovic unprepared.

Leao scored his second goal after swiftly moving past the Inter defence and firing home in the 61st minute to extend the lead.

"Rafa has beautiful moves, plays beautifully, knows he has talent," Pioli told reporters.

Inter did not go down without a fight, however, and scored just seven minutes later through forward Edin Dzeko, whose strike bounced off the post and slipped in.

Milan keeper Mike Maignan delivered a superb performance, keeping out further efforts by Inter who kept pressing until the end but were denied an equaliser.

"We conceded three goals, something you cannot afford in a derby. For the chances we had we should have deserved a draw," Inter manager Simone Inzaghi told reporters.

"We struggled a lot to score two goals this evening, and then we found in front of us a great goalkeeper."

Pioli also said Milan should not have relaxed in the last 25 minutes and should be grateful to Maignan for not conceding another goal.

"Until the 70th minute I liked the team a lot, they played with courage and fought with great determination," he added.

Milan are second in the table on 11 points after five games and travel to Sampdoria next Saturday while Inter, sixth on nine points, host Torino on the same day.

AC Milan vs. Inter Milan result: Rafael Leao sparkles as champions hold on for derby win

Rafael Leao scored twice and set up another as AC Milan claimed victory in the Derby della Madonnina despite a second-half fightback by Inter Milan.

Simone Inzaghi's side took the lead against the run of play after 21 minutes when Marcelo Brozovic burst through the opposition defence to roll a finish past AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

However, defending Serie A champions AC Milan responded quickly and restored parity through Leao, who found the far corner of the net after Inter conceded possession cheaply in the middle of the pitch.

AC Milan continued to dominate and took the lead nine minutes into the second half with Olivier Giroud guiding a shot past Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic after good work by Leao down the left.

And Leao scored a classic Milan derby goal to make it 3-1 to the hosts, beating his man with a wonderful piece of skill before sliding the finish into the far corner.

This forced Inzaghi into a series of changes and Edin Dzeko made an immediate impact off the bench, finishing from a Matteo Darmian cross to give Inter hope of a comeback.

But AC Milan held on to leapfrog their rivals and inflict a second defeat of the season on Inter.

Wilson agreed to terms on a five-year, $245 million extension with the Denver Broncos, including $165 million guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday, per sources.

The quarterback had two seasons remaining on his deal signed in Seattle, so the extension ties him to Denver for the next seven years.

After shelling out players and draft picks to acquire Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks in March, the plan was always to extend Wilson. Sides waited for the new Walton-Penner ownership group to be approved and weigh in before striking the long-term contract.

The $49 million per year in new money on the five-year extension puts Wilson right behind back-to-back MVP Aaron Rodgers ($50.3 million) and ahead of Kyler Murray($46.1 million). But the $165 million guaranteed falls short of Deshaun Watson's fully guaranteed $230 million deal.

After a decade in Seattle under Pete Carroll's ground-first approach, Wilson now takes over in Denver under former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Expectations have soared a Mile High in Denver since acquiring Wilson, who helped generate 10-plus wins in eight of his 10 seasons in Seattle.

As the prettiest deep-ball thrower in the NFL, Wilson will help open up a restricted Broncos offense, and it's his opportunity to prove he can win while cooking.

With two years left on Wilson's deal, the Broncos could have hedged and let the 2022 season play out before determining if a big extension made sense. Instead, they backed up their all-in play and their belief that the 33-year-old is the missing piece to their playoff puzzle.

Wilson returns to Seattle in Week 1 with a new team and a new whopper of a contract.

Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos agree to 5-year extension worth $245 million, including $165 million guaranteed, sources say

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- From the moment the Denver Broncos landed Russell Wilson in a franchise-altering trade this past March, general manager George Paton insisted that the team's goal was to sign the star quarterback to a long-term extension.

Paton and the Broncos achieved that goal Thursday, agreeing with Wilson on a five-year, $245 million extension that includes $165 million in guaranteed money, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The megadeal is the third-most lucrative contract in NFL history in terms of guaranteed money, behind only Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson's $230 million and Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray's $189.5 million.

Wilson, 33, is now under contract with the Broncos through the 2028 season for $296 million. The extension pays Wilson, who has two years remaining on his previous deal signed with the Seahawks, an average salary of $49 million. He is set to make $24 million this season and $27 million next year before the extension kicks in.

Wilson, entering his 11th NFL season, previously echoed Paton's hopes for a long-term deal with Denver, saying at the start of training camp that he wanted to be with the Broncos "for a long, long time, hopefully the rest of my career."

The Broncos traded five draft picks, including two first-round and two second-round selections, and three players to the Seahawks to acquire Wilson in March -- seeking stability and stardom at quarterback, a problem spot since Peyton Manning's retirement in 2016.

The formal arrival of the franchise's new ownership group -- the Walton-Penner group, led by Walmart heir Rob Walton -- only enhanced the Broncos' chances of getting the deal done with Wilson. The group's $4.65 billion purchase of the Broncos was formally approved Aug. 9 by the NFL owners.

