It’s not uncommon for Google to have a Google Doodle in place of its regular blue, red, yellow and green lettering to represent a significant day in history on its homepage — but what does the March 15 image of two smiling children sniffing wafts of hot, well-seasoned chicken thighs have to do with the date?

Google is celebrating “Filipino Adobo” chicken in its Google Doodle because, after the word “adobo” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in December 2006, it was also added to word list on the OED’s quarterly update on this day in 2007, the company said.

Filipino adobo chicken is a popular dish that originated from the Philippines and is “sometimes considered to be the unofficial national dish of the country,” according to some outlets. There are many variations and recipes on how to make adobo in multiple cultures, and Filipino adobo recipes also vary according to different parts of the Philippines, Google’s site explained.

Generally, adobo-style cooking requires the following: meat, seafood or vegetables braised into a stew, usually with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves and black pepper, and laid over a bed of rice. But for Filipino adobo, places like Visayas and Southern Luzon have their own regional styles — which depends on the available ingredients in the area.

Visayas locals make “adobong puti,” which “uses exclusively vinegar and no soy sauce,” and is considered by some “to be the original indigenous style of Filipino adobo.” For Southern Luzon, “creamier adobo with coconut milk is more popular,” Google’s site read.

The March 15 Google Doodle artist, Anthony Irwin, has a special compassion for cultural ties when it comes to food.

Irwin said, “For children of immigrants, our relationship with our parents’ food is a complex one. On one hand, my mother’s cooking made me feel like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. It felt special and safe and warm. But on the other hand, most kids just want to fit in. Growing up in the U.S., I didn’t want my food to be special. I didn’t want to feel different. I just wanted to be like everyone else.

As an adult, Irwin said he looks for ways to feel proud of his culture and heritage — pride he didn’t feel as a child. Filipino food creates that connection between his mother’s identity and his own.

“So I tried to capture that simple childhood joy of leaning in and savouring the kind of food that makes home feel like home. Kain nang mabuti!,” Irwin said.

Google Doodle is celebrating the "tender, juicy and soulful" adobo, a popular Filipino dish and the first food from the country to be featured on the platform.

Wednesday's Doodle marks the 16th anniversary of adobo's inclusion in the Oxford English Dictionary’s quarterly word list update.

While there are many kinds of adobo in the Philippines, they all share the basic elements of marinated meat or vegetables braised into a stew. Common ingredients for adobo are vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves and black pepper. Regional variations make their adobo sweet, sour or salty.

Locals in Visayas are known for the "adobong puti" (white adobo), considered by some to be the original indigenous style, which uses vinegar instead of soy sauce. In the northern part of the country, where coconut milk is a food staple, creamier adobo recipes like "adobong manok sa gata" (chicken adobo with coconut milk) are extremely popular. In other regions, some substitute meat with seafood like squid, or locally available vegetables like "kangkong" (water spinach) or "sitaw" (string beans).

The dish has evolved over the centuries and has spread worldwide. In a blog post, Google Doodle called adobo "a symbol and expression of Filipino pride that varies from region to region, family to family, palate to palate."

The animated Doodle was illustrated by Anthony Irwin, the child of Filipino immigrants in the U.S. Irwin recalled his childhood inner struggles of the comfort he felt eating his ethnic food while also yearning to fit in.

"For children of immigrants, our relationship with our parents' food is a complex one. On one hand, my mother's cooking made me feel like I was exactly where I was supposed to be," Irwin said. "It felt special and safe and warm. But on the other hand, most kids just want to fit in. Growing up in the U.S., I didn't want my food to be special. I didn't want to feel different. I just wanted to be like everyone else."

He continued, "Now as an adult, I get to find all of these opportunities to be proud in ways childhood didn't let me feel proud. I can claim Filipino food as a part of my culture and celebrate the connection it creates between my mother's identity and my own."

A South Carolina jury has found once-prominent attorney Alex Murdaugh guilty on all counts in the deaths of his wife and son.

Jurors deliberated for about three hours before convicting him on two counts of murder and two counts of using a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Murdaugh showed little emotion as the verdicts were read.

The Mavericks should have never let Sunday’s match with the Los Angeles Lakers come down to the final possessions.

But when their 27-point lead evaporated, it did. And the Lakers knew exactly what crucial challenge the Mavericks were facing.

New team with new key players. Tense situation.

The Lakers know the drill. And they also know it’s easier said than done when it comes to clutch-time execution in that situation.

“I was just trying to speed him up and make the catch tough,” said Lakers’ newcomer Jarred Vanderbilt. “Those guys are still trying to figure out what they’re doing at the end of games, too.

“They’re a new team, or a new backcourt, as well. We were just trying to speed them up, cause a little chaos and indecision. And I think we were able to do that.”

The Mavericks were trailing 108-105 with 18 seconds remaining. After having a 27-point lead in the second quarter, it was a difficult spot to be in.