The group -- which includes Walton's daughter, Carrie Walton Penner, son-in-law Greg Penner, Mellody Hobson, Condoleezza Rice and Lewis Hamilton -- is the wealthiest ownership group in the NFL.

Penner, now the Broncos' CEO, recently said it was "critical to have a great quarterback in this league, and coming in this organization with Russell in place is a tremendous benefit for us."

Wilson, who has said that he intends to play 10 to 15 more years, said the ownership group excited him for the team's future because of its "energy" and "commitment to winning."

Wilson's 292 career touchdown passes are the second most in league history for a quarterback in his first 10 NFL seasons, behind only Manning's 306. Tom Brady (324) and Aaron Rodgers (317) are the only two players with more touchdown passes than Wilson over the past 10 years.

Wilson, who quarterbacked the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl title in franchise history -- beating the Broncos after the 2014 season in Super Bowl XLVIII -- also has been a consistent winner in his NFL career. His 113 wins as a starting quarterback (regular season and postseason combined) are the most for any NFL player in his first 10 seasons.

Wilson's Broncos debut will be a homecoming on Sept. 12, when Denver visits Seattle on Monday Night Football.

The Broncos have not been to the playoffs since their Super Bowl 50 win and have had a turnstile behind center, with 10 different starting quarterbacks over the past six seasons. An 11th player -- running back Phillip Lindsay -- started a game in 2020 when the Broncos were without three quarterbacks, including then-starter Drew Lock, because of COVID-19 protocol violations.

16:23 Philadelphia Eagles: It’s the end of an era for Jalen Reagor

After two seasons with a few bright spots but far more disappointment, Jalen Reagor’s run with the Philadelphia Eagles is done, as the former first-round pick out of TCU has been traded to Minnesota for a 2023 seventh-round pick and a 2024 conditional fourth-round pick.

Surprising? You bet; while Reagor went from the Eagles’ WR3 to WR5 before camp even began due to the additions of A.J. Brown and Zach Pascal, he still received a ton of praise from both Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni for his efforts in training camp and ultimately made the initial 53-man roster over the likes of Deon Cain, Britain Covey, and Devin Allen. Still, once that trio all remained unsigned following the initial waiver wire period – Cain, as a vested vet, was never subjected to waivers – Roseman circled back to previous conversations about a Reagor trade with the Vikings and ultimately hammered out a deal.

On paper, getting back roughly comparable draft value for Reagor that Roseman gave up to acquire Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is pretty incredible; CJGJ is a certified baller who brings a sort of Allen Iverson-esque attitude to the field that will instantly make him a fan favorite at the back end of the defense. Still, it’s hard to look back on what Reagor was supposed to be and wonder why, oh why, he was unable to get there.

Jalen Reagor was supposed to be a long-time player for the Philadelphia Eagles.

When the Philadelphia Eagles drafted Reagor 21st overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, it felt important.

Sure, some, including the Vikings’ front office, immediately questioned the decision considering LSU’s Justin Jefferson was still on the board, but recall, if you will, where the Eagles were at that particular time; after drafting their X wide receiver of the future the previous year in the now-similarly traded JJ Arcega-Whiteside, the Eagles had a need for speed. They’d tried and failed to land the next DeSean Jackson since they said goodbye to the genuine article all the way back in the spring of 2014, and even after re-acquiring him in 2019, it was clear his health wasn’t going to be a 70 targets per season sort of player again.

In Reagor, the Eagles saw an opportunity to add straight-line speed, explosivity, and a dynamic athlete who could turn nothing into something during his run at TCU. Though opinions at the time were mixed on Reagor’s exact on-field projections, with PFF being particularly high on his abilities whereas Lance Zierlein of NFL.com considered him more of a fringe first-rounder, the general consensus was that Reagor had all of the tools to be the next great offensive weapon who could move across formations and attack defenses in a variety of different veins.

As comical as it may sound now, the idea of Reagor being used like Deebo Samuel was discussed by more than a few fans, and even if the two receivers don’t exactly have identical athletic measurables, surely a savvy offensive mind like Doug Pederson could deploy the former like the latter if he wanted to.

Unfortunately, it just never clicked.

While Reagor’s career started off with a bang, with the collegiate Horned Frog going for 55 yards in Week 1 and 41 yards in Week 2, he suffered a ligament tear in his thumb that resulted in a trip to IR and even after he returned, his game was just never the same. Reagor went from averaging 48 yards per game pre-injury to 33.3 over the final nine weeks of the season and finished out the year with a disappointing 396 receiving yards.

Fast forward to 2021, and things were supposed to be different; Nick Sirianni was supposed to be an offensive guru who specialized at wide receiver due to his own experience with the position. With DeVonta Smith in place at WR1 and fellow 2020 draft pick Quez Watkins providing speed out of the slot, it was only a matter of time before Reagor could feast on foes from a greater position of strength.

… except that didn’t really happen either. No, Reagor’s efficiency numbers dropped pretty much across the board, and he finished out the season with 97 fewer yards than the season prior. Sirianni tried him both in the slot and on the outside, and Reagor was even afforded a chance to return kicks and punts for Michael Clay’s special teams unit, but regardless of what opportunity was afforded to him, it never quite worked out.

Whether Roseman wanted to admit it or not, Reagor was never going to work out in Philadelphia, and keeping him around for another season was just going to lower his value and hurt his morale even more.

Look, saying goodbye is never easy; people make concessions and excuses for why things aren’t working instead of addressing the problem head-on, and will oftentimes stick around in a situation out of obligation even when it’s against their best interests. While the Philadelphia Eagles could have kept Reagor around for one more season and hoped that he would magically have a Nelson Agholor-esque come-up in Year 3 while deployed from the slot, it’s honestly better for all parties involved to move on now and finally look to the future instead of wrestling with a past regret of what could have been.

19:37 Jeff Garlin’s Character on ‘The Goldbergs’ Killed Off for Season 10

When fans of “The Goldbergs” tune into the ABC sitcom’s 10th season this fall, Jeff Garlin’s patriarch Murray will have already been dead for months.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop unveiled how “The Goldbergs” will deal with Garlin’s messy departure from the series midway through its ninth season. Garlin’s exit was a “mutual agreement” between himself and Sony Pictures Television following an HR investigation into his on-set behavior, which the actor chalked up to “silliness.”

Premiering Sept. 21, Season 10 also introduce a new member to the family, as newlyweds Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff (Sam Lerner) have their first child.

“This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that,” Barnow said. “So we’re starting with optimism about a baby coming and looking forward to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving.”

Bishop added: “It honestly feels like a huge reboot for us. So we have tons of momentum rolling into this new season.”

“The family has already grieved, unlike Pops [George Segal] and the premiere of Season 9 where they’re dealing with it sort of very freshly,” Barnow said. “Jeff [Garlin] won’t be in the series this year, and so far the stories have been largely about looking forward rather than looking back.”

Asked whether Garlin is aware that his character is being killed off, Barnow said: I’ve had a conversation with Jeff and he’s aware that he’s not being replaced. The truth is, I don’t know if he knows what his fate is, but I’m assuming he knows, would be the answer to that question. We haven’t had a subsequent conversation since the beginning of writing that he would have any specific clarity on that.”

Detailing Season 10, the showrunners said that viewers will be seeing more of Pop-Pop (Judd Hirsch), as Murray’s death brings the family closer. They also teased that David Hasselhoff will play himself in a guest spot.

Season 10 will mark the first time Garlin is completely absent from “The Goldbergs” throughout its nine year run on the network. The series was filming the 15th and 16th episodes of its 22-episode Season 9 when Garlin was suddenly off the show due to the allegations. However, the star still appeared through off-camera dialogue pulled from earlier episodes and unused takes, as well as previously shot images. During that time, Garlin was still getting paid for his work on the show.

Garlin had previously addressed the allegations against him in an interview with Vanity Fair, saying, “Well, to be honest with you, there is no story. We have a difference of opinion, Sony and myself.”

He continued: “My opinion is, I have my process about how I’m funny, in terms of the scene and what I have to do. They feel that it makes for a quote ‘unsafe’ workspace. Now, mind you, my silliness making an unsafe workspace — I don’t understand how that is… I am always a kind and thoughtful person. I make mistakes, sure. But my comedy is about easing people’s pain. Why would I ever want to cause pain in anybody for a laugh? That’s bullying. That’s just uncalled for.”

Days after that interview was published, Garlin left “The Goldbergs” by mutual agreement.

“It honestly feels like a huge reboot for us,” co-showrunner Chris Bishop said of the upcoming season.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Chris Bishop and Alex Barnow explained how they wrote Garlin’s Murray Goldberg, the patriarch of the Goldberg family, out of the show. The latest season of “The Goldbergs” is set to debut nearly a year after Garlin departed the program following a human-resources investigation into his behavior on set.

"[Garlin is] not going to be on the season, obviously,” Barnow told Entertainment Weekly in a Q&A published Tuesday.

"[Murray] will have passed, and we are sort of starting from a place of multiple months removed from his death. The family has already grieved. ... This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that. ... It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving. But Jeff won’t be in the series this year, and so far the stories have been largely about looking forward rather than looking back.”

Barnow added that he has informed Garlin that “he’s not being replaced” by another actor.

“I don’t know if he knows what his fate is, but I’m assuming he knows,” the writer and executive producer said. “We haven’t had a subsequent conversation since the beginning of writing that he would have any specific clarity on that.”

In December 2021, Vanity Fair reported that Garlin had allegedly engaged in a pattern of verbal and physical conduct that made some of his co-workers uncomfortable behind the scenes of “The Goldbergs.”

He was accused of behaving in a demeaning or unprofessional manner, as well as using language that some considered inappropriate and degrading to women. Garlin also reportedly touched or hugged people on set regardless of whether they were comfortable with it.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Garlin described his on-set behavior as “silliness,” while acknowledging that he can be a “loose canon” at work. He chalked the HR investigation up to “a difference of opinion” between him and the production company, Sony Pictures Television.