James and the Los Angeles Lakers rallied from a 27-point hole to beat the Mavericks 111-108 at the American Airlines Center on Sunday, which matched the largest comeback win James has had in his career. It also marked the largest comeback win anywhere in the league this season, and the largest Lakers comeback win since 2002 — when they rallied from 30 points to beat the Mavericks.

NBA teams were 138-0 this season when leading by 27 or more points before Sunday.

The Mavericks, after holding the Lakers to just 16 points in the first period, built a massive 48-21 lead near the midway point of the second quarter. The Lakers had missed their first 15 shots from behind the arc by that point, and seemed well out of it.

The Lakers, however, slowly chipped away and shut down both Mavericks stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in the second half. Doncic scored 14 of his 26 points on the night in the first quarter, and Irving scored just four of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Anthony Davis led the Lakers with 30 points and 15 rebounds, and threw down a huge put-back dunk in the final minutes that propelled the Lakers to the three-point win.

James added 26 points and eight rebounds while shooting 10-of-23 from the field. Jarred Vanderbilt finished 15 points and 17 rebounds. The win marked the third-straight for the Lakers, and the fourth in their last five games.

Doncic added nine rebounds and five assists, and Irving finished with 11 rebounds and five assists. They were the only two Mavericks starters to score double figures. Dallas has now lost four of its last five games, and has only won once with both Irving and Doncic on the floor since their trade.

“I’m not the savior here. I’m not playing,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said, via ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “I’m watching, just like you guys. As a team, we’ve got to mature … We’ve got to grow up.”

LeBron James limps out of arena with foot injury
The Lakers got the win, but it may have come at a price.

James injured his right foot in the third quarter quarter, and was seen holding his ankle on the court and saying, "I heard a pop." He insisted after that he never thought about sitting the rest of the way. He didn't get into too much detail after, other than saying he "has been better."

James was spotted limping out of the arena, too.

“He’s good,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said, via the OC Register’s Kyle Goon. “Our medical people are looking at him right now, and we’ll get a reevaluation in the morning.”

The Lakers have two games left in their three-game road trip. They'll take on the Memphis Grizzlies next on Tuesday before wrapping up with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.

Sunday, James said he was about to embark on 23 of the most-important regular season games of his career – a stretch that would determine whether the Lakers would make the playoffs or be out of it for the second year in a row.

Full-speed from here on out – and if this was the first step, it was a good start.

With James struggling and the Warriors’ defense locked in on Anthony Davis, the Lakers’ depth and defense was more than enough, the Lakers’ cruising to a 124-111 win out of the break.

“Overall, a great team win,” Darvin Ham said.

The Lakers led by as many as 28 – just the ninth time they’ve led by 20 in a game this season. More importantly, it’s the second game in row the Lakers have led by 20 – another dominant performance against a playoff contender after the team blew out New Orleans last week.

The Warriors were without Steph Curry and Andrew Wiggins.

The Lakers’ push comes while the team’s urgency is a stated high – a pack of playoff contenders all trying to surge with the Lakers at the rear.

Everyone in the West, save for Denver, Memphis at the top and Houston and San Antonio at the bottom, has no firm of idea of what the postseason future looks like. As of Thursday, six games separated the third-place Kings from the 13th-place Lakers.

“I think it’s a sprint to the finish line,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said pregame. “I know given LeBron’s career and everything he’s achieved that it might sound like hyperbole, but we all feel a sense of urgency at this point. We’re just a couple games ahead of them. We’re all in this precarious position where we could be in the play-in, we could sneak into the six (seed), we could fall out entirely.”

From Ben Bolch: The possibility made the rounds, players on the verge of something UCLA had not done in a decade talking about another Pac-12 regular-season championship.

“I mean, that’s the reason we came here,” junior guard Jaylen Clark said earlier this week. “I know it ain’t been done since 2013.”

Clark and senior forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. tried to recall who was on that team. The stars were Shabazz Muhammad, Larry Drew II and Kyle Anderson, the Bruins edging Oregon by one game in the conference standings. Everything was a downer from there, Jordan Adams breaking his foot in the Pac-12 tournament and coach Ben Howland getting fired after the Bruins lost by 20 points to Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Another Pac-12 championship was UCLA’s for the taking this week. The Bruins could clinch at least a share of the title with a sweep of Utah and Colorado or one victory plus an Arizona loss against Arizona State.

It wasn’t going to be easy. After losing most of a 16-point lead in the second half against Utah, the Bruins turned to the player who continued to emerge as their late-season savior.

Jaquez buried a fadeaway three-pointer with 63 seconds left, sending fans streaming toward the exits inside the Huntsman Center with the fourth-ranked Bruins on their way to a 78-71 victory.