BAGHDAD -- Armed supporters of a powerful Iraqi cleric who clashed with security forces in the capital began to withdraw from the streets Tuesday, restoring a measure of calm after a serious escalation of the nation's political crisis.

Following two days of deadly unrest that sparked fears instability might spread throughout the country and even the region, cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, 48, told his supporters to leave the government quarter where they had rallied. Within minutes, some could be seen heeding the call, dismantling their tents and walking out of the area known as the Green Zone.

The cleric's supporters packed up their belongings and trucks ferried away bundled up mattresses. Mounds of trash littered thoroughfares and the steps leading up to Iraq's parliament building. A portrait of al-Sadr waving was placed against a tree as his followers rolled up carpets, tea glasses and the remnants of their four-week sit-in.

Iraq’s military also announced the lifting of a nationwide curfew, further raising hopes that the immediate crisis was ebbing, though the larger political crisis remained unresolved. Al-Sadr's move to de-escalate tensions raised questions of how issues such as the dissolution of parliament and the holding of early elections will be handled between rival groups.

Protesters supporting al-Sadr's rivals also withdrew from their demonstration outside the government zone.

Iraq’s government has been deadlocked since al-Sadr’s party won the largest share of seats in October parliamentary elections but not enough to secure a majority government. That led to months of political infighting between al-Sadr's Shiite followers and his Iran-backed Shiite rivals before it became violent Monday.

The chaos began when al-Sadr announced he would resign from politics. Many dismissed the move as a ploy to gain greater leverage, and his supporters stormed the Green Zone, once the stronghold of the U.S. military and now home to Iraqi government offices and foreign embassies. They eventually breached the gates of the government palace, rushing into its lavish salons and marbled halls.

On Tuesday, his followers could be seen on live television firing both machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades into the heavily-fortified Green Zone, while security forces sporadically returned fire and armored tanks lined up. Some bystanders filmed the gunfight with their mobile phones, though most hid behind walls, wincing when rounds cracked nearby.

At least 30 people were killed, officials said, before al-Sadr urged those loyal to him to go home, following pleas for restraint from several Iraqi officials and the United Nations.

“This is not a revolution,” the cleric said in a televised address.

Al-Sadr, who spurred his followers to storm the parliament in July with calls for revolution and reform, apologized to the Iraqi people and said he could not support the violence.

The immediate shift on the streets underscored his enduring control over his loyalists, and by extension his influence over the Iraqi political class.

In addition to the dozens killed, over 400 were wounded, two Iraqi medical officials said Tuesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release the information to journalists.

In a sign of the fear that the unrest would spread, Iran closed its borders to Iraq earlier Tuesday, though even before al-Sadr’s order, streets beyond the capital’s government quarter largely remained calm. The country’s vital oil continued to flow, with global benchmark Brent crude trading slightly down.

Later on Tuesday, Iran resumed flights to Iraq, Iranian state TV reported.

Members of Iraq's majority Shiite Muslim population were oppressed when Saddam Hussein ruled the country for decades. The 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam, a Sunni, reversed the political order. Just under two-thirds of Iraq is Shiite, with a third Sunni.

Now, the Shiites are fighting among themselves, with those backed by Iran and those who consider themselves Iraqi nationalists jockeying for power, influence and state resources.

It’s an explosive rivalry in a country where many are wary of the Iranian government’s influence even though trade and ties between people remain strong. Iraq and Iran fought a bloody war in the 1980s that saw a million people killed.

Al-Sadr’s nationalist rhetoric and reform agenda resonates powerfully with his supporters, who largely hail from Iraq’s poorest sectors of society and were historically shut out of the political system under Saddam.

Al-Sadr's initial announcement that he would leave politics implicitly gave his supporters the freedom to act as they see fit. His speech on Tuesday, effectively reined them back in.

Before that, the unrest led neighboring countries to issue warnings to their citizens and one embassy closed.

In addition to closing its borders, Iran urged its citizens to avoid any travel to the neighboring country, citing the unrest. The decision came as millions prepared to visit Iraq for an annual pilgrimage to Shiite sites.

Kuwait, which shares a 254-kilometer- (158-mile-) long border with Iraq, called on its citizens to leave the neighboring country. The state-run KUNA news agency also encouraged those hoping to travel to Iraq to delay their plans.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a security alert for U.S. citizens urging them to avoid the Green Zone and other areas where demonstrations are occurring as well as a Do Not Travel advisory.

The Netherlands evacuated its embassy in the Green Zone, Foreign Affairs Minister Wopke Hoekstra tweeted early Tuesday.

“There are firefights around the embassy in Baghdad. Our staff are now working at the German embassy elsewhere in the city,” Hoekstra wrote.

Dubai's long-haul carrier Emirates stopped flights to Baghdad on Tuesday. The carrier said that it was “monitoring the situation closely.” It did not say when flights would resume.

19:47 Today's Artemis I launch has been scrubbed after engine issue

Kennedy Space Center, Florida (CNN)The launch of NASA's historic Artemis I moon mission has been postponed after the team was unable to work through an issue with one of the rocket's four engines.

The next opportunity to send the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft on their journey is September 2, but whether or not another attempt is made that day depends on how testing goes.

"Launch controllers were continuing to evaluate why a bleed test to get the RS-25 engines on the bottom of the core stage to the proper temperature range for liftoff was not successful, and ran out of time in the two-hour launch window," according to an update from NASA. "Engineers are continuing to gather additional data."

The launch team still needs to troubleshoot the engine issue and will keep the rocket in its current configuration to gather data and assess what needs to be done. Both the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, sitting on Launchpad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, remain stable, according to NASA officials.

Prior to the scrub, the countdown was extended into an unplanned hold as the launch team worked on a troubleshooting plan for one of the rocket's four engines.

That's because the launch team discovered an issue with an engine bleed in engine #3. Attempts to reconfigure it were unsuccessful.

During engine bleeds, hydrogen is cycled through the engine to condition it for launch. Three of the four engines are performing as expected, but engine #3 experienced an issue.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson addressed the scrub shortly after it was announced, stressing that Artemis I is a test flight.

"We don't launch until it's right," Nelson said. "They've got a problem with the gases going on the engine bleed on one engine. It's just illustrative that this is a very complicated machine, a very complicated system, and all those things have to work. You don't light the candle until it's ready to go."

It's something Nelson has personal experience with. As an astronaut, he was on the 24th flight of the Space Shuttle. It was scrubbed four times on the pad and the fifth try resulted in a flawless mission.

"Had we launched on any one of those scrubs, it wouldn't have been a good day," he said.

More information will be shared in a news conference in about four hours, according to NASA.

Weather conditions remained 80% favorable for a launch at the beginning of a window that opened at 8:33 a.m. ET. But several issues cropped up after the rocket began fueling after midnight.

Offshore storms with the potential for lightning prevented the team from beginning the fueling process, due to start at midnight, for about an hour.

The hold was lifted at 1:13 a.m. ET, and the tanking process began to load the rocket's core stage with supercold liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

The team stopped filling the tank with liquid hydrogen twice due to an initial leak as well as a pressure spike, but tanking resumed for the core stage and began for the upper stage, or the interim cryogenic propulsion stage.

The team also discovered a line of frost on the inner stage flange. At first, engineers thought the frost may indicate the presence of a crack in the tank, but it turned out to be a crack in the external foam. The team shared that the issue hds been resolved since the foam crack did not indicate a leak.

While the passenger list doesn't include any humans, it does have passengers: three mannequins and a plush Snoopy toy will ride in Orion.

The crew aboard Artemis I may sound a little unusual, but they each serve a purpose. Snoopy will serve as the zero gravity indicator -- meaning that he will begin to float inside the capsule once it reaches the space environment.

The mannequins, named Commander Moonkin Campos, Helga and Zohar, will measure deep space radiation future crews could experience and test a new suit and shielding technology. A biology experiment carrying seeds, algae, fungi and yeast is tucked inside Orion to measure how life reacts to this radiation as well.

Liverpool equaled the Premier League's record for the biggest victory on Saturday, beating Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield.

Having begun the season with two draws and a defeat, Liverpool started rapidly against newly-promoted Bournemouth, Luis Díaz and Harvey Elliott both scoring inside six minutes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's stunning long-range strike made it three inside half an hour, before goals from Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk meant Liverpool led by five at half time.

After the break, an own goal from Chris Mepham, Firmino's second, Fabio Carvalho's first Liverpool goal and Díaz's second of the game capped off a goal-ridden afternoon for the hosts.

The record nine-goal margin of victory had been achieved three times before -- twice by Manchester United and once by Leicester City -- and helps kickstart Liverpool's stuttering opening to the new season.

For Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, he called it a "perfect football afternoon" after a few weeks of poor results, saying the big win was "needed."

"We were not happy with the way we played; we had good moments in nearly all the games," Klopp said. "We showed things which we are strong at and other things where we have to improve and that's what we had to do today, but you cannot make a list and take them all off the list step by step.

"You just have to give the game a proper direction and that's why I loved the start today so much. Bouncing back

After two trophies last season and coming so close to two more, hopes are high for Liverpool this season.

And those flames were only fanned in the season-opening Community Shield against Manchester City, as Liverpool comfortably beat the reigning Premier League champions.

However, when the season finally kicked off, results have been stuttering.

It opened with a battling draw against newly-promoted Fulham before having to settle for a draw at home with Crystal Palace -- star new signing Darwin Nunez was also sent off in his home debut for a headbutt on Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen.

And things went from bad to worse with a stunning 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in its third game, with its bitter rivals coming into to the game off the back of a terrible start to the season.

Just when issues looked to be piling up, Liverpool answered in emphatic fashion.

Brazil international Firmino was instrumental all afternoon, with two goals and three assists. Klopp said the 30-year-old had a "massive game" against Bournemouth.

Liverpool achieved a club first in the first half by scoring five goals in the opening 45 minutes, the first time that's happened in a Premier League game for the Reds.

In reaching the nine-goal winning margin, Liverpool matched the record set by Manchester United against Ipswich in 1995 and Southampton last year, and by Leicester against Southampton in 2019.