Jaquez finished with 23 points while making 10 of 15 shots for the Bruins (24-4 overall, 15-2 Pac-12), who stretched their lead over the Wildcats to two games after Utah had closed within four points with 2½ minutes left.

Bella Murekatete had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Tara Wallack made a key three-pointer with 24.7 seconds left and Washington State beat No. 17 UCLA 62-55 on Thursday night for its first-ever win at Pauley Pavilion.

Washington State was 0-34 against the Bruins in Los Angeles — with just 10 wins in 80 overall games. The Cougars (19-9, 9-8 Pac-12) need to win at USC on Saturday to post back-to-back winning seasons in Pac-12 play for the first time in program history.

UCLA scored 10 consecutive points during a 14-4 run to close the first half for a tie at 25-all.

Charisma Osborne led UCLA (21-8, 10-7) with 14 points and eight rebounds. Kiki Rice added 10 points.

USC BASKETBALL
Boogie Ellis scored 21 points and USC breezed to an 84-65 victory over Colorado on Thursday night.

Ellis made 7 of 16 shots with two 3-pointers for the Trojans (20-8, 12-5 Pac-12 Conference), who have won three straight. Kobe Johnson had 15 points and seven rebounds, while Reese Dixon-Waters added 15 points and five boards off the bench. Drew Peterson pitched in with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists. Tre White had 10 points and six rebounds.

KJ Simpson paced the Buffaloes (15-14, 7-11) with 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Luke O’Brien added 12 points and five boards.

Kadi Sissoko had 19 points, Destiny Littleton had 10 and Rayah Marshall grabbed 10 rebounds as the Trojans defeated 47-43. The Trojans held Washington to just two points in the first quarter on the way to a 17-11 halftime lead. The two teams combined to miss 75 shots in the low-scoring contest.

“I don’t want to draw conclusions based on appearance,” Urías said in Spanish, “but if you look at him or his last name, you don’t assume he’s Mexican.”

Benji Gil was surprised, too, when Mike Gallego informed him last summer.

“I said, ‘You know Barnes is Mexican, right?’ ” Gallego remembered. “He said, ‘Barnes? I never heard of a Mexican named Barnes.’ I told him he’s my nephew, and he goes, ‘You’re kidding.’ ”

Gallego and Gil work in the Angels’ organization together. Gallego knew Gil was in line to serve as Mexico’s manager in the World Baseball Classic in March, and that Gil was part of the contingent responsible for assembling the roster for the tournament. He thought his nephew, a veteran catcher for one of Major League Baseball’s perennial powers, would be a good fit.

Coupled with Urías’ endorsement, Barnes, to the surprise of most baseball followers, was named to Mexico’s roster earlier this month.

From Bill Shaikin: The renovation of the oldest stadium in the Cactus League was delayed by the potential sale of the Angels, with a new major league clubhouse now expected to open in 2025 and a stadium expansion scheduled for completion in 2026.

In 2021, the Angels and the city of Tempe agreed on a $51-million renovation project at Tempe Diablo Stadium, with the new clubhouse as the top priority.

The city last year planned for a January 2023 groundbreaking, stadium director Jerry Hall said, but the Angels subsequently asked for a hold on construction, allowing any new owner the opportunity to make changes to the project.

With the benefit of 21st-century hindsight, we know the Internet will not end up being a 100% good idea even if the main character Major Sergei Nechaev, an agent who serves Sechenov, fully believes in the dream of a world where everyone equally has access to each other and the wealth of information that will surely be shared. Assigned to investigate a disturbance in Facility 3826, the Soviet Union's foremost scientific research hub, Sergei is joined by Charles, a sentient glove that gifts the agent with a host of polymer-fed technopowers like telekinesis and cryokinesis, and provides a sounding board for Sergei's oftentimes annoying and borderline abusive collection of quips and unfunny comebacks.

Within the now blood-soaked hallways and flickering lights of the partially destroyed underground facility, Sergei discovers experiments into mutation gone awry and finds that the once-peaceful robot assistants have turned blood-thirsty. The true horror doesn't come until later, however, when Charles talks to Sergei about the ways in which Kollectiv 2.0 (which is already installed into Sergei) may not be entirely beneficial. Hasn't Sergei noticed that all those audio logs he's found and computers he's logged into only give him information that's relevant to furthering the mission he's been assigned? Wow, it's almost as if an algorithm is feeding him with information about what it thinks he should see and hear more of, disguising it in a way where he can't spot the manipulation. It's not as overt a form of control as a spoken command but Charles hints that humans can be directed just as easily as robots once they've all logged into the same hive-mind of information, especially if there is a way to control that information.

Сергей также глубоко неприятен как человек. Он настроен враждебно ко всем вокруг, включая регулярно помогающего Чарльза, и никогда не объясняется, почему, что приводит к медленному осознанию болезненной правды о том, что вы просто играете за дерьмового человека.