According to Opta, it also matched Liverpool's biggest margin of victory in its league history, equaling the record set against Crystal Palace in 1989 and Rotherham Town in 1896.

After a disappointing result against Manchester United last time out, Klopp expressed his delight at his side's ability to bounce back emphatically against Bournemouth.

"This game was us, a little bit more us. We should have won this game, so when I don't say that about all games against United ... we lost against them in different circumstances," he said.

Klopp continued: "But it's not out of this world that we lose at United 2-1, especially when we don't perform on our highest level, that can happen and it's very likely to happen. For today I wanted the start we showed and then the rest ... we cannot give guarantees for results, but what we expect from ourselves is that we give guarantees for performance levels and today we started."

Liverpool vs Bournemouth: Klopp’s nine-star Cherry stomp

Roberto Firmino had two goals and three assists as Liverpool’s inevitable return to the win column was an emphatic 9-0 clattering of hopeless Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds demolished the Cherries in a juicing that began after three minutes and didn’t let up as a 5-0 halftime lead was nearly doubled despite a series of subs that introduced several teenagers and was without a half-dozen injured Liverpool stars.

What we learned from Liverpool vs Bournemouth
Liverpool is inevitable: Picking the Reds to win this was far from a longshot but getting an eyeful of Liverpool at its brightest was a reminder the rest of the league needed following a pair of unlucky draws and an entitled loss to Manchester United. Was there ever a single doubt that Klopp would awaken the club’s trophy quest?

Bournemouth can’t hang: The win against Aston Villa just looks so critical right now. While no one was expecting much from a run of Man City, Arsenal, and Liverpool, the Cherries have just done so little in delivering a combined 16-0 score line against their top-six foes.

Roberto Firmino begs a question: Jurgen Klopp has preferred to go in several other directions at center forward over the past season-plus, but Firmino was all over the pitch as the focal point of this dismantling of Bournemouth. Darwin Nunez is a stud and several Reds can serve as a false nine, but unless the Reds need Firmino as a piece in a swap deal, might Klopp be better served keeping the Brazilian at Anfield.

Liverpool could be without as many as seven first- or second-choice players on Saturday, with the centers of defense and midfield decimated by injuries. Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip, who are expected to spend all season in a three-man rotation with Virgil van Dijk, are both out. Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita, for both of whom injuries have marred their respective Liverpool careers, bring something very different to the midfield, but they could both be out just the same. To compound those issues, Fabinho was also dropped from the starting lineup for the game at Old Trafford before coming on for Jordan Henderson on the hour mark. 36-year-old James Milner also started alongside 19-year-old Harvey Elliott.

As for Bournemouth, the opening day of the season was good fun as the Cherries beat Aston Villa 2-0, before taking back-to-back bludgeonings at the hands of Manchester City (4-0) and Arsenal (3-0). Obviously, the fixture makers haven’t let up on Bournemouth, who will have faced half of the big-six sides just four games into the season at the final whistle on Saturday.

The early prognosis for Darnold, according to ESPN’s David Newton, is a high-ankle sprain. If that is indeed the case for the 25-year-old, such an injury would typically take four to six weeks to heal.

Darnold missed five games last year, in his first season with the Panthers, upon fracturing his right shoulder blade in a 24-6 loss to the New England Patriots. That caused the team to go out and sign Cam Newton—a prospect that was once again mentioned to head coach Matt Rhule following the Friday’s exhibition outing.

This time, however, the Panthers seem firmly set on allowing Baker Mayfield to be their guy under center. Mayfield impressed in his second serving of preseason work, completing nine of his 15 throws for 89 yards and two touchdowns on the Bills’ second-team defense.

ESPN's Adam Schefter Has Injury Update For Sam Darnold

During Friday night's preseason showdown between the Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers, backup quarterback Sam Darnold suffered an ankle injury.

Darnold had to be carted off the field in the third quarter. The replay of his injury was hard to watch.

Even though it looked as if Darnold suffered a devastating ankle injury, the latest update on his status is encouraging.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Darnold is dealing with a high ankle sprain. He'll undergo an MRI this Saturday to determine the severity of the sprain.

Usually, players miss around four to six weeks with a high ankle sprain.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule was unwilling to share a timetable for Darnold's return.

"We'll have to wait and see,'' Rhule said, via ESPN. "Sam's a tough kid. He usually comes back really quickly. I'd say nothing's off the table.''

Darnold is expected to be the backup quarterback for the Panthers this season. Baker Mayfield, meanwhile, will be the starter.

With Matt Corral already out for the season with a Lisfranc injury, the Panthers can't really afford to lose another quarterback for an extended period of time.

Carolina quarterback Sam Darnold was carted off the field after sustaining a left ankle injury in the third quarter of the Panthers’ preseason finale against the visiting Buffalo Bills on Friday. The injury to Darnold provides a headache for the Panthers, who last week lost another quarterback, rookie third-round draft pick Matt Corral, to a foot injury that will keep him out all year.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule said postgame that he heard from his medical staff that it “sounds like it’s not a fracture” but that Darnold would undergo further testing.

Darnold was in the process of throwing an incomplete pass when Bills defensive tackle C.J. Brewer pulled the quarterback down, causing Darnold’s left ankle to twist unnaturally under Brewer’s weight.

The injury ends a preseason in which Darnold lost a battle for the Panthers’ starting job to Baker Mayfield.

All on Mayfield as Panthers prepare for Week 1

On Friday, Mayfield played Carolina’s first four offensive series, throwing two touchdown passes. He completed 9 of 15 passes for 89 yards.

Darnold entered in the second quarter and connected on 5 of 11 passes for 49 yards. He also ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

The Panthers led 21-0 at the time of Darnold’s exit, and that proved to be the final score.

Darnold, 25, broke into the NFL with the New York Jets, who made him the third overall pick in the 2018 draft out of Southern California. He went 13-25 in three years as the Jets’ primary starter, then was traded to Carolina in April 2021.

Last season, Darnold finished 4-7 as a starter for the Panthers, connecting on 59.9 percent of his passes for 2,527 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 overall games.

In 50 career NFL games (49 starts), Darnold has a 59.8 percent completion rate for 10,624 yards, 54 touchdowns and 52 interceptions.

SAM DARNOLD SUFFERS SIGNIFICANT INJURY: REPORT

Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold might miss some time after suffering an injury Friday night.

During the 21-0 preseason win over the Buffalo Bills, the young QB suffered an ankle injury during the third quarter and had to be carted off.

ESPN reported late Friday night it’s believed Darnold, who lost the QB battle to Baker Mayfield, has a high ankle sprain and will get an MRI at some point Saturday to see just how bad it is.

High ankle sprains can be notoriously difficult to recover from, and if it’s extremely bad, Darnold could be out for an extended period of time.

ESPN puts the timeline for recovery between four and six weeks if it’s a standard high ankle sprain.

The good news for the Panthers is missing Darnold for more than a month doesn’t really impact the team’s plans moving forward.

He was relegated to the QB2 role after losing the starting job to Baker Mayfield. So, the franchise can keep chugging along without any issues as Sam Darnold heals up.

Hopefully, he’s back as quickly as possible and it’s not a very serious high ankle sprain. You never want to see anyone get hurt, especially with the kind of injury that just nags and nags.

Cam Newton Return ‘Too Early’ to Consider After Sam Darnold Injury, Says Panthers HC

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule isn't yet ready to pursue a reunion with Cam Newton despite the team's quarterback depth already getting put to the test.

Rhule didn't rule out the idea, though.

"[General manager Scott Fitterer] and I will talk about that," he told reporters Friday. "Obviously, Cam would have to weigh in on that. There’d be a lot of things that we’d have to look at. You guys know my feelings on Cam. My time with him was fantastic. But probably too early right now to say much about that."

The Panthers placed rookie QB Matt Corral on injured reserve after he suffered a Lisfranc injury that will rule him out for his rookie year. Then NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Sam Darnold may have suffered a high-ankle sprain.

As a result, Carolina may need to add another quarterback ahead of the regular season.

While he didn't close the door on Newton, one couldn't blame Rhule for being a bit lukewarm on the idea of signing him again.

The three-time Pro Bowler initially had a homecoming straight from a storybook in 2021 as he scored touchdowns with his first two touches in a win over the Arizona Cardinals. Over time, the bloom came off the rose, though.

In eight appearances with the team, Newton threw for 684 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ran for 230 yards and five touchdowns on 47 carries.

Unlike last year, though, the Panthers wouldn't be adding the 33-year-old with an eye toward starting him for any stretch of games. Rhule confirmed what many expected when he named Baker Mayfield the starter for Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns.

Newton would arguably be an upgrade over P.J. Walker. Through two years in Carolina, Walker has thrown for 730 yards, two touchdowns and eight interceptions.

As a backup who can be utilized in a situational role, Newton would make sense as a short-term solution to the Panthers' injury problems at quarterback.

Sam Darnold Carted Off Field After Suffering Gruesome Injury

Quarterback Sam Darnold of the Carolina Panthers suffered a devastating lower leg injury in a pre-season game against the Buffalo Bills on Friday.

Sam Darnold was taken off the field on a cart after suffering a nasty-looking injury on this play.

Darnold is seen being tackled to the ground by a Bills defender, where he appears to get his left leg twisted underneath him. He was carted off of the field after the play.

This injury comes at a bad time for Carolina. Last week, in the Panthers’ preseason matchup against the New England Patriots, backup quarterback Matt Corral suffered a season-ending Lisfranc tear in his left foot, according to ESPN.

Because of the way Carolina’s roster is currently constructed, P.J. Walker, is the only other healthy quarterback on the team to backup Baker Mayfield. Darnold’s injury places the Panthers in a difficult situation the position heading into the NFL regular season.

Darnold was vying for the starting quarterback position all throughout training camp before head coach Matt Rhule declared Mayfield as the team’s starter last Monday. Simply put, this was a bad week for Darnold — hopefully, he can come back strong.

12:35 Game Recap: Cowboys Come Back for 27-26 Win

This may have been the final game of the preseason, but with players fighting for their NFL lives, fans were treated to an entertaining matchup that saw the Dallas Cowboys secure a late 27-26 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Because the Cowboys played largely backups throughout the night while nine of the Seahawks' 11 offensive starters were on the field early on, it was perhaps no surprise that Dallas fell behind early. But the team battled back, tying the score late in the third quarter and then coming from behind again in the fourth to earn the win.

Defensively, Dallas brought back memories of last season when they led the NFL with 34 takeaways. The group earned five in this game – four interceptions and one fumble recovery. The Cowboys gave up 328 yards, but held Seattle to just a 15 percent success rate on third downs, the Seahawks also good on only one of five trips into the red zone.

On the other side of the ball, Will Grier spent most of the game behind center for the Cowboys, but may not have done enough to overtake Cooper Rush for the backup quarterback job. In an up and down effort, he threw for just 88 yards, although that included two touchdown tosses for a passer rating of 94.5. Rush completed only two of five attempts for 40 yards, but was in for only one series of play before getting the rest of the night off.

Again, the Cowboys offense did well on the ground, rushing for 128 yards total. Rookie Aaron Shampklin led the way with 54 yards on 13 carries before leaving the game late due to injury. In his bid to make the roster, Malik Davis continued his strong play with 44 yards on 15 attempts.

In all, the Cowboys put up 286 yards of offense, but unlike their counterparts, were successful in three of five trips into the red zone while also converting 38 percent of their third down tries.

First Quarter

The battle for the backup quarterback spot saw Rush take the first series with the offense before Grier then handled the duties into the second half. Neither was able to get much done in the first quarter, though, as the offense gained a combined total of 21 yards on their first four possessions.

Meanwhile, Seattle was still trying to determine who would be its starting quarterback, meaning the defense faced several of the Seahawks starters. But the unit limited Geno Smith's effort to just a 53-yard field goal on the visitor's first series before Drew Lock was picked off by Israel Mukuamu on their next possession, the second interception for the safety this preseason.

But after the Cowboys failed to convert a fourth-and-4 at the Seattle 44-yard line, the Seahawks needed only two plays to reach the end zone. The score came thanks to a 35-yard Lock completion to Penny Hart, despite some close coverage from rookie cornerback Daron Bland, giving Seattle a 10-0 lead.

Second Quarter

The Cowboys finally got on the move on their first series of the second quarter, the team running the ball six times for 32 yards to get down to the Seattle 6-yard line. Dallas had to settle for a 28-yard field field goal courtesy of Brett Maher, but the home side was on the board.

Although the Seahawks responded with a field goal of their own, a 29-yarder, the Cowboys got their second interception of the night on Seattle's next series. Nahshon Wright stepped in front of a Lock offering and returned the pick 22-yards to the Seahawks' 32.

Taking over with just a little more than two minutes left in the half, the Cowboys saw Grier scramble for 16 yards and then Davis rushed for 13 more to set Dallas up with first-and-goal at the 1-yard line with 1:24 remaining. Two snaps later, Grier fired a dart to wideout Simi Fehoko in the back of the end zone to narrow the score to 13-10 at the break.

Third Quarter

That lead would soon enough be back up to a 10-point advantage for Seattle, who started the second half with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in another touchdown. Dallas had a chance to stall the drive when a Lock pass fell incomplete on third-and-7 at the Cowboys' 45-hard line. But a roughing the passer penalty on Sam Williams kept the Seahawks' drive alive and eventually resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by DeeJay Dallas.

The Cowboys rallied, though. Grier came right back and led the offense on a 10-play, 58-yard drive that set Maher up for a 35-yard field goal that was good. And then on Seattle's next series, undrafted rookie safety Markquese Bell came down with a tipped ball and returned it 29-yards to the Seahawks' 13-yard line.

Two plays later, receiver Brandon Smith made a beautiful catch in the end zone, a tiptoe grab along the left sideline. And with that, suddenly the game was tied 20-20 heading into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Both teams had field goal opportunities through the first nine minutes of the fourth frame. Unfortunately, the Seahawks were good on theirs while Dallas was not. Of course, Seattle's tries were a pair of 28 yard boots while in between, Maher came out for a lengthy 61-yard attempt that appeared to have the distance, but sailed just wide left.

The Cowboys weren't done, though, and in particular tight end Peyton Hendershot. The rookie caught a 15-yard pass early in the drive and took a big hit that knocked off his helmet and brought an unnecessary roughness penalty and another 15 yards. But he shook that off and bounced back to haul in another Ben DiNucci pass and sprint 14 yards before diving across the goal line. Thanks to Hendershot's effort, Dallas had a 27-26 lead.

Over the final four minutes, the Cowboys defense would be tested, but held its ground. That included a botched snap by the Seahawks that resulted in the ball bouncing directly into the arms of rookie linebacker Storey Jackson, and then in Seattle's final possession of the night safety, Juanyeh Thomas cradled a tipped pass for the team's fourth interception.

Which sealed the win for the Cowboys, the team finishing up the 2022 exhibition schedule with a 2-1 record, their first winning preseason since 2017.
